Rattlecage - Heavy?

Only had a quick search but am I correct in saying the Rattlecage set only comes in Heavy Armour?

Is that not a bit odd considering its primarily a magic users set, this they will be running Light?

Soulshine, Dragonguard, Ice Furnace--there's a fair few heavy armor dropsets that benefit magicka users.

I get that @Silver_Strider I guess I see Heavy & a Stamina / Melee build more alligned, Heavy and Magika are polar opposites, its just weird!!

I mean there are plenty of ways to get major sorc anyway, just be nice to not have to buff cycle and free up a slot on the buff bar but running heavy is too much of a compromise.

I guess @Typhoios, good point on Jewellery. Does wipe out Willpower / another though. Maybe they think it would've been OP to offer it in Light. Lol at that, an OP sorc is rare these days tho lol.

I'm actually anti mettle, I think the gain from 7 LA passives outweigh's that extra 4%, however 6:1 at a push may work. I'll set about getting the Jewellery first, and a Sharp Inferno, then worry about it I guess! Ha.

Unlike medium, there is very little benefit to running 7 light over 5, a little bit more regen and cost reduction that are greatly outweighed by the damage from 4% more mana. You can obtain arcane rings for this set if you get the special named rings, Gem of Curses is what its called I think, but afaik you can only obtain a healthy neck.

Rattle cage is basically a PvP set that will have little to no use in PvE, so if you are primarily a PvE player which it sounds like you are, the usefulness of this set will probably not stand out to you. This is a fantastic set for a magicka DK or templar in PvP.

The neck is available in Arcane too.

"Forbidden Jewels" and "Gem of Curses" Add in a Rattlecage staff, and it'll be possible to do 5/1/1 with all-arcane jewelry. Still a lackluster set, though.

Good to know! I hadn't seen that neck before. I wouldn't call it lackluster, it may be trash for PvE but for PvP it is a great set to have.

If heavy armor was a viable option in PVE then maybe it'd be a great set. As such, the few people I see this being used by is magicka tanks like myself and Saptanks and the like.

Does it have to be useful in PvE to be a good set? As a PvP'r I think its a great set.

I wouldn't use it for a saptank--at least not the full set. The 5p bonus is wasted because you'll have Major Sorcery up almost all the time thanks to Sap. Even on single-target boss fights, as a tank, you'll almost always be in Sap range and one Sap will last you a good long time.

It is however the set is not designed to be competitive anyways. In any situation where people aren't bad, this set is useless:
    • Your group tank should provide the team with 100% igneous uptime anyways.
    • Your potion can provide you with major sorcery anyways.
    • Giving up 200 spell damage to Julianos or another equivalent set is just not worth it either.

Templars have to slot a Mage Guild skill if they want major sorcery (and the animation for that skill is soooooooo lame and silly). I'm quite looking forward to this set. DKs could use it to if they choose to be selfish with the molten buffs.

People forget that saving a slot is a major boon.

It's five piece, including jewelry. You can run this with Kagernacs/ Julianos 5 piece and a monster set, too. It's hardly useless, unless your a crit stacking clothie. It's actually going to be a game-changer for heavy armor magika players.

rattlecage is a boss set...so's dreugh king slayer...

it's not just that they give you major sorcery or major brutality - their 2-4 piece bonuses (5th also for rattlecage) also add some decent damage...

I messed around with it in PvP but ended up going with light armor mainly (spinner) for the spell penetration.

I run 5 Light 2 Heavy on all my casters. Even if I have Undaunted Mettle. Heavy Chest and Legs really helps with the squishyness. Or you really want the look, you can go Heavy Legs and Head and hide the head. So, Rattlecage is perfect for that. Just round it out with Jewelry.

I use Storm Knight on my Orc Caster, that comes in Heavy, but I go 2 armors and 3 jewelry.

Rattlecage is a good necropost set, too.

Though, if I want to stay on topic, I'm on the same page with those who do jewelry/weapons. My magicka Templar runs Julianos for armor, Rattlecage jewelry, dual-wield Omen's Edge (Rattlecage blades with Sharpened), and a Rattlecage helm for when I switch to the same-set staff so I don't lose the Major Sorcery bonus. Molag Kena shoulder.

It's kind of a lazy way to get 100% uptime on that buff, but it works for me
