I have seen a lot of people very upset about the crate system brought in to ESO. I posted the below message in response to someone who was upset about the crates. With the idea of a healthy conversation please let me know where you stand and if I have any incorrect information......

I haven't bought any crates yet(n probably wont) but I have no problem with other players are doing it if they aren't getting anything that will give them an in game edge. If you want a mount or pet or w.e bad enough to buy a ton of crates knowing there's no guarantee it will drop that's on you. That has no effect on me. Now if some people got gear upgrades better then what I could earn then yeah I would have a problem with it.

Also most games that invoke this type of thing and fail as an MMO is bc they were gonna fail anyway. I don't know of any game that let you "gamble" on appearance upgrades and failed bc of that specifically.

If ZOS makes more money bc people want to gamble on things that do not give competitive advantage then that can only help me as a player of ESO as they will have more money to further develop the game. I am not saying they will use it for such but I surely don't see it as a negative.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but this is mine.

I agree, if they were pay to win though, that would be a totally different story.

If you want to get all Psychiatrist on here, people aren't mad at ZOS specifically, they're mad at the fact that they know we can't control ourselves when it comes to Gambling. It's all so shiny and mysterious and hopeful that this money will get us something shiny, oh we didn't get the shiny? Well maybe a little more money and I will get the shiny! Oh not this time? Well maybe MORE...

They know we can't control ourselves but rather being angry at ourselves we want to be angry at the people who brought all this within our reach, to move the blame elsewhere.

I humored the thought of getting a few crates last night. I have 1,000 crowns which means I could've bought 2 crates, but I can VERY EASILY purchase more crowns through Xbox Live if I wasn't careful and didn't get any cool shinies in those crates. It's a very slippery path to go down and one of the worst things people hate is seeing how fast their money goes away.

I understand people buy them with hopes of getting "shinies" but it effects game play of others 0. I don't see how this is ruining the game.

The thing is, a lot of people upset with crown crates would happily throw money at zos if the items were available for direct purchase -- we just don't want to gamble for said items so it kinda sucks :/

I agree with you OP, I personally will never break and pay for gambling crates, and not remotely interested in the shiny thingies that can be attainable.

If some weak people want to spend tons of money on crates then whine on the forums , then its tough luck, all down to choice.

    Pretty much my situation.

I'm a sub. I rarely (never) spend the 1,500 crowns I get a month. So, why not start just spending them on crates as they come in?

    ...

But what if I didn't get a mount in those 1,500 crowns? I mean, if I just ducked on to Xbox Live and bought another 1,500 crows, the mounts SURE to come in the next batch of crates, yeah?

So far I've controlled myself, because I know once I get started it's easy to keep going (just ask those whole pizzas I ate in one sitting when I SWORE I would keep some for breakfast & lunch the following day)

Couldn't have said it better. This right here is why most are upset.

Emphasis mine. You might not be saying it, but you (and others) really do seem to be implying it.

The idea that "more money for ZOS = more money for development of things other than Crown Crates" seems to have been taken as axiomatic by some. It really isn't. We have no idea how and where ZOS is going to spend that money. For all we know it could end up being spent, in its entirety, on developing new zones... or going straight into investor's pockets. We just don't know. Until we do know, using that argument to justify the existence of Crown Crates is arguing based on facts not in evidence.

Last Thursday when the crates arrived i was online a few hours after the patch came out, i gave away all the items in my craftbag to another player, sent all my gold to another. Unsubbed and uninstalled the game.

And that's the way it shall remain. ZoS will not get a penny from me anymore. And i'm one of those who bought everything that was ever released in the crown store.

I want to buy what i want directly, not ever gamble for it.

    • Crown crates cheapen one of the most beloved franchises in video games.
    • Crown crates take items that people would gladly buy directly and lock them behind RNG.
    • Crown crates are exploitive in their implementation and take advantage of the vulnerable among us.
    • Crown crates, when similar things have appeared in other MMOs, tend to redirect developer investment from the game proper and into the crates themselves.
    • Crown crates attract the kind of players that like to spend ungodly sums of money for epeen status and tend to repulse the kind of players that care about things like setting and lore.
    • Crown crates create a divisive atmosphere inside the game, splitting it into haves and have-nots.
    • The detail and polish of the entire crown crate experience was heavily invested in by ZOS while other basic functionality that has been desired for years still eludes us (decent guild store UI, crafting previews, guild management tools, etc).
    • ZOS took Pacrooti, one of the most beloved characters in the game, and turned him into a slimy street-corner pusher.

That's what I have off the top of my head OP, I'm sure there are more reasons.

    Hello everyone,

This post is to let you know that we've gone ahead and closed this thread. The reason being that there are many Crown Crate threads currently active, and we'd like to avoid having so many open on the same topic. For the general discussion on Crown Crates, we recommend using this thread here.

    Thank you for understanding!
