Crafting Surveys will drop EVERYWHERE?!

This is a scary change. I do writs on 8 characters every day and I save up surveys for "Survey Saturday" when I do one character's complete survey route in one day. Now I will be spending lots of time finding random surveys and not playing the game. That's unfortunate.

I've been thinking of a possible workaround that would be beneficial. I have come up with a couple ideas; obviously I'm not a programmer so I have no idea how easy/complicated it would be to put these in:

1. Allow surveys to stack. Often times I am collecting 15-20 of the same survey and they take up tons of room
2. Allow players to pick up surveys anywhere; for instance, it could drop Wood Survey 2 and you could pick up that Wood Survey wherever you want. That is, assuming that each place has each survey. I don't know if some of the starter islands drop surveys, and if they did, they might not have enough space for all 15 surveys.
3. Allow players to pick up multiple surveys simultaneously. I wouldn't mind so much if I did not have to collect a survey, run away for 7 seconds, re-equip survey, run back and then harvest, and then repeat.

I'm not sure if the solution to this would be incorporated into fixing the problem that master crafters will not be able to pick up all mats, but perhaps, one problem would fix the other. For instance, what if picking up a survey in your home areas would give you iron, and silver areas a different metal and etc. That way players could grab a stack of iron if they needed to, or a stack of voidstone.

I worry that if a change does not happen, writs will be done much less frequently. As it is now, many times I lose money on writs. If I have to spend approximately 50 silk to make items, that costs me about 3-4k (as it is about 12 - 16k per stack). Sometimes when I turn it in, I get 600 gold, a 300 gold ornate drop and an almost meaningless gemstone. That's a net loss of 2-3k for those surveys. It's a gamble I take (most of us take) because we could get a survey (which would replace the mat that I used, and give me a chance at a gold upgrade material) or we get a gold upgrade material from the reward as well.

Additionally, it should make sense that something needs to be done about tempering alloy prices. They should drop more often, as the focus really goes to helping tanks out. ZOS seems like they are really trying to help out the tanks (correct me if I'm wrong) and this would be beneficial. I also believe that the number of gold mats to upgrade something should increase or the number you get for breaking one down should increase. Many of my guild mates are going broke buying flowers for potions and have no money to upgrade their endgame sets.

Just my two cents, hopefully it was a constructive read.

ATM writs can be taken in any Alliance area - Craglorn and Coldharbour are instanced by alliance as well - but turned just in the respective zone:
Tier 1 in Alliance Zone 1
Tier 2 in Alliance Zone 2
Tier 3 in Alliance Zone 3
Tier 4 in Alliance Zone 4
Tier 5 in Alliance Zone 5
    Tier 6 in Coldharbour
    Tier 7, 8 & 9 in Craglorn
Tier 10 in Wrothgar - currently inaccessible to players without ESO+ subscription or who have bought Orsinium DLC, who receive maximum tier 9 writs in Craglorn even if they are 10/10 in the respective craft.

From what I understood in One Tamriel you can pick a writ in any zone, including those from other alliances but only turn it to the point in that area, and receive surveys in the same area. For example you get a a blacksmith writ in Auridon, craft the specified items then turn it in in Auridon and have a chance to receive Auridon survey report which is now leveled to your crafting level.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Not quite...

You're right that you can pick them up where you want. Turning in is still the same as it was before.

Top tier writs for instance must be turned in in Wrothgar...

The surveys that drop can take you everywhere though... I did 2 top tier writs, turned them in in wrothgar, and received 2 surveys, 1 in Stormhaven and 1 in Craglorn.

So the surveys can send you everywhere...

Uhm .. just saying, but your post has some large fallacies regarding writ rewards that keep getting repeated over and over.

It has been proven beyond doubt in the crafters part of these forums that writs are profitable by a large margin, that's fact.
You may use mats worth ~ 3.5k per writ, and you get gold tempers 1 time out of every 3.
Meaning when you use silks worth 10.5k you get 1 wax worth 8.5k, plus 2k in gold, plus 3 ornate or intricate items, plus possible glass parts, plus surveys that yield even more mats and possible tempers.

Profit for blacksmithing is even larger, since ingots are cheaper and alloys are more expensive.

