Am I the only one who does not use a second weapon slot? Will I be at a great disadvantage later?

I have 3 characters all leveled between 44-50, I leave the secondary weapon slot empty and never use it, as I wanted to save my skill points to put into crafting, provisioning, enchanting, alchemy etc. I am now pretty much maxed on the skill lines on those and have skill points left over and building up from quests unused, but I do not currently have any need to use a second weapon, the game seems pretty easy with just the one and don't have any problems at current level on any world bosses, quests, etc.... Am I at a disadvantage for silver/gold/Craglorn by doing this? Or is the second weapon slot not really needed and more to give a player variety? I have only done PVE to this point. I am just wondering if I should start leveling a new weapon type on my characters for later levels now, or if its unnecessary and just stick to what I know and have been happy with?

It's a massive disvantage. I have tons of problems in weapon swap (my end, bad latency) so I try to keep all important skills in one bar, however there is no possible way to do end game pve or pvp smoothly without swapping at least once. Basically you want a second weapon bar to be able to have more skill slots (for instance I use sword and board on both bars). As for skill points, just do all you can in game and you will end with more than you need, plenty to max two or even three weapon lines.

Plenty of skyshards and quests which reward player with a skill point.

You are gimp ing yourself, on purpose, extremely. Nobody would choose to run a dungeon with someone only using 1/2 of what they are given.

You lack skill points and probably game experience If you've yet to hit the champion point grind.

By all means play how you want but know you are ruining others experience if you group up.

appreciate the response, I like the idea of using the same sort of weapon and not having to level it from scratch and opening up more skills. I was simply worried I would not have the skill points in the beginning that I needed, but now realize after getting all the skyshards that was a gross overestimation, but I kind of had the feeling I would regret it later on once I started getting into the more difficult content. Good to know.

I'd start using your second bar asap. You may not need the 2nd bar now but, later on in the game it will be essential and I'd hate for you to have to deal with that when you make it to harder content.

If you're stamina based you can't really go wrong with a bow on your back bar.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the game's solo-player content such as quests, world bosses and dolmens (yes, dolmens as they are can be soloed quite easily) do little to prepare you for group content like pledges and trials. I suppose it is possible to run the Silver and Gold pledges without needing to swap bars, but you would ultimately not be fulfilling your role to the best of its ability. If you ever choose to run trials, you would definitely not be able to get away with not swapping bars. As a DD your back bar should be filled with DoTs and buffs, while your front is the main source of your damage (to put it simply). Such is the same for Healers and Tanks-- both bars filled with self/group buffs and other necessary skills that will allow your group to complete the content as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Anyway, the TL;DR is: Yes, level another weapon type!

On most characters I only use one weapon bar as well, so you're not the only one :)

That said, I assume for any endgame content (vet dungeons, normal/vet trials) a second bar is a must. As I'm not interested in doing any of that, I get away with using only one bar. For normal overland content one bar is sufficient.

appreciate it guys and gals, I will slot some different stuff in, would a sword and shield be a viable option for a stamina based 2H so I can swap to a more tank based setup with some gear change? And perhaps do a 2H on my bow user, and restoration on my magica based character? I wanted to try a variety, so trying to spread it out a bit. I am a long time player, but never got much into the actual understanding of the game mechanics, more just pick it up and play from time to time and have fun, so to put it bluntly pretty clueless with good setups, I have yet to do any group stuff as I dont want to be the broken cog haha.

I have 4 of the crafting professions maxed out and still have plenty of skill points for weapon swap. With only having 12 skills to use combined, your really hindering yourself with only using 6.

I have Destro's on both my bars for my Casters. One is a AoE set up, one is Single Target DPS. Or one is Shields and Buffs, one is Attack.

However, if nothing else, you should have at least some Restoration Staff skills going, as you can always play the Healer Role if needed. Or, a Ranged weapon to compliment your up close weapon, or vice versa. Although a Staff can be both ranged and up close.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

As you level up to 50 and through the silver and gold zones take the opportunity to level every weapon line you can. For a stamina build level all 4 stamina weapons and as many of the skills therein as possible. You will be very happy with the flexibility you have at max level.

When leveling I usually keep my main weapon on my front bar and fill my back bar with a weapon and skills I'm leveling. Swap to your back bar before turning in quests and those skill lines will level up super fast.

If nothing else, just make your 2nd bar a "leveling bar". Put something from skill lines you're not using on it. Like Mages Guild, or Bow, etc. Switch to that bar when turning in quests.

When you get to 50, those skills will already be at 35 (for weapons), and you'll be able to finish them up much easier.

At the end of the day the most important thing is that you're having fun playing a build that you enjoy, but you should know that some setups will simply result in gimping your group. For example, if you are playing as a Stamina DD in a 4-man dungeon, you would not want to run sword and board on the back bar as you are limiting your own damage potential by choosing gear that is not designed to output as much damage as, say, bow on the back bar would. Same goes for Magicka DD. You will not have as much success with a Destro/Resto setup (unless your healer's slackin'! :P ) as you would with a Destro/Destro or Destro/Dual-Wield.

I recommend taking time to read over the passives for each weapon type and for each skill line as they will clue you in to how best to utilize the weapons and skills you are using.

When leveling, my bow wasn't very effective from a DPS standpoint. Now, with CP, better gear, and better skills, it's far & away my highest DPS.

Correct, thanks for the correction. Bottom line is, being a single full time father and work, I have maybe a few hours a week to play, and I have spent it playing and having fun over learning game mechanics. That is why I dont do group content, I know I am a hindrance on others with my lack of knowledge and simply want to spent those precious few hours having fun on my own :)

resto staff on a magic user is useful once the skill has levelled you will unlock a ward, morph it to healing ward, it will save your life A LOT when you come to gold areas, dungeons & PvP

destro staff has access to defuffs, DoT's and a burst spammable skill, but depending on your class & play style you may have access to better skills

Dual weilding is a good option especially for for PvE, axes & daggers are particularly good on stamina characters maces can be useful it really depends on your playstyle/class, swords are a vialble option on stam & depending on your class/play style gear set up can work well for magic builds

sword & shield does add additional survivability in both PvE & PvP or off tanking in dungeons (sword & shield work for stam & Mag builds)

you mention bow & 2H so i assume you know all about them

Yes, one bar is fully sufficient for solo questing in world content. Sure, it's limited but let's face it... world content is easy enough. Group content is a different beast entirely...

Still, there is no reason not to use the second bar. Worst case scenario, you'll just never swap and it will be exactly like before - except you'll have the option to swap if at some point you decide it's necessary. There are enough skill points to support several different types of weapons, but you can even use the same type on both bars if you prefer: have a healing and offensive bar, for example, or a ranged and melee bar.
