Just because other people's concept of that term differs, does not automatically make them rude, immature, jerks, or insensitive.

You have a funny definition of rude. It is what it is though. If you don't see a problem with some of the actions taken by other players on this subject, you may be part of the problem.

Let's try and put this into a different light. And yes I will use an extreme examlpe. Let's say you are on the last round of VMA. Now right before you get to the coveted chest, someone comes in and takes it before you get there. It wouldn't make them rude at all right?

Your extreme example doesn't work at all. You bust your ass through 9 rounds solo to be rewarded a chest.

That's the absolute worst example because another player could never be introduced into the arena to "steal" the chest....

I told you it was extreme example, still has the same friggin premise, you do the work someone else gets the reward. If you can't understand that, then there is no point in trying to make you understand. Is it possible no because it's instanced, does the premise still fit, yes it does.

Cuz its sooooo much work to clear out 2 monsters for a couple of mats

Yet another one with a reading comprehension problem.

I think the poster was just poking fun, I wouldn't be so quick to assume people can't comprehend what you say.

    Hey congrats :)

But taking nodes while people are fighting the nearby mobs is still rude.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

First the mats are not yours until they are in your bag. Second it will respawn so no reason to get upset about it. Third there are plenty more nodes just waiting for you to go grab them.

To me it is a competition. No I am not purposefully chasing people about just to make their day miserable nor am I chasing them at all. I will race you to the next node if I see one and I want it need it for some reason.

However the twerps that claim everything in sight as theirs are quite annoying. I have no idea whether you are just there killing mobs or gathering and if you are not right on top of the node I figure it is fair game. So no I am not going to just leave it just in case you might be going after it.

Want to also note the best way to avoid having to compete for nodes is to go where there are few people. So right now the best place would not be Wrothgar due to the event.

    Well said.

I know it is but the more they complain about it the more I want to do it. If they ignore what I did and move on I won't follow them but if they get upset about it and whisper me I will follow them for a while. Personally I usually just skip over nodes unless it is dragonthorn or runes then I will snag them.

It is not an example of the race to get resources zos put into the game.

Wow, when I made the OP I honestly thought this forum was a good place to discuss the game and that most people were reasoned and respectful. How wrong I was and its really disappointing. I can now see why the forum is so heavily moderated.

Im a 44 year old family man. My RL is full, fruitful and a nice content place to be. I play the game casually for fun after long day at work, bathed the kids and my sausage and mash (with very nice gravy) is sitting nicely in my stomach. I have no need to ‘run to a forum to complain someone stole MY node’ in a freaking playstation game.

The point of the thread was that I was surprised people would do it. I see it as being a rude thing to do and wanted others opinions. Seriously, if it matters that much to the node ninjas’ to try and defend their morals so virally I’ll just mail you the mats. Im sure I picked up some rekuta’s you’ll wet yourselves over. Maybe the odd Kuta so you’ll cream your pants with those. The ancestor silk is to die for.

Im certainly not UPSET by it and for some to start quoting dictionary imperfections in my posts is just a whole new level of immaturity.

Its clear from the posts that some think its rude and unethical and some think its fine to walk into the middle of a fight and collect the node in amongst it. Some even think its funny. Some justify it with ‘rolepying a thief’. All opinions and justifications, everyone is entitled to.

Im still firmly in the former but as its not a game law and the mechanics allow it, then so be it. I’ll just continue to play the game as the respectful guy I am in RL and the others…. Well, you just do what you do.

    Thanks for the opinions.

Ps for those that say 'its only 2 monsters'. Correct, but as they are scaled to 160 and some of us are not far above that, it takes more than the one hit wonders that the super dupey, up themselves players can do.

It's not that you "get upset" about it, it's just that you see it a little bit too strictly. "unethical" for instance is in my opinion far too strong an adjective. Also, there are a whole variety of different situations in that case.

