Housing will only be fun on PTS

I've been excited about housing since just before 1T, when it was clear that it was coming soon. So excited that even though I am a PS4 player, I dusted off my old PC account, downloaded the entire PTS server and logged in as soon as I got home on patch day.

And it's great! The housing editor works really well, and I enjoyed furnishing the little room I got free (and later one of the medium houses). I managed to make an extra floor and a ramp leading up to it, for my bedroom...

But... with so many of the items so difficult to obtain when the game goes live... people will be able to place like... one item a week or something. That is not going to be fun, and i think you'll find people not using housing very much, rather than going to the crown store as this seems like it is designed to do...

The cost of gold materials is going to skyrocket (so PvPers will hate this update even more), and no-one will be selling furniture on the guild stores at reasonable prices because of the costs involved in making them.

I'm... i'm not really looking forwards to it anymore tbh. I'll get the inn room because they're free and see how it goes. But I was going to buy a medium or large house from the CS... and now that seems unlikely.

How much will they cost anyways, @ZOS_GinaBruno. If a cup costs four hundred crowns, and the furnished options come with cups...

We are going to see the first crown store items over 10000c aren't we?

You really want that the only new "content" we get for the next couple of month is "ready" after a few days? Like thieves guild, soth?

Yes its is fun playing around with all items and it will be empty (when you dont buy a ready house by crowns) but for me its ok. My house will be a longterm project

I am going to do it long enough to get the target skeleton, and put in my favorite achievement trophies...

I will probably get a larger house so I can have friends over to do DPS testing, and put the whole range of crafting tools, so I can do all of my "deconning" in one place.

I was thinking about putting in attuned stations, but I am not sure which ones I would do since all of my gear comes from drops now.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the the legendary master writs, I doubt very many people will do them...

I dont think it should be available at once.

But it should have enough there to be fun when it launches. And i dont think there is enough. People should want to spend a few hours playing with their new homes - and i think a lot of people will run out of things to do.

You should be able to fill it with cheap things to start with, and then get better things as you progress.

E.g. wooden plates cheaply on day one, metal plates after a couple of weeks, ceramic plates after a month or two, and glass plates after a year when you finally get that legendary recipe drop.

It just doesnt make sense for it to be such a grind when many of the objects are literally all over tamriel already... why do i need to go find a kuta when i could realistically just go and pick up that fancy cup from emerics house when no one is looking?

A wise approach, my plan is similar, I despise being herded along with the rest of the rainbow barfing crowds and losing a lot of money and getting disappointed in a short while.

I'd rather know all recipes/patterns/plans/etc. along with an obscenely huge amount of mats before I invest either gold or crowns for a large home, housing is not the only thing in ESO that would keep me busy.

I don't think you're wrong about how it works, but I actually think that means I'll get more use from housing.

What can you do with a fully decorated house? Look at your decorations. Maybe move them around. Invite a friend to come and look at your decorations. Aside from the crafting stations and the training dummy you can't actually use any of the items (ok you can sit on a chair, which is an improvement over what we had before, but still) so a fully decorated house has very little use for anyone except role-players. (And even then there's only so much of a storyline that can take place inside your house, unless you're doing one of those murder mystery things where no one's allowed to leave until you've solved it.)

If I'm buying decorations bit by bit then immediately I've got more reason to visit because I'll have to go back every time I get a new item.

But it also means each item will be more significant to me. I tend to remember where I got things even if it's not directly related - like which quest finally gave me enough gold to afford an item. This way it can be like "I bought that chair with the gold from saving King Cassimir's life" (hey, did you hear I did that?) "I got the mats to craft this cupboard from running that new dungeon" and so on. It's another way to make the house and the stuff in it personal, vs. just a bunch of stuff which appeared when I bought the house.

Before Housing went on the PTS, this was my impression about how it would work... and I still believe this is how it should work.

I don't want to be able to make my house pretty right away. I want to have to work to make it mine... to earn it. However, when you have to spend 30 style mats to craft every single plate and cup, even those of us who have stockpiled style mats are going to run out, fast. And those who haven't stockpiled? Well, have fun farming for style mats, or searching the guild stores, or buying them from NPCs for 15g a pop. And that's not even touching on the rarer materials like tempers and kutas, which will skyrocket in price.

There is a difference between having to work for items and having to grind for them. I want to work for my furnishings. Killing wolves for two hours straight because they have a low drop rate of Clean Pelts, just to craft a bedroll? That's not fun or rewarding.

There's a balance that needs to be struck. Yes, furnishing your house with all the best stuff shouldn't be something you can do on the first day. But it shouldn't be an exhausting grind that makes it frustrating and costly to build so much as a single generic chair.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

If it were a truly decent (not even good) housing system you can spend hours and hours in it. Go ask the people in Rift how many hours they have messing with dimensions.

The speed at which you get decorations is moot its what you can do and the time it takes to get them all just right is what really should be the bulk of the time you spend with housing.

