2 Temp Alloys from 1000 ore?

I just refined over 1000 ore with max crafting skills and only got 2 alloys...but when I refined cloth and wood I get crap loads of rosin and wax....

How is that ratio even possible? Why is alloys given such a crappy low rate with RNG?

It's random, sometimes that happens.

I recorded my drops of gold mats from refining for a few months earlier this year and based on about 2000 refine attempts for each type of material metal actually dropped slightly more often then cloth/leather and wood dropped the least BUT across all mats the per session rates varied wildly and I could get 0 out of 100 refines and the next time I'd get 12 out of the same number.

Not just this once though....

It always seems to be lower rate everytime with alloys...

You can even see by the price of alloys.

Almost every time I get lower rates with alloys than anything else.

It is not balanced.

I do have more than my fair share of luck in game, and in a lot of other unrelated thingies too, but I have yet to get a sharpened VmA staff, after a lot of runs, so RNG giveth and taketh away lol

It's just you. For a long time I was keeping track of the rates at which I got different levels of upgrade mats for the different crafts, and over a big enough sample it was virtually identical.

The reason the price of alloys is higher has nothing to do with the rate at which you get them per 1000 raw mats or anything, it has to do with the fact that it's faster and easier to farm for tannins (because you get them from leather as well as from plants), while for resins there's simply a lower demand (as the only things that need resins are weapons, overall people simply need fewer of them).

Refining rate is the same. 5% per refinement of 10 raw materials. Price is related to:

1). Both leather scraps and raw cloth can give Dreugh Wax. Only ore can give Tempering Alloy. So you typically end up with more Dreugh Wax than Alloy.
2). Dreugh Wax used on 14 armor pieces. Temporing Alloy used on 7 armor pieces + 7 weapons. Many of those weapons are dual-wielded. So you have just as much need, if not more, for Temporing Alloys. But half the items to refine to get those Temporing Alloys. Also, weapons *must* be upgraded to gold. The difference in DPS between CP160 purple weapons and CP 160 gold weapons is massive. This is not the case with armor. Purple CP160 armor is only very slightly worse than gold CP160 armor.
3). Rosin has similar rate as Temporing Alloy because can only be refined from one item (rough wood), but only used on 5 weapons and shield. So similar supply as Temporing Alloy, but much lower demand.

Dreugh Wax = High demand but also high supply.
Temporing Alloy = Very high demand but low supply.
Rosin = Low Demand but low supply.

I've gutted over 700 fish and haven't had a single perfect roe since i began playing the game again on PS4. Maybe i'm looking back with my rose tinted glasses on, but it felt like i got a perfect roe every 50 fish on the xbone. Yet I have found 3 sharpened spinner swords, 1 sharpened inferno staff and 2 sharpened daggers. And the entire Spriggans attire in divines without too much hassle.

What the RNG Gods taketh in one hand, they giveth with the other. I would like to be able to make a single XP potion, though. Especially when I paid 100k to get the recipe weeks ago.

Price for alloy is higher because of higher demand. It is a stam heavy armor meta which means tons of alloy for weapons and armor.

Last time I refined some ore it was 100-150 and got 2 tempering alloys.

Well the prices seem to have taken off since 1T on PS4 Eu. Before it was steady at 15000 per piece and has jumped upwards to almost 24000.

So maybe the RNG has been changed after all?

People are upgrading all these new 1T gear sets. It is a demand thing, not an RNG thing. As more and more people get their desired 1T gear and upgrade it to gold, demand will drop and prices will drop. This happens every update, but there are *so* many new sets with 1T that the effects have been exaggerated.

I really believe the RNG can get 'stuck' which creates the long droughts. A while ago I did a small experiment. I went out and got 200 fish. For the first 100 fillet, I did it all at once and I got 1 roe. For the next 100, I did them in groups of 10 with long periods of breaks (a few hours to a day) in between, and I got 3 roe. Now this was just me, and in order to do a real study you would need many people trying this, but then again, RNG is crappy.

I've played this game since the beginning on PC. Though I have never kept real records, my drop rate for tempering alloy has always been much much lower than my drop rate for rosin and dreugh wax. It's so bad that I don't use gold heavy armor because the game design changes too often for me to afford the tempering alloy. I only use gold weapons about half the time too to conserve tempering alloy. Not fun, not fun at all

This is a variation of the "gamblers fallacy". In casinos, the roulette tables will have big digital signs next to them listing the last 20 or so numbers to come out. Do you think they are doing that to help the player? Of course not! They want you to look at board and say, "No odd number has come out in a while. I bet one is due! I'm going all in on odd." Or, "14 has come out three times in the last 20 spins. I bet it is more likely to come out than other numbers. I am going to bet that!" Or, "No red number has come out on this table in a while, I am going to go to the other roulette table."

But all of this is random and the randomness is most visible in small sample sets (thus the last 20 spins, not last 20,000 spins).

You can all jump in circles and do rain dances and kiss your "R" key and log in and out and use different crafting stations ... but it is still a completely independent roll each time with no gold temper 19 of 20 times.
