Then, more recently, because of One Tamriel, they said not every quarterly update will be DLC.

Next update isn't a DLC as well. But I hope that after housing we get Vvardenfell, which can be even bigger than Orsinium.

P.S. Can someone PM me what games are you talking about, please? I found out I'm pretty bad at googling :(

I still have hopes that Vvardenfell will be a full-fledged expansion pack.

I know that, from my replies when people read Crown Crates threads, it might seem that I am jumping ship. By I am not, I am pretty much tying myself to the ship's mast and yelling at the fish.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Expansion packs are an outdated system these days. Seems only Blizzard is hanging on to them while everyone else moves to digital distribution and DLC.

I'm wondering, why would they even want to transition to F2P?

I mean look at Steam stats, ESO is doing great after 1T and Free Weekend. And that's only Steam, we also have usual PC\Mac players ( a lot I assume), and XBOX/PS audience must be big enough as well.

Just look at this online increase (via steamspy)

It would be kinda nice to celebrate Morrowind's 15th year, though :/

I mean, it doesn't have to be something that ZOS does all the time. Just once in a while. Besides, I want the Warden class to be introduced, and I imagine that a new class is too big of a deal to be put in a regular DLC.

Khajiit she would assume that free weekend it was perhaps a testing ground for F2P.

"If we can get this many players in a weekend and maybe some of those players will stump up for a crate or two then how many players could we get buying crates if we drop the box price altogether?" - perhaps?

The casual player is a less informed player, less likely to be concerned with long term performance and balance issues, less likely to care when the next new content is, still just as likely to spend.

What they do not understand is how vital a healthy community is to Tamriel. Khajiit left Middle Earth in another lifetime long ago. It was not just stat tomes in the store or loot boxes that paved the way for the departure of this one. It was also the gradual loss of a long standing community who gradually left because of things like loot boxes. When the friends were no longer there then it was no longer the same place to be.

LOL. ANYTHING offered for free will 'do great'

But there will always be a catch, NOTHING in life is ever free

I am not too sure about going F2P at least not for while yet, It seems more to me they are trying to use the advantages of both worlds B2P and F2P, especially now Crown Crates are coming which are a very well known F2P strategy.. I think we are more likely to see P2W before F2P and P2W is one thing these cash shop boxes really excel at bringing in revenue.

It's not the first time ZOS have done a free weekend. Overwatch just had one recently as well. I doubt very much that either is going to F2P.

I think they should add a "buy outright" option even if it's a bit more expensive than mounts and things used to be. For people who's intelligence will not permit them to buy a scam box.

Khajiit she would assume that free weekend it was perhaps a testing ground for F2P.

I don't think so. I think it was to assure that more states could legally participate on the contest thing they are having.
They did the same for the 1 million dollars one. Some places don't allow any sort of lottery that has a mandatory entry price, and the box price could be considered to be a mandatory entry price. They open it for everybody for free for a weekend, and the illegality is gone and they get some advertising. It's clever, in my opinion.

I personally think the free weekend was specifically timed with the Crown Crate implement and coincidentlly the Crown sale, they are trying to 'recruit' new naive, vulnerable customers, with 'fresh' wallets. knowing full well there will be a loss of current players due to Crown Crates
The will have facts and figures to back this up from their new head of marketing, this is exactly while they were hired.

Was the registration actually open for everyone during the free weekend? The contest rules don't mention any changes, temporary or otherwise, to the list of eligible countries, so I assumed the free weekend entry was available only as long as you meet all other criteria as well.

I think they should add a "buy outright" option even if it's a bit more expensive than mounts and things used to be. For people who's intelligence will not permit them to buy a scam box.

Despite the "didn't read but I want to insult people" posters who call the people who actually tested the boxes and filled that 100 pages+ overwhelmingly negative response thread "leeches", what you propose is what many of us asked for, several different constructively suggested ways in that thread.

We want to buy some of the shinies. We don't want to gamble and be forced to keep shinies we don't like and don't want. Being able to trade in "several" consumables that aren't pets, outfits, or mounts you don't want doesn't make the crates wonderful.

