I believe you are way overestimating the level of sportsmanship outside of videogames.

For every Nikki Hamblin in the Olympics, there are dozens of dopers, rule-benders, churlish egotists, childish rants, and flat out violence that have Pierre de Coubertin rolling in his grave.

This doesn't mean it's OK to be a jerk. Rather, it means if you comes across what you perceive of as a jerk in Cyrodiil, it's not because sportsmanship isn't relevant in videogame, rather because it is an observable phenomenon when it comes to competition.

And even then it's going to be difficult to find agreement of what is "sporting." I'm wearing legal gear that ZoS has said was WAI or am using a legal attack combination without the use of macros that Jane Doe thinks is "exploiting"? Hmm, I'd argue Jane Doe is the one that has an issue with poor sportsmanship, not me. Also good sportmanship does not entail allowing a solo player free license to disrupt alliance supply lines. These players are situating themselves in areas with enemy traffic for the expressed purpose of killing your alliance-mates and just because they start running away, sportsmanship does not dictate that I then need to let them go. That's the problem, there are grey areas whereupon what constitutes sportsmanship is entirely ambiguous and in the eye of the beholder.

In general 90% of the time, I do not find it constructive to make an public issue at something which people perceive as poor sportsmanship. How many threads have come on these forums about people complains that one faction nightcaps, zergs

I have to strongly disagree here. No one likes to lose, but high competition != poor sportsmanship. Some sports may exhibit more displays of poor sportsmanship from competitors than others, but I do think it just comes down to whether or not the competitor is a raging jerk or not. Add in the anonymity of online gaming, and I would say it is easily more toxic in mmos as few are worried about any sort of issues arising from their actions.

I played sport at a semi professional level for a few years. Trust me, this is a cake walk in comparison.

I am currently in that world...Except it's at the professional level-world championships, Olympic trials, etc. Perhaps you're talking about a more "showy" sport (awful word choice here probably) like American football or baseball? I suppose I could see those having a bit more drama as some players get such insane salaries.

Regardless, I stand by what I said-people being jerks/insecure/ragers, that's where unsportsmanlike behaviour comes from. In professional sports, you can lose sponsorships by acting inappropriately. In eso, what happens? Nothing. So the toxicity runs rampant.

Chess is about the least "showy" sport and I have seen grandmasters throw the pieces on the ground in anger.

Poor sportsmanship isn't some new phenomenon brought about by egotistic Americans in high profile sports looking to market themselves for a huge paycheck. And I wouldn't cite the Olympics as a venue for good sportsmanship. For every Nikki Hamblin there a dozens of cheaters, jerks, and criminals

In professional sports, one might lose a sponsorship for acting "inappropriately," but that is all about marketing and nothing about the actual sport or competition. You can't compare that to ESO because McDonalds isn't looking for any of us to sell BiG Macs anytime soon.
Make Rush of Agony "Monsters only." People should not be consecutively crowd controlled in a PvP setting. Period.

I'm not quite sure you understood what I was getting at. Any sort of competition brings in different types of people-cheaters, a**holes, kind hearted people, etc. I was specifically stating that I don't see any more toxicity in real life comparing track (where my experience is) to eso pvp. And the olympics wasn't stated as a place of "omg such pure athletes that are so great and never cheat or are mean" lol. The number of dopers in track is disgusting.

Additionally, I think the anonymity of anything online can push unsportsmanlike conduct to a more disturbing level...I have never heard track competitors say go die, your house should burn with your family inside, I'm going to come kill you filthy b**** whereas in eso these are things I have heard (I'm a ganker). Are any of these comments truthful/meant deep down/to be taken seriously? No, probably not, but they are still said, and nothing is going to change or stop people from saying that stuff.

In real life though, even if people want to say it, they aren't going to if they want to get paid and stay on the team. Losing your sponsorship in some sports is actually a huge deal...most track elites aren't like nfl stars with high paying contracts. It can be a struggle for some getting enough to be able to actually compete; in fact I don't know of a single person here that doesn't also work at least a part time/seasonal job while training.

I've done the opposite, after wandering in IC with a fine team and then having someone totally wipe us, I've sent them a 'wow that was skillfully done' notes. Sometimes it's the start of a pleasant exchange or they mention something I can learn from.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow gamer is either a fool or a coward, whoever cannot take care of themselves without that law is both. For a wounded gamer shall say to his assailant if I live I will kill u, if I die u r forgiven, such is the code of gamer.

Sportsmanship in this game can come back to bite you too because so few have it.

Last night I was xp farming in IC on my low level DC toon. Yes I expect to be killed when doing so but what I encountered was first very bad sportsmanship from an AD player who saw my level knew I was XP farming, and came bac to the same area to kill me over and over before I finally gave up and switched zones.

