A person's first character in any game is the one they make mistakes on and learn from. Honestly, the main problem with your main is that they're an Altmer. Dunmers do much better as Magicka DKs because of their Flame damage passive (I'd say soon to become a boost to all three elemental skills, but we don't know for sure if the PTS racial changes will all show up in Live), and much better as vampires because of their Fire resistance.

If you happen to have any spare Crowns, you could buy that character a race change to Dunmer (and name change, if necessary) and continue in the DPS role. This would, however, also depend on you owning the Any Alliance, Any Race pack to be able to switch from an Aldmeri Dominion race to an Ebonheart Pact race.

Alternatively, you could respec to a Stamina race. If you're limited to Aldmeri Dominion races, that would mean Khajiit or Bosmer, and switching from vampire to werewolf. Stamina DKs aren't bad for damage dealing, and are awesome for Tanking. Again, you'd have to check the new racial passives once the Patch Notes are up, but I'm fairly sure Khajiit Tanks are going to be a thing from now on.

If you can't afford a race change token, you could create a new character. It means "losing" any Achievements you have on that character, but if you've only been playing a month and a half, you probably don't have too many of the tedious Achievements like the various Monster Hunter and Fishing Achievements.

If you are really attached to your Altmer Magicka DK, then consider a role change to Healer. I have a Nord Magicka DK (terrible combination if you know anything about racial passives) who is amazingly fun to play as a Healer in combination with the Trinimac's Valor set. He has 5 pieces of Trinimac's Valor plus 5 pieces of Kagrenac's Hope plus 1 piece of Molag Kena, with Max Magicka glyphs on everything and specced for the best possible Reduce Magicka Cost and Magicka Recovery that's possible with my Champion Points. I imagine this would work even better on an Altmer who benefit from an increased Magicka pool to begin with.

Or you could say "screw the flavour of the month", and just carry on as an Altmer Magicka DK, like my friend who plays a Khajiit Magicka Sorcerer. Or me, who plays an Imperial Magicka Sorcerer for roleplaying reasons. (That character is an Imperial. End of.) Min-maxing is a thing for those who want to be THE VERY BEST and be able to grind Veteran Maelstrom Arena and do Hard Mode of Veteran Maw of Lorkhaj with 11 other amazing players. If the best you think you'll ever be able to do is the Veteran Dungeons and Normal Trials, then your racial passives are really not that important. Understanding your class and using the best 10 + 2 skills available to you, and putting your Champion Points in the right places, are more important than having the "perfect" race.

Okay, so, simple explanation.

Dragon Knights: Somewhere between tough to kill and practically immortal. DPS isn't fantastic.

Templars: Somewhere between highly durable, and tough to kill. DPS isn't fantastic, but can heal through abuse.

Nightblades: Tissue paper. Can kill a god from stealth with their DPS, and still have time to teleport strike you into a new zip code.

Sorcs: Slightly beefy. Hilarious DPS, but way more AoE and crowd control options.

And you're surprised that your DK isn't going to outperform a class that can increase its spell and weapon damage for every slotted class ability, and can buy a flat cost discount to every ability in the game? Really?

I disagree. In my experience Mist Form gives Magicka Templars and DKs much needed mobility which they don't get from class skills.

Also, as it stands, right now, you can actually turn off vampirism, and werewolves without a slotted ultimate are basically normal characters for endgame content. So it's not like you're getting horrifically punished for either.

This is before you remember that vampires are very competitive in the right builds, and werewolves can be a lot of fun to play.
