Why do people frequently post up their DPS results on each boss fight?

I read a story once about a guy who got his first job working in a stock room. It wasn't the job he wanted working the front counter, but he needed the job so he accepted.

On that first day the owner of the business gave him some instructions to stack some boxes on one wall of the stock room and then left for a time. When he returned the young man had stacked the boxes, but In a haphazardly fashion. The owner showed his disapproval and said to the young man, "Why have you not stacked the boxes neatly and where you can see the labels?" The young man replied "You didn't tell me to do it that way."

The owner smiled then and continued. "Since it is the first day of your first job I will share a secret with you that will serve you the rest of your life." "In whatever endeavor you perform, always do it with excellence. Even if it is only stacking boxes. Now let's restack these boxes with excellence."

There is nothing wrong with players in a game trying for excellence. A DPS meter is a tool for this.

What exactly is your point? You can strive for excellence without rubbing it in other peoples faces. IF your dps is that great it will already be apparent anyway.

Bragging rights. If you're offended by how good they are, git gud. If you're offended by how bad they are, post your own and shame them into Oblivion.

    It's a dog-eat-dog world.
Like I said before. Am I suppose to bake them some cookies for their "bragging rights?" How would you feel if you were busting your ass off for weeks and possible months grinding vMA for that sharpen inferno staff, and yet some player who happen to play vMA once manage to get the inferno staff on the first try? You wouldn't feel so good knowing that someone is rubbing it in your face?

Also the "git gud" is irreverent in this game considering the fact that your DPS consist of having good gear, and that good gear consist of grinding a particular dungeon/Trials until the cows come home.

This game doesn't require skills... it requires grinding gears that happens to have good traits in them... like the sharpen inferno staff from vMA.
OK so you got addons that records your DPS... good for you.... Are you that egotistical to actually believe that the rest of the world cares for what number you get for each boss kills? Jesus get over yourself! Nobody cares what high number you get. Just play the damn game already and quit spamming the chat with your nonsense junk.

I think I'm going to start using the ignore button.

    @raidentenshu_ESO
DPS numbers are progression. DPS milestones (20k, 30k, 40k) provide competition among DPS players. It's the same as when you finally get that last piece of divines armor and you link it to you guild to celebrate. For many players, they have gear, they have CP, they have achievements, so working on pushing DPS numbers is content for them.

Ofc, it can be abused, and that's annoying...

When I find any divines pieces that I happen to look for I don't publish them in public knowing full well that I'm going to be getting bombarded by players who seeks the same item. Some players are very persistent, and even offer gold to buy the item. Most of the time I don't even want to be dealing with this nonsense so I don't give them ammo to pester me :)

Ok to be fair it is not all ego but I agree with you, many do it for bragging rights to friends, kind of like how people compare sports teams against friends. It is actually really normal but it depends on how they do it.

@raidentenshu_ESO RIP if you play on PC, we have an addon that allows you to view every group members loot.
Sometimes people with the addon are polite, other times they still offer money and beg for it lol

I don't have the addon, because I don't want to see other peoples loot. I find it kinda intrusive lol but I've grown used to have my loot exposed... luckily I usually don't need anything, so I freely ask if anyone wants any of my loot.

Well, posting your dps in chat is an easy way to save it and analyze it after you're done with the dungeon. Or would you prefer it if your group mates would stop after every boss fight to write down their dps manually?
You do know that you can create separate chat channels, yes?

I don't give them any satisfaction whatsoever. I'm a dog trainer in RL... There was one meter I had (no longer using) that had a very specific (unmarked) spot that you had to click to get details. If you clicked it anywhere else it'd post to your chat bar. I don't know how many times I put DPS info to chat and the next time I hit [Enter] to type something it'd post the message. lol

But whatever, if people want to show off their DPS I am fine with it. Having their numbers in chat doesn't affect my gameplay at all.

    I care about their numbers.

We just nuked the boss in 25 seconds without breaking a sweat. It is a game and I am competitive. It's pretty much the only challenge good DPS have anymore: against each other.

Also, part of the reason there are good DPS in the first place is because they are constantly cirtical of their own builds and use DPS parses as ways to improve their build and their gameplay.

DPS meters do serve a purpose other than stroking e-peens.

No need to ignore. Copy the format and fake a higher number. They won't believe it, but that's the point. They'll still feel invalidated. A. you posted a bigger number, even if its fake, it steals their thunder. B. It shows how futile posting numbers is.

This isn't WoW where you can compare numbers. So screw with these people a bit. If they complain that you're lying, leave them behind. If they keep talking, tell them that their DPS would be higher if they did less talking and more damage. Large bloated egos are like balloons. Easily popped.

Actually, you confirm the OP's intuition.
Besides, resumes are for jobs, this is a game. Of course you're free to take the game as you want, but that doesn't mean you're entitled to judge others who take it more lightly, more cooperatively and less competitively.

Look, nobody has any problem with you using a DPS meter to tweak your build. But if you're constantly posting your numbers for all to see and boasting about how much damage you're doing or harping on everyone else for not "carrying their weight" if they do less damage than you do, then you're going to rub people the wrong way.

It is what good players do. If you had good dps you would do it. Also to let pugs know I did 80% of the damage by myself. I do love rubbing 35-40k+ no add boss fights in the face of the "meta" hating play your way casuals who need to realize they are being carried. Also it is your resume among other good players for end game networking.

So... shortly said... you confirm it's a pure ego thing aimed at showing the "good players" ' "awesomeness" by trying to make "less good players" feel small... ???
Actually, you confirm the OP's intuition.
Besides, resumes are for jobs, this is a game. Of course you're free to take the game as you want, but that doesn't mean you're entitled to judge others who take it more lightly, more cooperatively and less competitively.
also : pro-tip : if you don't want to pull 80% of the DPS by yourself nor to carry people... don't PUG !!!

I can't hear you over all my awesomeness. Pro-tip cup your hands when yelling up the mountain.
I didn't choose tank life, tank life chose me.

Coz when they skip home from school with there report cards in hand shouting "mummy mummy! I got a gold star!"
She tells them how clever and special they are, gives them a glass of milk, a cookie
    Aussie lag is real!

    ;)
Just be careful : it's lonely at the top, and visitors tend to come over for taking your seat rather than for conversation ;-)

    But I digress ;)

In a competitive group or trial then yes its fine, but random pug groups then its just showing off.

Luckily I'm on console so don't see it.
