    It's not shallow or stupid.

Imagine you want to buy a motorcycle you saw advertised. It's the best looking bike you've ever seen and demand is guaranteed to be high. You go to the shop and instead of being able to buy the motorcycle you instead buy a spin of a roulette wheel which costs about 1/4 what the bike costs (so if the bike is valued at $20,000, a spin is $5,000). There's a .4% chance you'll get the motorcycle, a 50% you'll get free sodas from the vending machine, a 20% chance of getting a voucher for some free riding lessons, 5% chance of getting a free paint job, and 1% chance of winning a guaranteed no down payment, best rate financing on another bike. They don't add up to 100% because the roulette wheel is digital and they don't disclose the actual chances.

What would you do? Spin the wheel until you get that bike or say screw them?

You can say the same thing with clothes. Imagine wanting to buy a new shirt or suit or dress or whatever, and the shop doesn't sell the clothes directly but instead sells a roulette wheel spin that has an extremely low chance of giving you the clothes you want and a much greater chance at giving you free drinks from the vending machine or some other crap you don't want.

Just sell us the items directly in the cash shop and don't make us gamble for them ZOS, or I promise you you'll feel the backlash as people quit and spread negative word-of-mouth.

Your analogies are not remotely comparable. You're comparing the main purchase on the one hand with a trivial extra on the other hand.

Let's just take the motorcycle. A better analogy is that you've bought a motorcycle and go into the shop some time later. There are some fancy stick-on stripes that you can put on the bike. They're completely unnecessary and purely cosmetic, they don't affect the motorcycle's performance or your enjoyment of the ride one iota, but they look neat. They used to be available to buy on a limited time offer, but you bought the motorcycle too late to get them. The shopkeeper tells you not to worry, they're now going to be available again on a random chance basis if you buy their in-store lottery ticket. It's entirely your choice whether to buy a ticket or not, and you may or may not consider it worth a punt.

The motorcycle is the main item, equivalent to buying the game. The fancy stick-on stripes are the equivalent of a mount or costume in the game, neat but wholly inessential to riding the bike/playing the game. Making out that the main purchase of the motorcycle is equivalent to a non-essential cosmetic or convenience item in the game is absurd.

A lot of it depends upon the odds and implementation. Still too many questions.

How many different items will be in the loot table?
The difference between 100 items and 500 is huge if a specific item is desired

    How will they handle duplicates?
Will they just disappear because you already have one, can we sell them. If RNG spits out a mount you already have, does it default to low-stat garbage crown consumables, or does it re-roll for another mount? Depending on the answer to this question, players with more crown items may have an ever increasing chance of getting nothing but crap

How will the boxes be differentiated?
Will there be one kind of box for costumes and another for mounts? Will there be one box for discontinued items and another for exclusive items? Will there be different tiers offering greater and lesser odds?

At this point, I don't have enough information to decide if I'm going to buy a few here and there after a crown discount sale or give them the ten foot pole treatment.

When you're buying a gambling service there's no promise regarding the actual drop rate. It could change once it hits live, or even minute-to-minute. It's impossible for us to gather any kind of meaningful data about it, and more to the point since it's gambling boxes any meaningful data STILL doesn't let us determine the price of an item, it just lets us know what kind of averages we're playing against. Since it all falls on a standard distribution, it doesn't even matter regarding playing the averages, because we are guaranteeing that if enough people participate, a certain percentage of those people will get literally nothing valuable regardless of how much they play.

You can trade in duplicates for "gems". Then use the gems to buy the item you want, IF it is available in the gem store. Which isn't the same as the crown store. There is also no information on whether it will be a straight up trade [you got a guar you already owned, so you get the amount of gems you need to buy the senche you really wanted], or if you get a certain number of gems that won't get you the item you really wanted. Which might mean you need more dups to trade for more gems, since apparently you can't buy gems, which would mean you need to buy more gambling boxes.

Either they need to release more official information about this as soon as possible, or deal with what seems to be a large number of very disgruntled, disappointed former customers.

