I feel like when you start out the game is a way easier version of Skyrim. Then when you start doing dungeons and getting curious about PVP you kind of mold your character into what everyone else mostly does. Almost everyone who plays the game has an Attack bar and a buff/defensive bar.

Plenty of skyshards and quests which reward player with a skill point.

You are gimp ing yourself, on purpose, extremely. Nobody would choose to run a dungeon with someone only using 1/2 of what they are given.

You lack skill points and probably game experience If you've yet to hit the champion point grind.

By all means play how you want but know you are ruining others experience if you group up.

As I said, I play PVE, but noted....

When did I say anything about pvp? ...............
I think he means he plays solo. He didn't mention any group content in the OP. A single bar might actually be enough for a quester.

Correct, thanks for the correction. Bottom line is, being a single full time father and work, I have maybe a few hours a week to play, and I have spent it playing and having fun over learning game mechanics. That is why I dont do group content, I know I am a hindrance on others with my lack of knowledge and simply want to spent those precious few hours having fun on my own :)

what platform/server are you on? if Xbox EU let me know i will happily run some normal dungeos with you, if only for the skill points you will earn ;)

Appreciate the offer, but I am on PS4 NA, but just goes to show what a good community this is, so thank you. Honestly I dont mind, I remember a good year ago, there was a thread about a guy who stood in the red circles and got ripped on pretty good (all in good fun), yeah I am like that guy! and I am cool with that as I still have fun which is what is important to me and dont sweat it. I am pretty chill person, so the drama of group content I try to avoid as I know my build is not good and hate to be a hindrance on someone else, I hate pissing matches over a game, but to some the competition and challenge is the fun, so I get it. I will slot in some new weapons tonight when home, see how it goes :) This thread has been very helpful to me, so thank you all for the contributions.

Wow how freaking rude. The variety of gamers this game reaches is actually really cool, it offers enjoyment for PvP focused gamers, loyal TES lore followers, people who play mmorpg's, even console gamers looking for fresh content. Snarkily talking down to someone who is different than you is not a problem with him, but with you.

For my main, I use sword and board on both bars. I gear one bar toward buffs and AOE and one as single target damage. I made the switch weapon button a button on my mouse for easier switching. I gaming mouse makes it a good bit easier. Mine isn't terribly complicated. It has just a few extra buttons.

when you get to end-game content (vet dungeons, PvP, trials, Craglorn, etc) you will be gimping yourself by not having another set of skills. Even if you just do attack skills on one bar and buffs on the other, it is a huge disadvantage to not use the second bar. Why would you not use it? If all you do is silver, gold and some dailies, on the other hand, no you probably would not need the back bar

I have 3 characters all leveled between 44-50, I leave the secondary weapon slot empty and never use it, as I wanted to save my skill points to put into crafting, provisioning, enchanting, alchemy etc. I am now pretty much maxed on the skill lines on those and have skill points left over and building up from quests unused, but I do not currently have any need to use a second weapon, the game seems pretty easy with just the one and don't have any problems at current level on any world bosses, quests, etc.... Am I at a disadvantage for silver/gold/Craglorn by doing this? Or is the second weapon slot not really needed and more to give a player variety? I have only done PVE to this point. I am just wondering if I should start leveling a new weapon type on my characters for later levels now, or if its unnecessary and just stick to what I know and have been happy with?

Level a secondary weapon bro it helps a lot! and theres 326 Skill points you can have enough to have just about every thing you need in one character. Just go out and farm skill points!!

Play on PC/NA? If you have time Monday evenings, my guild runs dungeons. We treat them as learning experiences and don't care if we wipe a few times doing them, as long as people have fun and can learn some things.

If your on the PC/NA, hit me up in game and I can get you in the guild.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

On my main stamblade, I went through the entire level 1-50 with bow only (though I leveled other skills), but as soon as I started silver, I had to switch to dual wield because bow got nerfed, and by the time I was in gold, I needed to run two bars at all times, dual wield and two handed. most content was doable with one bar, but it is much easier with two, and anything that requires a group, or soloing gold and silver public dungeons, you will need two for sure.

It depends on if you plan to do more difficult content, and what you plan on doing solo vs groups.

For example, if you do trials you will definitely need two bars, and even maybe swap out a third weapon / skill set for a particular boss.

Also if you plan to solo public dungeons or Dolmens above your level you will probably need a "buff" bar to increase your damage output and improve your sustain. It really sucks to have that last boss down to 10% health and realize you are out of resources and you still have 20 seconds left on your potion cooldown.

So to answer your question yes, you will be at a disadvantage if you don't know how to weapon swap and use a back bar / secondary weapon.

But, if you just stick to the easy stuff solo and then group for the harder stuff - yes, you can survive with one bar.

But even then you might want a "utility bar" to increase your speed travelling between content, or to evade guards when you have a bounty but still want to do something in town, or other purposes.

In PVE, most people run their main bar as a single target bar and their back bar as an AoE/Buff/DOT bar. Some obviously AOE from their front bar too. In any event, buffs are what make you powerful and DoTs give a lot of extra damage. You are really gimping yourself sticking to one bar, but for solo content (not including VMA) you can certainly get by without it.

appreciate the replies, I chose a few various recommended skill lines last night which compliment my character to simply level them up at this point on my back bar when I hand in quests. I figure this way at least I have a wide variety of skills leveled up and I can respec anytime when I understand the mechanics better if need be and if I choose to do group or veteran content in the future. Thanks also for the offers on the guild and group invites, but I am on PS4 NA

Yes, you are the only one using only 1 weapon.

For your information I haven't done any DLC beside Imperial City, so I lack a lot of skillpoints on my main character - I still have enough skillpoints to use for 3 weapon skill lines + most skillpoints in armor benefits, class skills, guild skills, crafting skills etc.
...whenever I am short of skillpoints, I just go and do a full respec ...costs me around 16k (each skill cost 50g to respec, so the more skillpoints you use the more expensive the respec gets).

Btw. the main reason need to have weapon swap is, that at endgame/group content the main damage skills do very little damage on their own, so you have to slot Damage Over Time skills or other skills that buff those damage skills you use along with utility skills, to increase your damage and survival in fights.

For instance I play a templar mag DD, this is typically what I slot on the bar I use for bosses:
    • ultimate: Shooting Star (increase my max magicka)
    • inner light (increase my max magicka + crit chance)
    • structured entrophy (increase my max magicka + health)
    • puncturing sweep (increase crit damage)
    • dark flare (deals damage)
    • radiant glory (deals damage)

no room left, so I use my second bar for Area of Effect skills:
    • ultimate: Shooting Star (increases my max magicka)
    • inner light (increases my max magicka + crit chance)
    • structured entrophy (increases my max magicka + health)
    • blazing spear (increases my crit damage + deals damage over time)
    • proximity detonation (deals damage)
    • channeled focus (increases my magicka regen + resistance)

You can get a bajillion skill points from PvE content alone, so I highly recommend you start using a second weapon and second bar. I have all my crafting maxed, every single profession, but I still have enough skill points left over for multiple weapons and armors with full passives. It just depends on what you want to do with them.

The other thing you can try is put the same weapon on both bars, and maybe only have a few things different. Like for lowbies I use Soul Trap as a DoT 'cause it can target multiple peeps.

Or use a weapon that looks cool (like the skull headed staff you can find in some alchemy places, but can't get a motif for so it's never part of a set).

Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. For questing, I just use 1 bar so I can level up all my skills really quickly from mobs + quests.

But outside of questing, 2 (or 3 as a Sorc) is a must.