I want to buy the lions. Maybe the elk. I will never buy the crates to attempt to get them. I was one of the people on the pts who tested the things and contributed to the "overwhelmingly negative" thread.

As for the earlier "leeches" comment; I don't know. I was in the beta. I bought the imperial digital edition, I have the collector's edition [co-workers still haven't figured out what the heck Molag Bal is supposed to be; the statue is on my desk], I have the tiger loyalty reward. I have the clouded leopard, jaguar, black panther, lioness, lion, [I have guar, too, and I'm still not sure how that happened] alliance horse, alliance dog, nedic costumes, alliance rider outfit, a few of the khajiit items for my two khajiit characters, and I bought the extra 4 character slots. I have a subbed account that I bought all the dlc for with sub crowns, I have a second account not subbed that has all the dlc that I bought crowns to buy. The second account also has a few mounts and some shinies. At this point, I'm still subbed.

Guess that makes me a leech.

Yeah, the free weekend entry was available as long as you meet the other criteria, you just didn't have to buy the game to participate on it. They put the states where there is this restriction among the eligible ones since the beginning, and then made the free weekend later. If any legal issue arises they can say that people on that state that participated on the sweepstakes bought the game because they wanted to, since they had a free weekend during which they could enter the contest without buying the game.

I'm not well-versed on the USA laws and regulations, but this is the kind of thing that I can totally see a lawyer telling ZOS to do to avoid legal issues.

I am really sad this is happening. The crown store is one of the only bad parts about ESO(not the fact that it exist, but because they lock almost everything behind it rather rhan making some of it rare drops or rewards for hard content), and now they are making it worse by adding stuff locked behind RNG. ZoS is turning into EA at an alarming speed
    =(

Alright, I see what you mean. The states that remained excluded (Florida, New York, Rhode Island) have regulations about the value of prizes, so a free weekend wouldn't change anything - but it's possible that what you describe happened in some of the others.

I am not 100% sure that this is the case, they might have done it just for publicity much like Overwatch did a couple of weeks ago. But, you know, two birds with one stone maybe. I just don't think it has anything to do with the F2P conversion.

If Dwemer and Skeleton mounts are only available through Crown Crates I think my soul is going to shrivel a little. Or a lot.

They're almost guaranteed to be in the crates. They're a set just like the Atronach mounts and they were datamined two Halloweens ago, so if they haven't been released yet, what else could they possibly be held back for?

edit: I'm talking about skeletal mounts. I don't remember the Dwemer ones either.

At the end of the day yes Tamriel it can burn, the cratemeld can consume the land and all the decent mounts and cosmetics within it and an invasion of F2P players can soil zone chat beyond repair.

As long as there is The Rosy Lion, a decent supply of ale and good friends to drink and dance with then khajiit can carry on living. Let us huddle by the fireside yes and tell tales of a world before the cratemeld.

Also fishing. Khajiit needs fishing. Do not nerf my salmon yes.

I don't remember the Dwemer ones. I do remember a Wild Hunt set though, so there's another crate theme.

I think it's safe to assume any really good themed mounts will be crate only. Maybe they'll surprise me and the CS will still carry some good stuff. I'm not counting on it though since for the crates to remain popular, they have to outshine the regular CS. With heavy RnG as a factor, the crates will make much more money than the one time outright purchases for items.

If the bland camel for Black Fredas was any indication of what sort of things we can buy directly....

The main problem with the white camel was not the camel, but all the junk that came with it. I would have paid 1900 Crowns for the camel without the extra stuff. I didn't buy it because I did not know what I would do with that extra junk. All those poisons? Sheesh.

I buy stuff from the Crown Store, but November was just pitiful in this respect. Hopefully they saved everything for December, and they left something for us non-premium buyers who don't do Crown Crates.

@lordrichter I got it because the 2 riding lessons and the crown scrolls alone were worth more than the 1900 crowns and I could use them on alts, the camel was just kind of.. a bonus? For when I want to blend into the nothingness of the Alikr I guess! :P

I do hope there is something good in December. I have not really seen anything in the crown store that really made me have that "must have it!" feeling in a few months.
