What the hell ZOS? If this really this the case, you've taken a great idea and you've made it....not even mediocre. It sound so horrible that I may not even bother....and I've been waiting for text chat since launch.
Agree, on consoles we should simply be able to hit enter (if we have a keyboard connected) and then be able to enter text. This having to go in via the menu is silly...
@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom any chance you can comment on exactly how the final functionality for the console text chat will be?
Both when you have a keyboard connected, and if you want to use on screen keyboard/smartphone.
if you take time to read comments its fully explained in this thread

You explain that we have to go into start menu, and then press a button in order to bring up the chat window and be able to chat. That is fine.
However I would like it where I can simply press enter at any time, on a connected keyboard, and be able to type, without having to go through start menu etc.
I see no one saying that the latter is possible, which is why I ask if it might be possible when it is released, or if the current state is working as intended.
Or did I miss something?

i did state that doing so on the pc while i was in the controller UI when hitting enter on the keyboard did allow me to type directly into the chat box and forgo the start,x,type route

you had to see this coming, when you text on your Phone it does the same thing, consoles are not designed with Keyboards in mind initially so how would the Controller users navigate Texting just using the chat windowpane and their Controller??
Text chat is functional, easily accessible, window is resizeable (definitely does not default to full screen). Granted, using the virtual keyboard does cause a bigger overlay to appear....but really, if you're going to make use of text chat who wouldn't get the chat pad or a keyboard?
With all due respect, it's not about what you "expect" other people to do. For example, they added Voice chat to consoles which we (PC) have to use a third party program to get in the first place. You guys got that off the bat because they "expected" that to be what most players would use, but instead most began wailing about Text chat.
Your move.
Don't even try to sit in the victim seat here. You PC players have all the bells and whistles at your disposal. You know it!
Add ons, third party voice programs(MANY ARE FREE and work far better than this in game voip stuff), customisable UI, better graphics, etc etc... and you're going to sit there and basically put the shame game on us for requesting a standard format that you use on a regular basis? The hell? lol
Don't sit there acting like you are lacking options when clearly we have the lesser here. We get what ever they give to us. That's it.
At least make it viable. Start,go to menu, scroll to this , click that. Really?
Just put an option to display on screen or not!
Done! How hard is that?
Apparently too hard.
If they're going to give us what we actually requested, at least give us what we ACTUALLY requested. And I don't mean some ridiculous and inefficient method to type with. How hard is it to mimic the pc versions text box? Instead they brainstorm for another way. Why?
It makes no sense.

Hopefully this is the route they have taken with console UI and keyboard.
And thanks hamburgler for taking the time to answer our questions.

Hopefully the final version is vastly different from the first look on PTS, we need it to be simple and like on PC or it will be next to useless.
This confirms that this isn't the final version though

Are you referring to what the gamepad mode text chat currently looks like on the PTS? If so, it's not a good representation of what it will look like when fully in the game on consoles. We'll see if we can get you a screenshot of what it actually looks like.
I'll leave this here. Can't wait to see how it will look on consoles on August 16th

Get out.. really?! I did not know that. I'm still technologically challenged. I guess I will be scrubbing Amazon for a PS4-compatible keyboard then. Heck, this is my first MMORPG, if this is consider such or similar in variance, and I just bought a headset for the PS4 so I can be able to chat, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get the headset to work. Not sure if it's plugged into the right slot of not.. definitely not a tech geek here. Lol!

Any standard USB wireless keyboard will work. There is a USB dongle that plugs into one of the USB ports on the console, then put batteries in the keyboard and you are good to go.

You have to hit start go into the social tab and in there is a text chat option or after update 11 you can hit start then X to go directly to text chat as right now hitting start then X takes you to quick emotes after update 11 it takes you to console text chat. Once in there you hit A to start typing then when your done hit X to send. now when playing in the world chat does just pop up in a little chat box in the bottom left but to answer or respond you do have to hit start and go to that text chat tab. Just making this i have not seen any description of how text chat work for console. Also wanted to note i think its funny how the console text chat is on the PC PTS for them to test. XD
Yeah that's funny as hell.
Well not really, the two are not different whatsoever. The console version is a copy-paste of PC version without addons and controller UI enabled... This generation of consoles are on x64 platform like PC's are, heck even the latest android devices are for much easier multiplatform development. All that differs is the amount of hardware and the operating system.
not saying their different saying its funny they put it on PC pts and asked console player to take a look on there and give feed back like 99% of console players cant get on pts lol i tested this out using a control on my pc sitting like 2 feet from my monitor i assume it works great but i dont play on console so i have no feed back here nor do i play with a living room scenario
Might need to do it then, i often plug my PC into my TV and sit on the sofa, however i can only tolerate it for about 30 minutes before needing to go back to the desk, just doesn't feel right. I will do it though to test it and get the "console experience" right.
this is why i assume they went with the full screen text when actually typing i imagine that small little text box can be hard to read from across the room
