Why you shouldn't be excited about One Tamriel

Do any of you remember the atrocious pve lag present with the anniversary do cake? Those game areas were neigh unplayable.

Want to know how One Tameriel will feel? Go into Cyrodiil in a Friday or Saturday night at prime time when all 3 factions are there. High latency (yes 200 ping is high when my ping us 70 in pve)

ZOS has already said large concentrations of players in one area cause lag. So hey it's s glorious idea lets just put everyone together.

You can forget about shopping in reapers March or grabbing pledges in way rest. The player count multiplied by 100 will pretty much make those towns sub 15 fps on elite level hardware.

This just may be the update that kills the game when PVE folks have to deal with the same lag pvp folks have for two years they won't have the patience and will flat out quit.

I would be ok with One Tamriel if their game code could handle it, but the software scales poorly. There answer to lag in pvp is spreading folks out to towns to make keep battles smaller. Large town hubs will be unplayable or crash feasts with single fps for a lot of people.

Let it not be said someone didn't speak up. One Tamriel should be tabled until they can get performance issues sorted. This will be a bigger mess up then the lighting patch was that cost them 300k subs to cancel and quit..no one will pve in the type of lag pvp has put up with in two years....pushing this forward without addressing performance scaling problems just may be the dagger in the heart that finishes this game completely and I don't want that because I still enjoy playing it.

They better think long and hard before considering this.....petformance isn't there yet and this could easily end up being a total disaster of epic proportions they won't ever recover from.

    What makes you think everyone will be together? All One Tamriel does is offer you the chance to play in any area at any time, it doesn't mean that everyone will want to play in just one area at the same time. Besides which, there will be phasing/instancing just as there was in the starting areas when the game first launched.

    This is false. I wish there was a disagree button. They have said there will be many different shards of each zone so players will still be split up evenly across all shards. When you form a group, you will move into a similar shard as your group mates.

    Please do not spread this hysteria of PVE lag.

    Let me break it down for you -_-

    • An "instance" is a version of a zone or area. When you run a group dungeon, your group creates a private instance of the dungeon you just entered,

    • PvE zones only hold X amount of players in an "instance". It is similar to group dungeons.

    • Once that instance is full, a brand new instance (entire copy of any given zone) is created for players to be put in. This stops there from being tons of lag

    The only difference is there will most likely no longer be any zones that are near empty (Cadwell's Solver/Gold) for your alliance.

    *Note: You can also think of it like Campaigns in PvP, except they hold far less players, don't have tons of lag, and you cannot choose your campaign.

    I don't think people are aware that PVE areas are instanced... or perhaps even what that means?

    Something is causing lag, but there will only be "x" number of people in a given PVP area as when that number is exceeded a new instance is generated. Certainly the lag and the loading came with the DB content, but there have been issues with PVP lag from the start of this game on and off.

    It's not a rant just don't be surprised if performance drops when this goes live. Just like game performance dropped from 1.5 to 1.6/Tamriel Unlimited the game ran better in 1.5 from a performance standpoint.

    It has nothing to do with Instancing it had everything to do with every time they make major changes performance suffers for it.

    When they implemented the lighting patch performance took a major nose dive.

    It took another major nose dive with 1.6

    Going on past precedence I have no reason to believe otherwise performance won't be hurt further in fact past indication tells me it most certainly will hurt performance

    Your fears are unfounded. Same hardware, same number of players as before. The mega server spins up new instances of a zone whenever population reaches a cap. Nothing is really changing.

    What about in main city's like way rest and mournhold?
    I already have trouble porting to these cities during peak hours. I have a feeling it might only get worse

    One Tamriel doesn't mean one zone . Devs are working to improve the lag anyway . I would say there will be other bugs to be worrying about when it goes live . Probably a lot of storytelling inconsistency too .

