We did vDSA for around 4 hours and got a 20 score

    Not 20k, just 20

We were all 4 inexperienced though so

To get on the leaderboard you need to complete the trial.
There are 4 factors that can influence the score:
    - you get 1k points for every soul you have left
    - there is a bonus / malus depending on how long it takes you to complete the trial
    - activating hardmode (only for 12man trials) provides a big boost to your score
    - if you don't kill all adds (e.g. by riding past them between 1st and 2nd boss in MoL) your score will be lowered a bit

The time penalty is basicly the main reason for extremely low scores. Some players who don't have enough time will start a trial, leave their pc running over night and continue the next day.

No you need to kill the last boss.
Also 16k was your "baseline" score. There will be bonuses/penalties in the end of the trial. For example, if DSA run took you 6 hours, you will probably get something like 2k or so (dont know exactly, just for example).

First of all you need to complete the whole Trial to get a leaderboard score, and once you do, score works like this:

    3a83e482ea.png

You have the "points" you earn, that's 2,000 per arena in vDSA if I recall correctly. Then you have a "vitality bonus" of 1,000 points per life. All of that is modified by a "time modifier" where if you go faster than the recommended time your score is higher, slower your score is lower. The recommended times are (or were, if it has been changed) are as follows:

    AA: 15 minutes.
    HRC: 15 minutes.
    SO: 25 minutes.
    VMOL: 45 minutes.
    VDSA: 60 minutes.

So a score like ~250, is just a completion done with zero vitality and around a ~3.7 hour time. :).

For 12-man trials, each enemy you kill grants points (more points for bosses) (skipping enemies isn't a penalty per se--it's just potential points that you opted to not earn), each vitality you have left grants points, and hard mode grants bonus points.

For the two arenas, each completed stage grants points, each remaining vitality grants points, and for vMA, each unused sigil grants points.

You won't get a final score until the final boss has died, and that score is then subject to a time penalty or time bonus. For vAA/vHRC, the cutoff is 15 minutes, for vSO, it's 25 minutes, for vDSA it's 60 minutes, and for vMA, it's 90 minutes (the vDSA/Craglorn cutoffs made more sense before they were revamped). Meaning, if you take longer than those times, you'll receive a score deduction, and if you take less than those times, then you'll get a bonus added to your score.

A 6-hour run of vDSA, for example, will have such a huge time penalty that it'll probably end up with something less than 1K.