I know people will try to find any excuse they can to defend this update but as it stands housing is a complete waste of resources. Other than them getting the few whales who might still play the game to spend hundreds (if not north of a grand) of dollars to get all the houses through the crown store to get the achieves then buy up all the furniture they sell there as well. "Regular' players will get nothing, even if theyre subbed. Which sort of makes this game one that is best played for free and not worry about anything fancy.

I said it when they announced this was a 'free' update, it was going to be one that would cost more than it was worth, which is F2P 101. SO theyre putting a free to play cash grab into their buy to play, not so sub optional game. SO theyre getting everything they can out of it.

While companies obviously have to make money this one is going the simplistic route so many others have. But they see other games making money taking advantage of the player base those games have with their more money than brains players so theyre just following suit.

Using gold and purple tempers for making stupid things like gold cups is strait out ridiculous.

    11 Regulus
    7 Alchemical Resin
    8 Decorative Wax
    35 Adamantite
    3 Grain Solvent

Say goodbye to buying stacks of racial style materials cheap on guild stores. Say goodbye to cheap purple tempers.

I bet, right now, as we speak, there are disgusting people scampering from guild store to guild store buying up all the bosmer bones so that they can resell for tons of gold because everyone will want to make target skeletons.

This patch is an obvious material and gold sink but even if you never intend on buying a house, this update will raise the prices of crafting gear for everyone.

Gold materials are used for some of the Master writs. The Master writs award a token that is currency for a specialty furniture vendor who sells a few elite patterns (including the Target Skeleton), the Ebony Motif, a couple crafting items to make the patterns he sells and the Crafting Stations for your house.

They may adjust the Master Writs before live though. The cost/token seems to be off. I did see if the writ needed nirncrux and/or gold upgrade mats you got more tickets but they don't seem to correspond that well to the price of mats on Live.

Honestly, for me, the Provisioning and Enchant Master Writ were the best and easiest. Even when it used a Kuta (I have lots stored away) and it only uses one. The Master Smith Writ I did gave 150 tokens (I think enchant/prov was 2 or 3) but was a Nirnhoned, Mace, Julianos, Barbaric (or Primal maybe) and Gold. That is a really expensive Writ. I saw another similar one that said 300-something tickets. It might be up to players to decide which writs are worth doing and which you should just delete.

I have hope for the Alch one, but currently it has a lot of impossible ones so I gave up trying them. (Pre-made characters come with a whole bunch of master writs - getting them on my Master Crafter seemed a low droprate and she has all max skills, all research, all achievements and all motifs)

I'm all for housing being "long-term" (as in, not immediately gaining All The Things), but exactly how long are we talking here? Unless you're decorating with only a few large objects, we're talking about a ridiculous amount of work under the current system, to be honest. Every single fancy cup in your Altmer High-Dining experience is going to be hours of farming. How many place settings were you going for, again? Fifty? Yeah good luck. Oh also you still need to make the plates, utensils, food, decanters, etc. etc. Oh and you also need to learn the recipes for all of them. "Have fun!" Meanwhile you can make a rudimentary dueling arena or maze with just a few hundred wooden planks and rocks. While the material cost is still a bit ridiculous, that's at least somewhat more along the lines of what I was expecting from the system. Not literal years of grinding to flesh out a single idea.

That is a good idea to start with basic and make it better later on, if only we were able to sell or decon furniture that we no longer need. But nope. Once placed it's bound, so no selling cheap starter furniture to other people once you get your upgraded stuff. You can either destroy it or vendor it away for 9 gold.

Seeing as it is, I'd probably save my mats until I can do the fancy stuff and not waste anything on the inbetween pieces.

Hmm...I hadn't actually thought about buying/crafting things like cups and plates. I don't think I've placed any in any of the houses I've been experimenting with on the PTS. I've just been using big furniture like beds, chairs, dividers, and lots of rugs and torches. I know it's weird but I think place settings would be a long way down my list of priorities.

Maybe another reason I'm not worried about the cost of furniture. (Although mostly I still think it's because I think housing is pointless so I don't feel like there's any rush to get it done, and when I'm done decorating I'll probably buy another house and start over anyway.)

Fair points, @AdamBourke. Honestly, this is something we considered for quite a while, and wanted to make sure we struck a good balance of being able to have fun on day 1 while still introducing a rewarding system that would provide long-lasting enjoyment. Don't forget you will be able to find a lot of items from vendors and accolades on the first day - provided you have the appropriate amount of gold - and you can trade items with other players too!

How long term are we talking Gina? Like really, I've been playing for over 2 years (3 come April) and there's no way I have enough mats leftover from outside normal use (I don't sell my mats.. ever) to fully furnish a medium sized house to my tastes.

On another note, the complete lack of previews for gold purchased/craftable items is almost scaring me away.

If I craft an item after I learn the design... I am essentially just throwing my mats away if I don't like the item. Why? Because once I actually place it to get a good look... it's bound.. so I can't sell it. Even worse, I can't deconstruct it, so there is 0 chance of getting any of those mats back.