Let's assume you drive by a bakery and realize you need bread. There's only one bread left in the shop. You take a few minutes to park the car. During that time, someone walking by the bakery buys that last bread. Is he/she being rude ? Has he/she seen you parking your car and hurried up to be there first ? Does it make it more rude ? If you're in a wheelchair and it takes you more time to park your car and get there, does that make this other person even more rude ? The discussion could be endless, and involves a lot of assumptions about the "intentions" of that other person, who might be plain rude, but also simply not paying attention (and should he/she pay attention ? It's about buying bread after all...)

The point, in my opinion, is that there are plenty of other bakeries around. You'll have your bread no matter what. And yes, you wasted some time parking your car for nothing. Oh well...

Why am I telling you this ? Because I used to get all mad in this game with that kind of situations : people ganking you when turning in a PvE quest in Cyrodiil (yes that's infuriating), people stealing chests right under your nose in Imperial City while you're fighting mobs, etc etc. , and other people (here on this forum, or in guilds) actually taught me to take it more lightly and to not overstate the "naughtiness" of those people. It made my game more enjoyable, that's all. But of course you're free to draw your own lines wherever you want.

I used to think community in this game was awesome only second to LotRO that I have experienced. Boy how things have changed in couple of years. This is one of the most toxic forums I've been part of.

Just make fast build for farming. I use 5x fiord + 5x darkstride, 2x velidreth, and gap closer on my s&b bar. If there is a mob or two on my node, they die as soon as I charge on them, thanks to velidreth. If they survive by any chance, bar swap and whirlwind do the trick. Only on rare occasions I fail to be first one to get to the node. And tbh, I get triggered only if I fail to get 1st to the chest.

    Well, yes.

just like when the Cowboys take the lead with 1s left on a sixty yard field goal and win the game, even though the redskins have been ahead the entire game up until then.

Or if the professional athlete thing bother you insert any other number of casual games like poker among friends and a bluff or bowling and striking out in the tenth.

ZOS built some rewards in the game to be specifically kill-and-get and for those once you start the fight if you get the kill others CANNOT take them from you.

ZOS deliberately built other resources to be win-race-and-get. First to access the node gets the goodies.

They even added a second or two shutout for race-nodes treasure chests so if you fail the pick others can try and pick them... showing they intent these things to be competed for and not just given to who gets anywhere close.

For argument sake, do you know this for sure or are you deducting this and therefore it is your opinion?

Is there a potential for this having other reasons, perhaps technical sort, maybe game balancing? The chests, could the intention have been to give you an incentive to try harder but not to punish you too much if you fail?

I don't know personally as I have not read anything coming directly from ZOS in regards to these points.

Thats why I find those developer interviews or blogs most interesting, often they will tell you about unintended side effects and how they tried to avoid those in future content.

Lots of inexperienced disrespectful farmers out there. Like those that race me to the node when they clearly see I'm going for it. There's lots out there, go to the next node. There's no need for that level of competition and it usually doesn't work out in their favor anyway. I usually get to the node first and harvest while they wait, not sure why they wait. But then they have to race me to next node and they often lose that too. If they would have just let the first node go and move on, they could have had the next one.

The worst is when someone sneaks up and steals your node while you're doing all the work fighting for it. This is what enemy pulls are good for. Or just leave and let them work for it.

A few good ones out there tho. Help when you're being swarmed or throw a few heals your way.

Take, for example, the issue of larger trade guilds employing dummy guilds to occupy trade carts. That would be an example of the large trade guild being not content with their win through the market, but also undermining the very possibility of competition.

Greed. Gotta have it ALL. They can't allow anyone to have any mat if they might be able to snake it. They can't allow others to have that trader cart if it might keep the lovely shiny gold from to them. Need to have the stuff. Need to make more gold, more temps, more wax, more kuta, more silk, more digits to that (fake) account balance will make them happy for an instant before they need to push it higher. Greed. That might be the ore that pushes them to the next zero on their balance, so of course the greedy rationalize that nothing belongs to anybody else until the greedy person cannot get their hand on it.

Let's explain this as simply as possible. Nodes are not yours until they are in your inventory. Just because you saw it first doesn't mean a damn thing.

Straw man deception alert! When the discussion is about X, and someone doesn't want to address X, they instead claim the talk is about Z and address Z. Otherwise known as "pulling a fast one" by switching the details.

