Can Dizzy be considered an rpg? If not then my first rpg was Pokemon Leaf Green, although it was my little brother's game. After that it was FFIX, and after that skyrim. I'm a bit of an rpg noob really, I was mostly into quake and unreal etc.

Escape Velocity, I think. Deus Ex was the first game I played that was self-identified as one, though. I completely forgot I played Fallout on a Mac before Deus Ex. Just the demo, so it was locked to one character, and there wasn't enough experience in the zone to level up, but still, that was the first RPG I played.

Next thing you know, you're being accosted by a woodelf who swears that, "no, seriously," she's a Khajiit, in Sentinel, and some Imperial at the cooking station is making snide comments.

To be serious, that would be Dungeons and Dragons, pencil and paper in the 3rd grade. I still remember pouring through the Monster Manual, Player's Handbook, and Dungeon Master's Guide.

What about the stacks of maps from people learning cartography? Sometimes they covered an entire city.

Can't remember which was first one that caught my attention but I remember it was a mix of text based games along with simple graphics - Sierra had a out a number of brands and I remember this weird open world game called Arena. Also at some point Fallout came along. The days when you had to draw your own maps and things called guides did not exist (and when actually got a nice book to explain the game).

Overtime it seems that the stories have shrunk but the entertainment has grown. Fun thing is to look at some of the games a decade later and realise that things have changed.

    I honestly can't remember

It was either Final Fantasy 6, Pokemon Blue or Diablo but my memory is fuzzy on the exact order but I leaning towards Diablo. I still remember, little 6-7 year old me on my Step Dad's computer (Diablo was his game), playing it with the Mage character (I always loved magic characters in video games, even back then) getting to the 2nd floor of the Cathedral, seeing that room full of bodies, opening the door and hearing "Awww, Fresh Meat" as the Butcher came out and slaughtered me.

    Scarred for life.

Final Fantasy III (aka FF 6) SNES.

What a ruined franchise FF has become. You didn't get better story and characters than classic FF games. Now FF characters are anime emo teens trying to save the planet from weird convoluted enemy all the while maintaining their dragon ball z hairstyles.

    Maxis The Sims of course!

In my opinion, it was the only really true RPG - where one could also RP within the RPG. Such a pity that Sims 4 was a step backwards in the development and progression of this series.

Just think what ZOS could do with housing using a similar principle.

Ultima 3. I remember having a pirated copy for a few months before I actually played the game. Once I tried it, I was blown away. Also played through 4 and then the first two. I never finished Ultima 5. Played Bard's Tale after that. I think the next RPG I played after that was BG2 or Planescape Torment. After those, there is a big gap until Oblivion.

I don't know if Moria and Telengard count. I probably played Ultima 3 before Telengard, but it is hard to remember. I played Moria around 89-90.

^^ this for me too. 2nd Ed, played every Sunday with school friends in the local church, after the service. The DM was the Pastor's son

The first computer game rpg for me was King's Quest, on the Apple.
