I want a Crossbow.
But Crossbows haven't been invented/put into common use yet.
Even though the Fighter's Guild has an ability that fires a Crossbow.
Yet Crossbows were still newish technology down the road in the 4th Era.
And it's only the 2nd.

Dwemer weapons and constructs don't count as the only ones who can explain the tech are long gone and practically none of the other Tamriel races have an understanding themselves. Acquiring a Dwemer Crossbow was actually a Quest in Skyrim's Dawnguard so the weapon's expert lady could study and reverse engineer it.
But when it comes to the rest of Tamriel at large, Crossbows are still pretty much stuck being Siege Weapons. There's even an NPC in Wayrest that says he spent all his Gold investing in a "Handheld Ballista", but it went nowhere cause of how stupid the idea was.

In a world were physical magic is possible, the need for many modern technologies is reduced, thus not researched.
If I have people able to create a steady stream of fire, I do not need to invent a flame thrower.
If I can Throw rocks, accurately, with a gesture, I don't need to invent a pistol.
If I can cast spectral images of myself across a continent, I don't need to invent a telephone.
While a crossbow is superior to a short bow, in some aspects, the trade off in rate of fire is not as useful when I have someone who can hit you with a lightning bolt to get the same armor penetration. I think the Dwemer lacked any "real" magical ability, and the magical event that caused them all to vanish was Daedric in origin....but that is my thoughts, and not based in anything in lore that I can find.