    In all fairness, no, we won't have gold-zone zero-people zero-lag areas anymore, but at worst we are only going to have our current trading-hub lag in a few more zones. You have the same concern many had before launch, OP. "How can a game not have multiple servers and still run well?!? It will be an unplayable lag-fest!" But we know that's not how the mega servers work and we have no reason to think they will change that. X number of players are only instanced into the same area at one time. If more come around, they are sent to a new instance of the same region. Performance will only change if they change X to be larger, not merely by desegregating the alliances.

    The generally amicable yet sporadically salty magplar that may or may not have 1vXed you in Sotha Sil. Who knows?

    I think One Tamriel is one of the most awesome things to come. It's the way it should have been since launch and it's a huge step towards making ESO feel more like an ES game.

    Many people have already clarified about lag or performance fears.

    I can't wait for One Tamriel to go live!

    Gina said in the live show as well, that there will not be much of a performance impact due to phasing - she called those phases channels, but it is the same - PvE zones are different from PvP zones due to this phasing, which is kind of an automated instance creation - whenever a threshold is reached a new phase will be created.

    If my ping was 200 on prime time during the weekend I would be crying tears of joy. 200 ping is my usual ping on PvE zones and 250~300 on Cyrodill.

    To get back on topic: I can just hope that the instancing works and the latency isn't affected by One Tamriel. If the latency rises a bit (20 ms or so), I think it's okay considering that I'll never outlevel content anymore.

    Same, and then I can do the grayed out quests, which choke my quest list currently - and clean up my quest list and then go for a huge sightseeing tour all over Tamriel and stay wherever I like the scenery and quest there, this will be great.

    I have a wait and see attitude about this, not that there's anything we can do about it anyways. I like the concept of removing the walls so all factions can mingle like a real world but I'm wondering how much lag we'll see in the real world (not instanced dungeons etc). I tend to think there will be some kind of impact with a change like this but to what degree who knows. If it's bad I'm guessing the developers will do their best to fix it.

    Ok well we will see I guess but considering I have been here from the start and have seen every major update(Lighting Patch/Craglorn and Tamriel Unlimited) make performance worse each time color me unoptimistic.

    The majority of early access 2014 players are mostly gone and they are gone because performance keeps getting worse.

    Let's hope I'm wrong about One Tamriel but past precedence makes that unlikely. Odds are its a major gaffe.

    In 1.5 my average ping was 65

    When they launched Tamriel unlimited my ping went to 110-120 that's a 100% increase in latency and it took awhile to get used to.

    If the average console player is stuck with 180-220 ping they will flat out quit that is the kinda latency where you weapon swap and have to wait for it to switch folks won't play in those conditions long term.

    We will see but I'm not optimistic considering performance is still not fixed adding more to and making huge changes in how phasing works etc could make it even worse.

    They can rush patches on PC, console players will be jipped though. It is what it is we will see I suppose

    For god sake it's Mega server, there is a cap limit on how many players can be in a Zone, and when it hits more than the cap it will start making another channels. For example let's assume the cap is 1000 (I dont know the numbers, only ZoS knows), and there's 5000 players in Auridon right now, there will be 5 Channels of Auridon each have 1000 players inside. It does not matter if 10k, 100k, 1 million players playing in Auridon, You will only see 1000 players in your channel at max

    Cyrodiil is an exception, it only has 1 instance for each of campaign, and the cap is much bigger than any other zones.

    It's not lag that I have an issue with, it's the idea that we should all be able to run around and do all the zones scaled that bothers me. Having areas harder than some is part of what makes achievement worth it in a game. Having to go back and figure out what to do. By scaling down content and players or scaling up content and players I feel we've cheapened the overall game experience.

    They've always been instanced...

    So they were instanced when the cake came out, and we saw how the starter cities became virtually unusable.

    So they were instanced when they did the "group photo" event, where many people can't even zone into their faction capital zone.

    Sure, instances can help. If they substantially dial down the capacity point at which they split off. But then that negates much of the benefit of One.