    1. One group will obtain all previously removed items. Another in a higher quality (assuming price as well) includes mounts.
    2. Duplicates seems to at a customers response in this system generate a new crown store currency named a crown gem(s)
    3. Quality of contents and opportunity of rewards differentiate these boxes. It suggests there will be at least two or more categories total. Normal, super rare, crown gem, maybe another

It's not a time and effort thing, though, it's a completely random chance based on how much you're willing to gamble. And there's no guarantee that you'd get it regardless of you much you gamble for it. Unless you meant putting in the time and effort at your job to earn the money to purchase the gambling service.

If I conducted a poll among Ford owners about a Ford feature is that bias against Honda owners? This poll is of people who are already willing to buy the box. If you aren't willing to buy a box you aren't in the demographic.

Please feel free to start another poll that asks if you will or will not buy a RNG box.

The hate is backed by prior experience with these mechanics in other titles. If I wanted to play a game with lockboxes, I'd log into STO.

I'm not sure if you are aware of it yet, they are cosmetic only you know? They don't affect the gameplay at all! Like none. It would be a predatory model if they add p2w itens, which is not the case.

Different items effect (affect?) people's enjoyment of a game differently. Personally for me, I would actually hate this idea less if it was VMSA weapons in those lockboxes (no, don't take that out of context, I don't think it's a good idea to ever put weapons etc. in the crown store, just making a point here), as that wouldn't matter at all to me. I don't play competitively, the rare times I PvP it really doesn't matter - that person will kill me with or without a fancy weapon (lol). I thing I DO love about the game is being able to change my outfit to fit the mood, change my mount to match the scenery and mission etc. So for me, I care much more about cosmetic items being locked away behind a lottery box. It doesn't change competitive play, but it does affect how I play the game.

    ^ This.

However, if these exclusive mounts are actually the skeleton ones, I don't really care cause they are ugly and I wouldn't buy them anyway. But I'm really sad that I will never have a chance to get the Frostmare if so-called RNG boxes will be the only way to get the previously released limited time offers. I'm not only angry and sad, I'm extremely disappointed with the direction in which the clown store goes... It frightens me that the people who created the game I love so much, they are now killing it. If these are the same people at all...

Also the Wild Hunt mounts, and the Attronach mounts, probably. Probably other things down the road.

If the price was low enough, and I had the extra crowns, and there was an exclusive I really wanted, then 1. I have a very low reinforcement-extinction schedule tolerance for these sorts of things. Coming back with thousands of TV stones once I decided to try my luck on one of the RNG boxes. Instant regret after I didn't get anything good and I walked away. I had even less (read no) interest in the random boxes for real money at all the vendors at comic con this year.

I'm not concerned about this for myself. I'm concerned for those players with addiction disorders about to be exploited. (See Terrace & Phillip F2P game episode of South Park)

I did not participate in the poll because I don't intend to buy any lootbox. As I said in another topic, the day they put collectibles behind a RNG wall is the day I cease collecting them.

I like the way you phrased your question, though, because it allows to illustrate a notion that is very relevant to this awful gambling: the price of giving up.

You ask how far we were willing to go before giving up. An element of answer is that the further we go, the more expensive it gets to give up.

Let's say they make an awesome mount exclusive to the RNG system and you really want this mount.
If you buy one lootbox, but don't get it and you give up, well, you wasted 400 Crowns. Not a very big deal.
Now let's say you buy 10 lootboxes in hope that one of them would contain it (which will still, probably, remain unlikely), but you don't get your awesome mount. Well, you invested 4000 Crowns in vain - the equivalent of a Sar-m'Athra. Should you give up then? Giving up then would be accepting you wasted the 4000 Crowns for nothing, which is the equivalent of throwing 4000 Crowns into the garbage bin, while continuing would cost only 400 more Crowns, for a chance that the total of 4400 Crowns would not be wasted. At this point, giving up does cost ten times as much as continuing, on a psychological level.

And this is the goal of these lootboxes: getting the players - maybe not all, but due to low likelihood of success, most of them - to the point where the psychological cost of giving up outweighs the actual cost of continuing. This is an infinite money sink, which is addictive by design, intrinsically dishonnest and predatory.

I will not condone that as a fan of Elder Scrolls. TES fans deserve better than that, and TES can, and should, do better.