It's not about seeing a node.

Nobody is claiming they get dibs just because they saw it. That's you using a deceptive argument tactic.

The claim is that someone sees a node protected by mobs, so harvesting the node requires work to be done. They do not avoid work, they are not lazy, so they are doing the work to earn the node and someone else comes and takes the node that they did not earn.

That's where the outrage comes from. I see a node or chest, I am doing the work to get it, and someone comes along and takes my figurative 'paycheck'.

Nodes without mobs, that's like money found blowing around on the ground. No effort goes into picking it up. Nodes WITH mobs, that's like money you get after you win a fight - you earned it by winning the fight.

Get it now? Not gonna try a straw man switcheroo again, right?

Yes, that's why this kind of move is not particularly "classy", but imho it's not worth an "outrage". I'm usually against people who say that "offenses only offend you if you let them", but in that case, it sort of applies.
It's just a node. There's plenty of them. Move on.

Some think competition makes everyone better, others think competition enlarges the gap between the powerful and the less powerful ones. That debate is as old as human societies and still unsolved - as proven by nearly every single election in any country.

Does the same drama apply to a resource node in a video game ? Where a little competition has been introduced by design in order to make farming less boring ?

If you want the mats then yeah just take them, they don't belong to anyone until they're in their inventory. It reminds me of when I see tourists in the city letting everyone get on the bus before them, then the bus fills up and they're left to wait for the next one .

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for manners and politeness, but we are talking about imaginary materials from a video game, does it matter all that much?

I would agree, move on. However, there are not plenty of nodes - there are plenty of spawn locations. And in wrothgar at this time plenty of players. And a respawn timer. It's not beyond imagining that they are just not there.

I know I've gone from the snow line below orsinium well past the julianos station without seeing anything respawned.

I've walked the earth long enough to say with confidence... In any thing that a score is kept, or even can be informally kept, people (in general) will keep score and will do things to raise their score while reducing the score of others. *Everything* can be made into a pissing contest, in some manner. I've seen children loudly fight over which was more quiet while they were in the store, with the prize being who got to sit with the travel dvd player. Wrap your head around that - yelling back and forth who was more quiet.

So yes, the same drama applies to a resource node in a video game.

That's where the outrage comes from. I see a node or chest, I am doing the work to get it, and someone comes along and takes my figurative 'paycheck'.

Yes, that's why this kind of move is not particularly "classy", but imho it's not worth an "outrage". I'm usually against people who say that "offenses only offend you if you let them", but in that case, it sort of applies.
It's just a node. There's plenty of them. Move on.
I would agree, move on. However, there are not plenty of nodes - there are plenty of spawn locations. And in wrothgar at this time plenty of players. And a respawn timer. It's not beyond imagining that they are just not there.

They didn't decrease the node respawn timer, they haven't increased the amount of nodes. The area is the exact same.

People are foolish to think there's enough nodes for everyone, I've experienced the same as you, the map looking empty but players scavenging everything that has a glow.

If people were worried about not enough nodes, go to a different map. I've farmed 3x the ore in a small map than I have in wrothgar. There's too many players trying to get their piece of the pie in an empty map.

When you have an event like orsinium anniversary everyone and their mothers will flood the area looking for nodes. It will bring out the players who don't care about others.

I never have people racing node to node where I farm. I choose to go to the more empty places and have found more mats than I could dream of.

First world problems, move twenty virtual meters in any direction to find the next node.

They do it on purpose. No excuses. Why? Because they can.

    Well, yes.

just like when the Cowboys take the lead with 1s left on a sixty yard field goal and win the game, even though the redskins have been ahead the entire game up until then.

Perhaps it's a competition for you, however I make plenty of gold without needing to step on other players. Still, your argument is hard to believe. Seems more like playing devils advocate for rude behavior. No one is stopping you from being rude. That's your choice. But please spare us the crap comparisons.

Bad analogy. The person didn't watch you as you fought off multiple monsters and then come and take the bread which was sitting right under your feet since you made it obvious that you were fighting the monsters in order to get the bread.
