It'll give you an extra 100ish Spell Power if you Crit often enough, which usually happens. So it definitely is more powerful with a high enough uptime.
The catch is, you need to be able to farm ICP to get it in the first place. Straight upgrades from difficult content seems correct to me, eh?

Okay.... but the reason I'm confused is because that's exactly what I was thinking. It all seems too easy.
I constantly have up Wall of Elements and Liquid Lightning while weaving Light Attacks in between every skill cast. My Force Pulse strikes three times. My Ult is another DoT. There are so many Crits going on that the uptime would be almost permanent as long as I keep up a good rotation.
This makes it clearly more powerful than Julianos, and by a good margin.
Are there any secret catches to Scathing Mage? Maybe it doesn't proc on DoTs or something else that would weaken its effectiveness? I haven't tested this set and need to confirm that it is stronger than any of the other possible alternatives for Magicka Sorcerer before grinding it out in Divines!

It says "When you deal direct Critical Damage, you have a 20% chance to increase your Spell Damage". I haven't tried it but the "direct critical damage" leaves me to believe it doesn't work on DoTs.
Burning Spellweaver tooltip states, " When you deal damage with a Flame Damage ability, you have a 20% chance to apply the burning status effect to the enemy and gain 600 Spell Damage" and does proc off DoTs.
Well, try not soloing it. I know, dealing with people has to be the worst, but sacrifices have to be made sometimes.
Hey guys,
I can see you actually know what you're talking about here, so just a quick question in regards to scathing vs spellweave set.
On a ranged magicka nightblade my fire staff weaves will proc scathing. I've been farming this set... should I get scathing instead? Has anyone tried both sets?
Thanks

***IMPORTANT: It seems that Scathing Mage can only proc off direct damage attacks. NOT DoTs! Only a Magicka Nightblade has use for this set.
On Magicka Sorc it's a no go***
I'm a Magicka Sorcerer DPS. I want to utilize two base setups unless something more powerful releases Q1 2017.
Of course you can change things up in numerous ways and slot many different sets (Aether, Burning Spellweave, Mother's Sorrow, Spinner's Garments, Grothdarr, Willpower, Skoria, etc) but these are the setups I really want to use. The issue I have is that I am not sure about one particular set in my "Group Dungeon" setup. I want to use whatever the BiS 5-piece set is for group dungeons on my Magicka Sorcerer.
Essentially I have one question - How effective is Scathing Mage over other group dungeon sets such as Julianos?

OP if your a Sorc you can do the first ICP boss on normal solo pretty ez might die some ( no way past tenderizer with flesh sculpter ) I usually alternate it and the first 2 bosses in wgt for reset time. Just use a pet if needed. It's easier solo if you have down time and everyone is going 100 different directions for gear with last patch.

Last i checked, it wasn't procing off DoTs...
