I get people want to use a costume because their sets don't look good together. I also get that people want to hide what sets they are using.

And some people like to run around a war zone in a bath towel! Seems stupid to me but to each there own!

A game should be realistic within it's realm and context. Using civilian clothing in combat is not realistic within the realm of fantasy. But I guess people who support these bad taste costumes would also have laughed their ass off if the main characters in the Lord of the Rings movies had run around in pink shorts and wedding dresses.

It's a saying that even the gods are helpless when encountering stupidity, and the same applies to bad taste.

The vast majority of ancient armies were farmers and peasants. They couldnt afford armor let alone weapons. They would march into battle with nothing more than the clothing their wives made them and the pitchforks they used regularly on their farms and daily lives.

The idea that every warrior that would step on the battlefield would be well geared and well armed is silly and far from realistic.

LotR: Two Towers had an entire portion of the movie with peasants and farmers manning the barricades to defend against Orcs. Its not out of the realm of fantasy by a long shot. Also its a video game. And while there are limitations in choice. This is not one of them.

I agree with Op somewhat. I know the fear.

I was playing an mmo, I think Tera, and pretty much the week they introduced Police officer costumes and Police officer cars as mounts was when I left.

Op might feel like gimmicky crowns and pink bath towels are a slippery slope toward Earth pop culture infiltrating Tamriel.

    I get it.

However we aren't there yet. So far we haven't seen anything that hasn't already been in Elder Scrolls (that I can think of atm). In the interest of catching the most fish, they aren't likely to put gender restrictions on things (don't get me started on race restricted items in the crates).

So OP, I think the devs are trying their best to allow for fun but not let it go to school girl outfits and butterfly wings. So far. Now is not the time to panic that they are making a mockery of this much loved IP, save it for when they really get out of hand.

Edit: furthermore I think OP has the right to criticize the quality of the 3D model. Maybe it does look like a shiny plastic molded crown and they could change some textures and specular maps to make it look more like wood and painted iron.

The fashion in this game is disgusting and very bad, imo, is the worst one out of all the MMO's I've played, there's no transmog and all the costumes are plain simple so when any glowing costume is released people try to make a shiny character but it doesn't work because the dyes are disgusting also.

Zenimax can you please call Arena Net the creators of Guild Wars and ask them advice about fashion in a game? Because those guys won the Fashion war between MMOs.

Guess I have time to respond to the above.

One said that irony was older than the 90s. Of course it is. Kierkegaard for instance. But Generation X is known as the ironic generation, and it became more or less the new mainstream in the 90s.

Others have said that peasants used civilian clothing, but my point is that people don't fight in their finest dresses and costumes. A ball room dress doesn't belong on the battlefield. Anyone disagreeing with that is just a troll.

In my OP I wrote that ESO is starting to look like a bad tast party. And then I said several times in other posts that ESO will become cheesy if the devs continue to create more silly costumes. I don't want the game to look like a cheap Korean mmo in the future, and that's why I started this thread. But it seems like many of you don't get that, or that you have just replied after seeing the first OP without reading the rest of the thread.

In other threads I have criticised the Homestead houses because they are dull and boring, especially compared to how much they cost. Similarly, I now criticize other designs I think the devs could have done much better. That's all. No need to get angry about it.

Admittedly, some of the heat in this thread is a result of me writing that the players who use these "funny" costumes (on a regular basis) got bad taste and boring humor. But they actually got bad taste. I'm just pointing out that which is obvious from the viewpoint of aristocrats who like the fine arts.

Critics say that ESO is just a game. Duh. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Football is also just a game, but if Liverpool and Manchester started playing in bikinis, ball room dresses and jester costumes that would be ... well, that would be funny actually. But only the first or second time it happens. After that it would become boring. Many would still like it, and begin to watch football more often, but it would be absurd if they started to smack talk traditional football fans who said that their great game had become a bad taste party.

ESO is a game, but it's also a hobby for those of us who have paid 3000 dollars for a high-end gaming rig. I used three thousand dollars to upgrade my computer, mainly because I wanted to play ESO on max settings without any lag. And after this investment it's natural to take an interest in how the content and design of the game should be developed in the future.

Yes, it has occurred to me that ESO is not a single player and that an mmo consists of thousands of gamers with diffferent taste and hardwear. It's good that they express their opinions, by any means, even smack talk, in the same way I defend my interests, in this forum.

The only thing I'm trying to tell the devs, if they care to listen to us gamers, is this: whatever you design, be it crossdressing or not, please make it cool and elegant, not cheesy. Create art.

Irony is boring now, though it was new and fun in the 90s. But if one should include humour, then it should be good, like Monty Python, not lame.

If ESO continues this trend, the game will look more and more clownish. Just saying.

While I find Monty Python hilarious, not everyone does. British humor is rather dry. So others would say that is lame as well. I really don't see how this affects your gameplay. Really why have horses let's just have a guy run around with 2 coconut halves making noise and turn Rakkat into a killer beast (bunny).

My main character wears the wedding suit at all time, and almost never wears armor. That's his character: he is GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER.

SO SORRY if this spoils your little fantasy.

The topic is "Civilian Clothing Should Not Be Allowed in Combat," so that goes far beyond "silly costumes," which a lot of folk happen to like.

hate to break it to you but a lot of games do it, and people love it. I know ESO is not one, but I'm going to say it anyways- (for example) Korean MMOs sustain costumes and cosmetics up the ass and there's people who find it utterly amazing that they can be a top dog pvper in a pink maids outfit. It's just something that people enjoy doing whether it's for their own purpose of fashion or it's to simply say you got beat by a guy in pink shorts.

I don't think anything needs to be changed about this because posts like this do make it hilarious because you make it seem like a ranting thread over being farmed by an orc in a white wedding dress.

Great many things that were the height of fashion at their time and place would be considered bad taste or carnival here and now.

Just love it when someone using his narrow cultural perspective of "proper" wants to regulate Tamrielic fashion.

If magic had worked on Earth there would have been brightly glowing neon clothing at Agincourt. And come the next decade they perhaps would have been out of fashion.

Mostly its an major difference between Asian and Western MMO in that fit in the game setting.
You don't get that sort of thing in most western mmo.
WOW has it easier because of the fantasy + steampunk setting and being pretty cartoony.

Else I agree with you on the crown, it looks too plastic. More badly painted wood would look cooler.

    They do.

Yes, there's the fun chef's hat and the wedding dress that I've seen more often in a dungeon than at a shrine of mara. But there is also the myriad of so-called 'tasteful' costumes, like the banquet garb or the gala dress. There's some there for you - for your character. But there's also the jester's costume, for another person and -their- character.

Your post rubbed a lot of people the wrong way because instead of saying 'I don't like this' it came off as a 'I don't like this, therefor no one else should be able to do this'. No, it's not necessarily realistic. But the female plate armor isn't realistic either.