OP - I actually pretty much had that talk with a friend earlier. It's fun and games on PTS.. but on live you likely won't know many recipes (they definitely seem rarer than provisioning recipes to me at least) and you need to burn a ton of mats just to see what the item looks like (let's ignore the whole fan based websites for a moment).

Fair point, who needs chairs when you can buy thrones from the achievement vendors. A regular table? Not for me, thanks, I'll have the dragon shrine alter. And why would anyone want a gold cup when they can set out a touch of plague from Deshaan for their guests instead? There are also plenty of braziers for all of your lighting needs. Not sure what I'm going to use for a bed, but there must be something at the achievements vendor that will work if I rotate it the right way!

To OP or anyone who didn't see it yet, Deltia put up a list here: http://deltiasgaming.com/2017/01/07/eso-house-achievement (comments thread at https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/313511/housing-achievements-shown) now might be a good time to work on achievements to purchase these items when housing goes live.

I'm a bit in the same boat, though I'm far and away more concerned with the Regulus, Heartwood, etc. costs than the lower-tier upgrade materials. It would be one thing if they actually dropped from every node (and in appropriate quantities), but you get at most one from every node (or two with that one Champion passive), but usually you get zero. At least with the honing stone and the rest you can just get all your alts trained up enough for top-tier hireling mails and log in every day, you'll have plenty real fast. Maybe not Kutas, but everything else comes regularly enough to furnish... idk a single large home, maybe. We'll see. But then you add the 11 Mundane Runes and the fact that they hardly ever drop, or heaven forbid all the recipes that require multiple types of the new material, and it starts grossing me out. Some grind is good, but too much grind is plain frustrating, especially with One Tamriel and the fact that there are no more low-pop zones to farm in. One Tamriel is great for everything except this exact problem.

Also for what it's worth I might be able to do some posts on the achievement decorations, since I have nearly every achievement required minus a few PvP and Craglorn ones. If there's enough interest then when my new computer comes in I'll figure out how to do video capture and all that nonsense and use the giant gold piles they give you on PTS to make it happen.

I see this as part of the "drive people to the Crown Store" aspect of this. Ultra rare furniture materials while we are buried to our eyebrows in armor and weapon materials.

I have lost a lot of my enthusiasm over housing in the last few days, to the point where I cannot even get the energy to log into PTS. If I bought a house, it would just sit empty, so I really see no reason to bother.

The problem with this is there's a separate and much lower limit on how many achievement items you can place. The medium house I've spent the most time with (Mournoth Keep) allows 200 normal decorations but only 10 achievement rewards, and only 3 collectables.

So you might be able to use them to substitute certain items but not all of them.

I kind of like it being hard and expensive to decor your home. Not too expensive though I'd suggest better balance.

I feel like Zos is like my young son who has no real concept of price/value.

Ask him how much he thinks a Ferrari costs and he says, "About a hundred dollars".

Ask him how much he thinks his mom's tablet costs and he says, "ten thousand dollars"

Zos thinks a mansion should cost 4 million and a crafting table should cost 3 million. That puts their price/value logic right on par with an 8 year old child.

I'm a bit in the same boat, though I'm far and away more concerned with the Regulus, Heartwood, etc. costs than the lower-tier upgrade materials. It would be one thing if they actually dropped from every node (and in appropriate quantities), but you get at most one from every node (or two with that one Champion passive), but usually you get zero

I would feel the same way except that the Crown Store furnishings aren't even competitively priced, for the most part. $0.10 for a tree is totes fine, but $4 for a tiny cup is like, hella ridonculous. I'm totally fine with furnishings on the Crown Store, given that this is a free base-game update and nearly everything is available in-game, but I didn't expect the pricing to lack this much fine-tuning and I didn't expect the base-game procurement methods to be as bad as the Glass Motif grind. Even if the only change was to make Heartwood, Regulus, etc. drop from every node instead of every 10 nodes that would be a step in the right direction.

Wow, that's some interesting pricing. I already suspected there's been no coordination between the teams deciding the gold cost, crown store cost and crafting cost of each item and now I'm wondering if the people pricing up different crown store items even talked to each other.

Wait, gold upgrade materials are used to craft furniture? I had no idea. This seems like a terrible idea. Why not just create a new item like "gold bar" and have it used to craft the furniture instead of already overpriced tempering alloys. You could have them drop from dungeon bosses to incentivize running them.

Kind of. I don't think housing stuff itself takes any gold mats...

But in order to get crafting tables, DPS skeleton etc. you have to buy it with these Writ Vouchers. The only way to get these is RNG will give you a "master crafter writ" when finishing your writ sometimes.. and will ask for a specific item which can (often) be legendary and rare style.

So you have a ton of people burning gold mats on these "master writs" in order to get enough vouches for the really wanted stuff like crafting stations and DPS dummies.

There's more to the whole writ thing (like it can ask for epic quality stuff) but I hit the high points.
