Should I unsubscribe from ESO+?

Given the situation with the Morrowind Expansion, I am simply wondering if it would be more prudent of me to save my money by cancelling my subscription for the next few months. One of the main reasons I subscribed to ESO+ is because I was under the impression that I would no longer have to worry about paying for newly-released content. Now, however, since ZoS has created an arbitrary distinction between two things which are essentially the same, I'm wondering if it is really worth it. What are the benefits of ESO+ aside from access to newly-released content (which we can't necessarily count as a benefit now)?

    But what about the bag's?

That is the only thing that makes ESO+ slightly worth it in my opinion. The crafting bag is really useful, but I've managed without it before.

Also, while I'm at it, I just want to clarify that I would mainly like to generate discussion and gather opinions on the matter? I'm not necessarily asking someone to make a decision for me.

If you do the math on the value of the crowns if you were to buy them on sale, it comes out to about $6/mo. So if you use crowns regularly, the net cost of a sub is $7-9/mo for the other perks, which include:
    • Craft bag access
    • The ability to dye costumes without purchasing dye packs
    • Double the number of housing items you can place in your houses.
    • +10% XP boost
    • +10% gold drops
    • +10% inspiration (crafting) boost
    • Continued access to any DLC you haven't purchased with Crowns. Keep in mind Maelstrom Arena, Blade of Woe and Thieves Troves are all gated content, not to mention any gated crafting stations (Morkuldin, Clever Alchemist, Armor Master, etc.)

If you don't use crowns, well, it's a bit more expensive of a proposition just for a few extra perks.

If I didn't intend to attempt furniture crafting with Homestead, and thus require the crafting bag to keep all the new materials introduced (with no increase to inventory options, I might add), then I would have done just that.

Yes. Drop your sub. Anytime someone questions if they should sub or not it's best they choose to not. I don't think you really need us to make the choice for you.

    I'm still a sub. I didn't question such things.
  • drwookieb14_ESO
I think it is a reasonable question to ask considering Homestead comes out next week and you don't really need ESO + for that, and then the next update is Morrowind, which you won't be given by being a subscriber.

So really the next "content" that an ESO + member will get won't be until Q3 (September maybe?). That is one major perk of the subscription taken away from the next ~7 months roughly.

    So the question is:
    1. Do you use the prior DLC content regularly?
    2. Do you use the craft bag - is it worth it?
    3. Do you use the crowns or foresee a benefit to saving them?

If no to all 3 and you really are just a subscriber to get free DLC then by all means cancel.

I think it would be a good idea to cancel subscription for the next few months, if you can live without the crafter's bag.

There won't be a DLC in the next month anyway, and when you have saved the monthly fees to pay for the expansion, you can re-sub for the next DLC...

    I might do the same.

If the basis is solely or primarily for content and your questioning it.

I think it's O K to cancel for 3-4 months to buy Morrowind. That makes sense.

Afterwards if you see reason to sub, do it

Hold on now. You think paying for a subscription right now let's me play content for free 3 months from now? You need to have a subscription now to play content now. You need to have a subscription in 3 months to play the content (new or old) 3 months from now.

People seem to believe that having a subscription for the last 2 years "banked" privilege for them. Everything you paid for with your subscription you have received. If they chose to release content now that is not covered by a subscription you can choose to not subscribe. You owe them nothing, they owe you nothing.

Like I said in another thread, only people who purchased a 6 month subscription that will overlap into the new content in June have a case to be upset, maybe. But then those people had no idea new content was coming out when they purchased the 6 month sub (and were satisfied with their purchase at that time) so maybe not.

Do you purchase other things (cosmetics, mounts, etc.) with your crown stipend?

If yes, is the Crafting Bag and gold/xp boost worth $8.50 a month for you?
If no, is the Crafting Bag and gold/xp boost worth $15 a month for you?

If you find the bag and other perks are worth that price, then stay subscribed. If not, then unsubscribe and purchase any relevant DLC yourself (using saved crowns if you have any, otherwise go nuts next time crowns go on sale and pick up a bunch of 5500 packs for $24). I arrived at $8.50 by looking at the per-crown price of the 5500 pack at its sale price, as I find it more likely that people will be wanting to wait for sales to pick up bulk amounts of crowns rather than purchasing crowns at full price or in smaller packs. 1500 crowns at that sale price comes out to around $6.50, meaning that the DLC access, crafting bag, and gold/xp boost makes up the other $8.50. The DLC access will pretty much never be worth the rental price over outright purchasing them given the announced scheme; even assuming 3 DLC per year at $30 per DLC, you're paying twice that to rent for a single year versus simply owning them outright and not losing access should you drop the sub. Given that the chances of getting 3 paid DLC per year seems low (things like Homestead or One Tamriel eat into that), and that DLC is typically less than $30, you're even worse off. As such, I'm not including it in the above question because I don't think you can really ever call it "worth it" to rent the DLC.

Renting the DLC can be worth it if you play in short bursts; you can sub for 1-2 months, play to your heart's content, then take a year off for more content to be released before putting in another 1-2 month spurt. This will be far cheaper than purchasing DLC individually, however it requires that you stop playing or at the very least stop playing DLC content for long periods of time.

Where most go wrong is assuming this is a dlc when in fact it's an expansion. All MMOs do this hell look at wow, EverQuest, guild wars. They all follow this path. As for your sub that is up to you. Personally I will remain subbed because I love this game.

If you pay up front for any online content, from any company, you are always taking a risk that the content will change or not be as expected. The longer the subscription period that you pay up front, the greater the risk. This seems to be a lesson a lot of ESO+ subscribers are just learning.

That's just how subscriptions work. They aren't content promises. You get access to all applicable content currently available for the duration of your subscription. If your subscription is several months, then if any new applicable content becomes available during that time, you will get access to it. But the words if and applicable in that sentence are doing a lot of work.

If I subscribe to Netflix and then one of their publisher contracts expires and a bunch of movies are removed from the catalog the day after I subbed, they are under no obligation to give me a refund or to have informed me ahead of time about their contract negotiations.

If I subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud and they don't come out with any new features in the time I'm subscribed, and then launch a new standalone product not included in the suite, they are under no obligation to provide that new standalone product to me or to have told me what they are spending development resources on to develop it.
