Define: "Casual"

This should be fun! Define what you think a casual player is... as in... what content you have to complete to not be a casual, amount of time in game daily/weekly, player ability, or whatever arbitrary standards you set for "casuals".

Also, let us know whether you think you are casual or not. Try not to be rude! Stick with forum rules!

False. I would consider myself pretty casual but I would rather earn everything than have it handed to me.

I think what @Isellskooma might be saying is players that want things handed to them are casuals, and not that people that consider themselves casuals all want things handed to them. But I won't put words in their mouth.

So honestly, this game was too tedious for me, not because of content, but because of item management. Every time I log into the game, eventually I pick up, yet another motif item and remember they're trying to get me to buy a subscription to handle all the crafting materials they've inundated us with. When I'm trying to clear out my inventory for good by deconstructing/etc, I'm reminded that it takes a long time and the action I get before it just doesn't feel worth it. The devs seem to understand this problem and want to make me pay money every month to make up for it. I don't get it. When I was active I bought DLCs and mounts and pets, but don't want a sub? Sorry, we're going to make the game suck for you. That's a terrible design. Especially when I was paying money idiots!

    /rant over

Actually no, it's not. So Bethesda has done something very stupid and they've made the price of crowns very fluid. I think they just recently made them cheaper. Last year, they did a half-off sale around thanksgiving. I felt super shafted because I was paying for a sub and using my sub to buy DLCs just in case I canceled. Well I could have had the DLCs and more fun in-game items if I had just waited and not subbed. Basically, they incentivize waiting it out, which is bad for them. What they SHOULD be doing is putting items on sale in terms of crowns, not crowns on sale (making things half off). Also, I did feel like the price of the DLCs was very expensive compared to how many crowns I got from my sub, it looks like they've started decreasing prices which is good. Anyway I've been off the game for months and have lost almost all interest.

    /2nd rant over

The broken party finder didn't help either. They fixed it for like a month and then after that I couldn't find groups and said screw it. Unless they fixed it again? I'm casual and I don't like pining for guild members all the time. Being able to hit a button and run content was fun while it lasted.

Casuals are not pressed to complete game content in an optimal manner, and maybe not even in a timely manner.

I think that the people who want stuff handed to them are "lazy" (or "impatient") and not "casual".

    Easy:

Casual plays the game for fun.

Hardcore plays the game to get the best stuff and the best numbers and to be the best.

That IS this game right now. It handles everything to everyone. You can log in with whatever lvl and do anything.
So anyone can casually log in and do anything they want.
    That is what casual means.

    Define: "Casual"
Someone like me who plays a couple of hours a week without any pressure, perceived or otherwise.

I got 4 chars to VR16 before there was such a thing as a free CP lunch, finished all dungeons and trials multiple times over and spent some quality time in Cyrodiil.
Heck, i even won a few duels!

I also have all crafts maxed (On all 4 mains), all 9 traits researched for everything on my crafters and more mats and gear than i could ever use.
And in my spare time, i run my own Guild and maintain my resource mapping AddOn.

For me the most important part of ESO is that i still have fun playing it after more than 3 years.

Everything else is just gravy on the cake ...

    As a casual, I agree!

Craglorn? Never done it since I wanted to finish Caldwell Gold first. Vmsa, vet trials and the update VDsa? Captain, looks like we'll land sometime in 2018.

I don't want them handed to me at all, I'm just too busy all the time getting distracted by friends!

I'd consider myself "casual". I like to PVP and PVE- but I'm not outstanding in either field. My priorities are to have a good time while teamed up with my wife. Weekly scores don't concern me at all.

I like to be competitive and get good gear... but not at the expense of spending 8 hours on maelstrom arena or having the exact meta build that a vet trial would want. I don't like to hold people back, either. I know my limits. I don't do 30-40k DPS... so I don't sign up for vet Trials.

I cannot stress enough, though... there's a difference between a casual player and a bad player.

Nothing irks me more than to run a dungeon with a healer who spams BoL. Or a DPS that stands in the distance spamming snipe. Or a tank that aggros and just stands there holding block. Or even a player that's normally good... but they're so drunk or stoned that they're basically worthless in a group.

So, there's bad players, casual (good) players, and elite players.
Want to enjoy the game more? Try both PvP (crybabies) and PvE (carebears). You'll get a better perspective on everyone's opinion.

Being a "casual" in many MMOs has become synonymous with a dirty word.

The literal meaning of the term has been removed and it nearly always gets used in a condescending fashion to identify players that are not raiding, not min-maxing, not doing the grind till you drop thing, not PvP war-machines, and basically not doing/being anything at all in a game which other players have decided is "THE THING" to be/do etc. Add "filthy," and "lousy" and "lazy" as prefixes and you get the idea.

All of the above is nonsense btw.

"Casual," just like "Hardcore," tends to have as many definitions as there are players in some cases.

As someone who loves raiding, min maxing, gear and achievements chasing, and grinding till I fall asleep at the keyboard, etc. for me casual is still pretty cut and dry. I think of myself as a "casual" because for me, ALL games are a casual affair meant to be for fun. I don't stake my life nor my self esteem on them. Anyone that approaches games in this manner, regardless of what they do in them, is "a casual" in my book.

No, it's simply "bad". Hardcore player is the one who takes the game seriously and tries to be the best of the best, which doesn't neccessarily means he will ever become one. He's also enjoys difficult content and most likely PvP, because this what makes being best of the best have a point.

Why do you think hardcore players don't play for fun? Some people find working hard and overcoming challenges towards some goal fun. Those are hardcore players in MMO.

Someone who plays the game casually. An on-and-off player who doesn't have an actual commitment with the game, logs in the game only when they feel like it (as opposed to, say, someone who feels like they have to log in during a certain time to do content x or y, a casual player doesn't feel like they "have" to do anything) and doesn't have long term goals. They don't care if they are unable to get the BiS gear, they often don't even know what the BiS gear is because they don't care enough to do research. "It is a game, not a job". They don't care for being able to do super hard content because they find it frustrating, not fun, so they just ignore it. That's a "true casual".

I do not agree with calling players that want everything to be handed to them "casuals". Call these players "spoiled" instead, or "whinners", "francis", I don't care. A player who wants stuff despite being unable to get it on their own doesn't necessarily play the game casually. An actual casual doesn't care enough to come to the forums to complain.

I do not believe in the casual vs hardcore dichotomy, as if you are either one or the other. I believe lots of players are in-between these categories, approaching some aspects of the game casually and other aspects in a more hardcore manner. That's how I roll.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I am hoping that "playing for fun" would apply to more than just casual players. I consider myself casual, but farming is what ESO is about these days. Especially, during the Plunderfest. Still, I find it necessary to stand around bosses to get set drops to match my level, which is something I never used to do. I change up the bosses, but right now I want a set from a specific zone, so I cycle through one dungeon, a couple dolmens, maybe three easy to get to delves, and whatever world boss happens to interest people. It is a much more boring existence because I used to range across the whole world and now I am stuck in one zone waiting X minutes for the bosses loot to reset. Weee!

Inexperienced / unwilling to learn and inform himself, not invested in the game, gives up content on first death and generally isn't much of a proficient gamer. You're either that kind of casual or the kind that tries to improve out of these things and be competent. It usually isn't an insult but there are many of those people that want everything handed to them and they proudly call themselves casuals while attacking anyone who takes the game serious and actually understands its mechanics.