It was in the new zone where showing good sportsmanship came back to bite me. I came across an EP player who was also solo and around the same level as me. His HP was at about 50% from the NPC's he had just fought so I just waved and moved to the next group of NPCs instead of taking advantage of his weakened state. My showing mercy and good sportsmanship by no killing him in an uneven fight got me him coming back with 2 of his high level buddies to kill me about 4 minutes later.

I will still stick to my code and try to let PvE people go but it does get old when your doing PVE and getting griefed over and over or a fellow PVE person you are nice to sets you up.

CE is beyond low but I will not get into a rant about how much I cannot stand any who would use that.

To an extent absolutely, for example just yesterday in Scourge on Xbox NA some (expletive) took our blue Scroll from AD at Brindle (don't know why it was at Brindle in the first place but that's beside the point) and proceeded to try and farm it instead of bringing it back to the Temple, resulting in AD very predictably taking it back and putting it at Bloodmayne. That was unsportsmanlike and absolutely a *** move plain and simple, and everyone in my group reported him accordingly. Most of us are playing to win, and any time someone selfishly sabotages our efforts like that it defeats the entire purpose of us playing at all. So yes to an extent people have to play according to set rules for them to be playing right, otherwise you're ruining the fun of hundreds of players who will have a harder time of winning (or just not win at all) thanks to a handful of bad apples.

People signing onto an alt and taking a scroll to give it to their team, people spying, cheating, intentionally getting in the way of your own team winning, all of these things and anything else along those lines are unsportsmanlike and unacceptable behavior in a video game, and any effort to prevent such behavior and/or punish it is absolutely a good and necessary thing, some people get off on being jerks and they should not be allowed to get away with it and ruin other people's fun with such lame and pathetic tactics. Ganking and whatnot may be cowardly but that's fair play, but the things I've listed go way beyond that and are definitely unacceptable behavior.

Never trust a PvEer. Their lack of experience makes them feel threatened by any enemy while at the same time viewing any kill as an accomplishment. So if there's an actual risk involved for me in letting them live, I never do so.

Edit: Same goes for most pvp players as well, actually. At least they usually charge right into you if they dare, instead of waiting for friends.

In all seriousness it isn't virtual sexual assault. Its crouching over a dead body. It implies sexual actions but it isn't one. As for the /shovel, its my go to emote when i kill someone. I only ever teabag when i see someone get zerged down and i had literally nothing to do with it, purely because i know that people rage so much over that kind of thing.

Just a game, players tend to just be ass hats. If u let it get to u, then you're going have fun. I get t-bagged at least 60 times a day in pvp and guess what I just laugh respawn and do it all over again. Its whatever really, I'm a very humble person and I wont attack unless u attack. Not saying that haven't turned my back and been one shotted by dueche. Or well not having can be humble like me.

Teabaggin is sexual assault, i em gettin triggered
Well, it's virtual sexual assault. So why not just /shovel or /sweep? That's actually a serious question.

No its real sexual assalt. Anyone who does it should be life banned from the game for LIFE. Now would you all kindly stop triggering me.
Trolling ignored - serious question still stands.

If it isn't seen as virtual sexual assault, and merely crouching, why do you think it would elect such rage? For example, why would one be offended by crouch more than /dance?

Because of the implied sexual nature. Its isnt actually sexual.

Teabagging is as real of a sexual assault as me killing your pixels is real murder.

I find it interesting this has turned into a teabagging thread. To me, teabagging isn't sexual (despite it's origins), but rather a display of dominance. It's why some nub who was running behind a zerg who never touched you stopping to teabag looks so pathetic.
For relevance, it is often cited as one of the most common displays of unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Sportsmanship is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one's competitors." Except in some particular cases (namely when the parties know each other and agree with the "fun" of it), tbagging doesn't seem to fit the bill.

With respect to the "sexual" aspect of it, I'll say this - tbagging is more like a virtual "psudo-sexual" act. I mean, there is no disrobing and no virtual *** involved. IRL if you were to repeatedly crouch over the quarterback's face after sacking him, it may be viewed as unsportsmanlike conduct, but I doubt it would be considered sexual assault in any legal sense (and yes, it would probably get him raging!). In-game it's basically that same act, but virtualized. Still a likely unsportsmanlike conduct (again, intent does matter), but unlikely to be reasonably viewed as "virtual sexual assault". Still, it's worth considering that those on the receiving end may be getting a different message than was sent.

So many well thought out defenses for putting virtual genitalia on virtual faces. But the bottom line is, it's the gloating behavior of a child.
    Enjoy.
