Console messaging isn't even remotely suitable for chatting with guild mates, others in-game or looking for groups.its good that it can be toggled off don't really wanna see all the spam from the 11 year olds in Mournhold might be cool for PVP tho I mean I'm pretty sure you can send messages on console so was this feature really necessary could have probably gotten a 3rd dungeon instead next month.
I gather that there are a good number of role-players who have been waiting patiently for text chat (me included) and I read that there are quite a few more who don't wish to use headsets and mics for a variety of reasons. Of course text chat won't appeal or have benefits for everyone. But personally, i'm delighted. Area chat was just too 'revealing' for me!disintegr8 wrote: »Not currently needing a keyboard, it would be just as annoying to have one as it would be to use the on screen typing tools so unless there were real benefits I am currently not aware of, I'd prefer not to use it

All consoles (PS4 and Xbox) come with a mic so in game we can use area/group chat and mail, outside of this there is console messaging and party chat. Any word on if you'll be able to type without going into the menu and typing through there?ZOS_GinaBruno wrote: »Yes, you will be able to just type in an emote command into the text chat window. Can anyone confirm or deny if typing in the commands for emotes will work? It's not mandatory to use.Can it be switched off so the chat box doesnt show even if people are talking/typing whatever? I seem to recall a fair few vocal anti-text folk. You know, the kind of people who just cannot live with text chat being an option.Clerics1985 wrote: »DCUO.Clerics1985 wrote: »Wait what?

Full screen overlay for typing?
What the hell ZOS? If this really this the case, you've taken a great idea and you've made it....not even mediocre. It sound so horrible that I may not even bother....and I've been waiting for text chat since launch.
you had to see this coming, when you text on your Phone it does the same thing, consoles are not designed with Keyboards in mind initially so how would the Controller users navigate Texting just using the chat windowpane and their Controller??
Text chat is functional, easily accessible, window is resizeable (definitely does not default to full screen). Granted, using the virtual keyboard does cause a bigger overlay to appear....but really, if you're going to make use of text chat who wouldn't get the chat pad or a keyboard?
With all due respect, it's not about what you "expect" other people to do. For example, they added Voice chat to consoles which we (PC) have to use a third party program to get in the first place. You guys got that off the bat because they "expected" that to be what most players would use, but instead most began wailing about Text chat.
Your move.
No, no no...
most did not complain, there were a few vocal crybabies that just...couldnt...live....without .....text.

they wont (gina just said theyll have it off as default) she did say that theyll make it known that there is text chat but i hope that people give it a try or at least turn it on during dungeons or other group content. there would be nothing more annoying than a pug who doesnt have text chat on and isnt in group chat because "immersion" or whateverdisintegr8 wrote: »I don't think PS4 needs text chat but if people wish to use it, so be it - I'll just leave it turned off. No offense but when people like you just turn off area chat and soon to come text chat... you make the game feel more like a single player than a MMORPG and it is for that reason that spontaneous PUG's are much harder to get going because asking in area chat or soon to be text chat falls on deaf ears because nobody has them turned on!!
I really hope people leave the text chat on as you can miss out on a lot of fun stuff and not to mention some really good deals on gear/crafting supplies.... (IE - /say "Selling Kutas for 5k a pop").
Hammy!!
We plan on publishing an article on the website prior to Update 11 on console that will (hopefully) answer everyone's questions.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »I'm more interested in how the linking of items and zone-wide or non-zone wide text chat will work.

Glad that the feature is coming as there was a bunch of threads for and against the idea.
From PTS concepts, and dev comments, this seems to be the best way to offer the feature.
Now as far as its impact...
Everyone has to remind themselves that these communication options are only "options."
Reality is this:
-Some will never chat in game via text or voice
-some will always chat in game via text and voice
-some will only do one or the other
-some will prompt interactions with emotes, but fall into one or no other categories
-some will continue to use social media for guild and trade (Xbox has Facebook friend look )up and seemingly a Twitter option that's not the same as well as incoming Xbox Communities.
I do know that you'll want to make sure initially that you're not expecting PC-like experiences from the incoming text chat. This is going to be a console-like text chat experience diluted as its turned off by default (which it should be) and hopefully this doesn't bring upon ram issues.
Another game were testing has a ram component tied to text chat in a game that offers both

I see it as an additional benefit, and one that compliments area chat for those who wish to use that function. If it means players who had previously chosen not to communicate vocally in-game now have an opportunity to converse through text, that seems like a positive additional outcome to me.puffytheslayer wrote: »i honestly cant see how text chat can benefit us as a community in ways that area chat doesnt already

This is all a bunch of conjecture because as usual you have no idea and speak on things your only guessing about.
Until zos post the video with all the details, then none of us know anything. Even what's on PTS right now isn't a finalized version. So keep on guessing. We all know how you feel about this subject.
Edit: Btw.... how does having it off by default dilute the actual feature. The short answer is.... it doesn't.
And NO IT SHOULDN'T be turned off by default. Is voice chat turned off by default? I honestly think this is an ignorant decision.
@MissBizz thread on this subject answers a few of these questions.

Respect your opinion but it's not conjecture. Also, please don't keep applying your assumptions to my opinions cause in your comments, it's comes off as arggressive when you prob don't intend it to be.
Having it off by default dilutes this because communication only works when its occurring between two or more. Just as in voice chat being off dilutes the actual effectiveness of voice chat, the same applies to text chat.
Voice chat is on by default until turned off while text chat is off until turned on by default. Tow conversations at the same time at different rates is chaotic.
When we port or travel today the voice chat kicks us out of group chat and guild chat usually and places us into proximity chat. Then it requires us to go back in. That takes away from the feature too and this isn't fixed.
Not having text chat on by default is similar.
While your opinion is that text chat should be on by default my opinion is that it should be off by default because I personally don't want to see it which is why my proximity voice chat is also off until I choose to turn it on.
ZOS isn't going to please everyone with any mix and match of on or off by default so less frictions is best. This feature didn't exist so when it's added it'll prob notify us that we can turn it on kinda like SCT is off by default or name plates, etc.
It makes perfect sense. Ppl who want these things will change their settings and be happy while those who didn't want these can continue without interruptions.

Lol I'm not assuming. Have you seen and used the final version of console text chat? That answer would be no. So yes it is conjecture on your part.
It's also conjecture on your part by assuming what people will do and how the feature will be used.
Guess we'll agree to disagree yet again.
