I did not know this, well, maybe more servers is not the answer, What would help stability and functioning of the game then?
No. I think ESO is still hosted on dedicated hardware, owned or leased by ZOS, located in Germany and Texas. It is not a cloud game. I am not sure what @Nestor is referring to.
@lordrichter
Cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet, anything done in the internet is done in the cloud. I can't find the ZOS news article that talks about this (or maybe it was a Dev Post), but AWS has server farms all over the world, including Texas. They offer scalable server platforms to many companies. This is why ZOS was able to increase the capacity so quickly when they launched. If this was dedicated server space, more on that in a moment, was because of AWS. You need more blades, you make a phone call, or send an email. If this was dedicated space in a data center, your looking at weeks, probably months to increase server space with ordering times, racking, powering and cooling concerns, etc. I have been designing networks into data centers, colo's and the like for the past 3 years, time frames on these projects are maddening to say the least.
Just because AWS hosts something does not mean its a "cloud service" in the lay sense. It also does not mean that AWS controls the servers, they are dedicated to ESO just like a house you rent is dedicated to you.
Just run a Tracert to the ESO servers, you will see that AWS is the last hop. In Dallas/Fort Worth

true, but tracert is unreliable and terrible for finding server information. Like really terrible. It's lijely goung to get dropped by a firewall on the spot. Try a whois for registrar infrmation instead.

This would also add significantly to the cost of running the game. All other things being equal, something else would not get as much money so that this could be done. I will accept down time, especially for things like patches, if they can put less money into duplication of server infrastructure and more into game development.
Don't want this. I enjoy having more players in the server.
From what I hear the lag isn't due to the number of people anyway, so why bother.
DurzoBlint13 wrote: »I still want to know WHY OP feels we need more servers? ....also, no we do not, that is what they have instances for.
@DurzoBlint13 my guess is the following.
OP is in PvP.
OP runs through Cyrodiil looking at the wonderful rolling green hills and blue skies. As OP is taking in the view they see a corn flower growing in the wild and stops to pick it, but as OP lets their guard down to pick the flower something terrible happens.
A Nightblade comes out of nowhere, Lotus Fan! Cloak, Concealed Weapon! OP is stunned, unable to act and gets in a panic, breaking free and hitting the buttons they know to be true OP fights back, but OH NO! OP was on the wrong bar, the wrong skills go off and instead of fighting back with vengeance OP flails around like an idiot.
Suddenly it's all over, a quick Soul Harvest and two Impales later and OP is dead, the death recap asking if the OP knew potions can be slotted and used to restore resources.
OP sits with a cold numbness flooding their whole body, why were they on the wrong bar, they swore they switched bar.
Then OP sees it, down in the bottom left of the screen. Ping: 114.
It was the server latency, once again living on the wrong side of the United States has been the cause of OP's death, and with that small bit of knowledge a red haze colours OP's vision.
IF ONLY WE HAD A SERVER FOR EACH SIDE OF THE UNITED STATES! OP screams, then it comes to OP in a flash of inspiration, the forums, if they asked on the forums then they would surely get a backing and start a movement for that <60 ping server to play on.
And so we find ourselves here, in this thread after what is a long yet enlightening tale of events.

We need higher
Quality servers. I don't care if I see twenty jackwagons around a shrine or bank or wherever, my problem is the sheer amount of lag gets annoying. It also doesn't
Help when a dozen of said jackwagons are all dueling in the same area. And no its not my net, I'm on a 60mps down hard line.

Yeah, this is not about your internet speed. If your lag comes with a significant drop in FPS, then higher quality servers, or more of them, won't help you.

I built this machine. I've built every one of my machines since windows 3.1. I dont have this issue with the other games I play or I wouldn't be blaming it on ZOS. I've had lesser quality machines at times I couldnt afford to build a good one. This isnt one of those.

I expected you to say that, but you never said whether you had a significant FPS drop.

I do not. And again... I dont have this issue with other games. I always enjoy this line of questioning. Know what I hear when I get it? I hear, "Im smarter than you and Im gonna prove it's on your end because Im a slobbering fan of this game and you made me mad by questioning the devs". That's what I hear. I hear a fanboi who cant fathom that it's company side. Because they are SO much better at this. Well they aren't. My first computer didnt have a hard drive. It didnt have an OS and you had to program the game to play it and if you didnt back it up on tape because the 5 1/2 in floppy didnt have enough space to store it, you had to do it again the next time you wanted to play. The devs are usually just out of college and have classroom experience but none in the real world.
Try again.

It is quite easy to confuse a customer into spending more than they intended or get more space/CPU time/throughput than needed due to the model. MMOs could learn a thing or two about nickel-and-diming customers from Amazon.
Quite a few misconceptions of what cloud computing is. People usually think it's an empty buzz word, just highly non-secure storage, or just someone else's computer. For guys like us, it just about sends us into hysterics.
There's a reason why over 60% of all workloads are handled in the cloud (on track for 90% in the next few years). Cloud computing is becoming a new utility such as power, water, etc. and if one understands the how and the why of this compute model, one would have the difficult position of explaining why an on-premises solution would be superior from both a CapEx standpoint and a security standpoint. (hint: it's not)
Though I understand your meaning, AWS's (and its only two real competitors) pay-as-you-go and on-demand pricing with complete and utter control of how you use your resources is not a fair comparison to micro transactions. There are no "gotchas" with a cloud solution – you are in complete control, which is a blessing and a curse.
For what it’s worth, we've migrated all but our most archaic services over to AWS and the savings on power, cooling, physical security, real estate, licensing, compliance issues, OC/high-speed providers, networking infrastructure, storage and archival costs, nets us around a 45-50% reduction in operating costs per year. Let that sink in a minute. Note that this does not include other time/cost savings which are fairly difficult to track, such as the common niggles associated with on-prem datacenters/equipment.
Keep in mind, too, that we can turn it all off in the next minute and not owe another dime from that point forward.
Even if it were a wash on ROI, the security, compliance, speed, and virtually instant scalability and elasticity of AWS (mainly) is worth the price of admission. We simply cannot do on-prem what we can do with a cloud solution.
If you feel as if you're being nickeled-and-dimed you can always go with reserve instances (on the VM front) and more up-front pricing models for other XaaS if this better fits you or your clients. Good cloud architects alleviate the issue of on-demand niggles as most end-users (and many admins) still think everything is done as an EC2/VM and over-deploy and over-provision. Besides, that's less than 1% of what AWS can do and isn't at all tapping into its resources/products. You can also diversify into Google and Azure…
In short, if you do not see a savings and greater ROI, you or your sysadmins are doing something wrong somewhere and you’re not alone. Know that this is coming from a guy with over 23 years in the business and was initially, stupidly, against anything off-prem. Now, you can't pay me enough to step into a datacenter/on-prem setup...
