Civilian clothing should not be allowed in combat

This might come as a surprise to you, but even very talented artists and musicians create stuff that are not that great.

    @Daemons_Bane

You are aware that your freedom is not limited by me but by the devs at a multinational corporation who decide what you can buy or not? There will always be leaders who set a standard. Those standards should be good, not pathetic.

I don't mind the jester costume if it had looked cool, but it's just silly.

As already written, MP was funny and creative 30-40 years ago. In the 80s, when I was a punk, I wore an orange female gown at high school, and a cowboy hat. That was "provocative" back then, in my country. Crossdressing today is just boring.

    @laksikus

If people say that the Ronald McDonald's costume is as beautiful as a dress created by Christian Lacroix, yes, then it's "no opinions allowed".

ESO is the first game that is more than just a game. It actually got class. And it has potential to be art. But not if the devs like to be lame comedians instead.

If the devs create a Donald Duck costume, people will wear it, because it's "so hilarious", and then they will predictably try to refute criticism by arguying that those who say they don't like it are "paternalistic", "too serious" and probably "fascists" too.

The point is that looking like a fool in 2017 is not provocative. I basically don't care if people in my group want to look silly, because I will just focus on the battle instead. But it makes me more indifferent about the game, in the same way I'm not interested in reading a boring novel or celebrity gossip magazine.

@ChaosWotan @Jitterbug Gaudy patterned clothing to attract attention, seems the same to me. Only difference is, a clown wants to attract attention because it's their profession to make a show of themselves. The people that wear these clown dresses have no such excuse for their appearance. ;)

Wait what? The first TES game you mean? That'd be slightly less embarrassing than if you meant first game period. Wrong either way but still.

There are plenty of games-as-high-art. I'm gonna argue that they're mostly single player. Ico jumps to mind.

ESO is an mmo first and foremost. It seems it's a lot of people's first mmo, which is fine, but means they lack context. An mmo's first priority is interaction. Part of that is providing avenues for expression. It's a social thing. People want to differentiate themselves, as in real life. A convenient way to do this is to embrace garishness.

Honestly, with all that said, ESO has done a remarkable job of catering to lore and immersion nerds imo. The quest content is head and shoulders above anything I've seen in an mmo.

The obvious comparison is WoW which generally has pretty abysmal writing. They live and die entirely on gameplay. They also set the bar for what is expected in an mmo and established the standard for cosmetics years ago. Costumes, transmogrification, etc. I hate to make this argument but: it's here to stay. Like, it just is. You're gonna have to make peace with it.

I won't even argue whether or not there can sometimes be such a thing as objective taste. It's beside the point. The point is that in an mmo you're going to be surrounded by people over whom you have no control. Hey, just like in real life! That's weeiird isn't it? It's half the fun.

tldr; live and let live. easy peasy

ESO is starting to look like a bad taste party. Male orcs in white wedding dresses, men in pink shorts, and now many players running around with a silly crown that looks like a cheap toy found within a box of cereals. And let's not forget the chef, jester and dinner party costumes. It is not realistic that clothes like that are used in combat. It's like BF1 should let soldiers dress in a bikini during combat.

Now it's obvious that ESO is catering to those who think that a game should be "ironic", a bit "hilarious" and "LOL", but if ESO wants to go down that path, please create gear that is actually funny, with the same quality as Monty Python, instead of turning combat into a clown act.

Yeah because it's crazy realistic that You can turn into werewolf , blast enemie with flames , lightning or ice from Your hands or stick or even sometimes hold more when wearing clothes then a guy wearing fully metal plates on him... It's fantasy game and comparing it to game like battlefield have no sense.

The realism card is the choice of desperation.. Realism is not an issue in a game containing magic.. You run into battle as a Jester/orc in a dress/clad in gold and so forth? I guess uncle Sheo says hello.. You run into battle as a chef, or a blacksmith? maybe a caravan got assaulted and now you defend yourself.. There's an easy explanation to everything.. Personally I like to go into PvP as a goblin, since I like it.. Let's just pretend that some angry mage cursed me, and then we can all be happy

The point is that if ESO continues to create LOL-gear every quarter, then more and more (juvenile) gamers will use this gear, perhaps because they think it's "provocative" and not boring, until it becomes a regular part of all combat.

Monty Python was actually creative and funny back in the days, 30-40 years ago. Copying them today is just zzzz. Create something new.

But if ESO wants the game to be a joke, then so be it.

Lol if it is not funny now then it must not of been to funny then. There was just a lack of things that were actually funny.

The thing about MMOs is you play with other people. Each person can create and dress their toon however they please. If how others choose to create and dress their toons bothers you to much I suggest sticking with single players.

Btw imo, referencing Monty python as something for eso to copy makes me happy you are not the one in charge.

In the end, you play your game and I will play mine.

Arguing about the realism of werewolves or whatever isn't super helpful. Honestly, he's kind of right. The game, and most of TES lore, is pretty internally consistent. You could totally argue that wearing a pink dress is a slight deviation from that.

It just doesn't matter. This isn't a single player game, it's an mmo. That means certain things are out the window. Full stop.

This is a fantasy game, not suppose be realistic. I wear a suit on my Templar Healer. Suit is all cloth and my gear is 7 light. Is that realistic enough for you? It's better than wearing a silly robe. I don't see anything wrong with wear clothing during comBat.

Not everyone subscribes to your antiquated and narrow concept of gender norms. Nor do we have to.

Ffs. Get a life. It's a game. It's meant to be something done for fun, for amusement, for enjoyment. Stop being so serious!

My nb does pvp in costume. It does not affect his abilities at all. And some of the best players I've seen 'ponce about' in costume.....

Personally I would love it if all the "civilian clothing" costumes automatically unequipped when entering combat.

    ...

Or maybe if the costumes reduced your characters armor value while worn... so that if you do decide to go for the dancers sliks while fighting, your character gets no armor value at all, and if they wore the thieves leather, they would get up to maximum medium armor protection values, but not heavy...

Then everyone could wear what they wanted, but would have to pay the price as well in effect.

    ...

Of course, I also would want all those disguises to be removed from our characters inventory and turned into costumes on completion of their associated quest...
