The first console game that would be recognizable as an actual RPG with the traditional RPG elements.

Since people are also listing MMOs: Everquest online adventures

Dungeons & Dragons in the '70s. For Science Fiction RPG it was Traveller in '78 or '79. I remember we never got much past creating characters in Traveller, that part was super fun.
Am a whimsical Generation Jones gamer. Online RPGs hooked me since '94 and no sign of stopping soon...

To be serious, that would be Dungeons and Dragons, pencil and paper in the 3rd grade. I still remember pouring through the Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, and Dungeon Master's Guide.

Dungeons & Dragons here too, back when it was really new and church people were getting their smalls in a twist because the game contained demons. Fabulous game, made for people with imaginations!

Yes, I'm really that old! ;)
RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.

What was your first RPGs?

Old text based game called Moria on my 286. Had to go 50 levels down and fight the Balrog. Took us forever to beat because for the first year we didn't know there was a command to save your game.

Before I saw this thread I thought that at 33 I'm among the older ESO players. But looking trough the replies I realize that I'm average or below average age :)

Final Fantasy III (aka FF 6) SNES

I agree. Nintendo had it good during the SNES era with RPG games. The Nintendo 64 was great too, but we all know thats when RPG's went CD Rom, leaving Nintendo dry for a long time. That being said Chrono Trigger on SNES and Chrono Cross on PS1 great stories and character development.

Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger were 2 of my other favorites. I just could not get into secret of evermore though. Ff 2 was also great. Dragon warrior 4 on nes was my favorite of that series.
There are other worlds than these.