I'm not too happy about surveys all over the world either, but it's not the end of crafting writs. Writs are still the best possible source of gold tempers in the game, and doing them is always profitable, without a shade of doubt.

But hey, maybe you'll decide to do them on 1 or 2 of your characters a day instead of all 8, that's not a catastrophe though.

I agree that the writs could use some changes and updates, I made my own suggestions here, but I just wanted to clear out the misunderstading that doing writs is somehow a net loss, it isn't, not by far.

@Asardes I'm sorry I can't recall where, but I read that it was asked at Pax about the whole "no Orsinium DLC for writs" thing and Craglorn would offer top tier writs if folks didn't own Orsinium.

I've seen somewhere that you will be able to turn in the top tier surveys in Craglorn after it comes to live if you don't have access to Wrothgar. But that can't be tested in PTS because DLCs are unlocked for everybody.

So in the end you can in deed pick them up everywhere - because there's no Silver and Gold areas anymore. But if I'm EP and I have crafting tier 5 am I prompted to turn in the writ only in The Rift, or I get the choice of turning in in The Rift, Reaper's March and Bankgorai - all Tier 5 areas - and get the survey for the zone I've picked?

This makes things a bit more interesting and sends people exploring the world. In deed it will be bad for people with specialized crafters that expect to camp them in a zone to quickly collect the surveys in the same zone. Now I understand the anger. Another question is if the surveys are leveled as they are now, when they are generated, or if they are generated in a dynamic way. For example if my tier 10 blacksmith character gets a survey in Stormhaven and it gets collected by my tier 5 blacksmith who runs errands will I get rubedite or ebony?

Now I will be spending lots of time finding random surveys and not playing the game. That's unfortunate.

This is my fear as well. I don't get much time to play as I'd like. Something I try to keep up with is the crafting dailies, research, and horse training. For me, PvP and dungeons have to wait till the weekends.

I stockpile my survey "crates" (you can only have 1 of each in your inventory or bank, because they are "unique") until I am carrying too much or am ready to complete a zone. Then I run to the survey location, harvest, run away, read the survey again, reharvest until complete.

If the surveys are spread all over One Tamriel, the "return on investment" of multiple load screens, googling, and effort just won't be worth it per survey.

    Suggestions include:
    • Make surveys non unique. This way they can be traded, sold, moved out of containers if a character has multiple, banked until such a time as we are ready to collect.
    • Keep surveys tied to the zone where we turned in the writ. This makes most sense to me, and most naturally accomadates the story/leveling progression characters follow. Also, I love this feature about Craglorn, but there will be no point to especially completing writs there if surveys will take me somewhere else.
    • Get rid of surveys altogether. Rather, increase the rewards for writs directly. What is a survey but a time sink and RNG for crafting mats and tempers? Why not just give crafters that reward up front?
    • Increase the rewards of surveys because of the increased effort to collect.
Men are but flesh and blood. They know their doom, but not the hour.

My main complaint about this is having to find all these survey locations. Right now, I know the 15 possible survey locations by memory. "Orsinium Alchemy Survey II? Way up north, on the road toward to Sorrow." And so on. But with 3 survey locations per zone and 5 professions that give writs and, I think, 18 zones that can have surveys, that is 270 possible survey locations! I am never going to be able to remember them. Which means most surveys are going to be me trying to read a tattered map and wandering in circles for 20 minutes. The hunt is kind of fun the first few times. But when there are only 15, you get to know them and do not need to find them fresh each time. But with 270, trying to decipher an unfamiliar map every day is going to get old fast.

I mostly agree, with a single notable exception:
[*] Get rid of surveys altogether. Rather, increase the rewards for writs directly. What is a survey but a time sink and RNG for crafting mats and tempers? Why not just give crafters that reward up front?

Of course, getting rid of Craglorn surveys is not that desirable. As I said before, the best option IMO is:
[*]Keep surveys tied to the zone where we turned in the writ. This makes most sense to me, and most naturally accomadates the story/leveling progression characters follow. Also, I love this feature about Craglorn, but there will be no point to especially completing writs there if surveys will take me somewhere else./quote]
