brandishsteel wrote: »ZOS SHOULD BAN PEOPLE WHO USE NATION AS THEIR NAME
I am not kidding
not many video games allow these name exist
if I make a character called "American" , and I do some crap in the game , people will say : "American is crap" when they talking about me
so what will the real American feel about ? Does every American in the game know what u actually talking about ?
ZOS should ban these people for using A NATION as their name , OR at least force them change to another name ( which is a better choice)
AND zos should not allow anyone who use a Country name as their character name when creating new character
this is potentially ASSAULT A NATION/COUNTRY by using these names in the game
Edited to remove profanity

Btw, I remember in Dungeons Dragons Online, even the name of brazilian politics were banned lol xD, I wonder where did they get tha from.
FYI...
North America is a continent, as is South America both consisting of multiple countries. America is another word used for 'United States'. It is one country, not a continent.

Btw political correctness is a good thing because it helps to defend minorities against bullying and other harrassments.
A good thing? In your opinion. Political correctness silences voices (usually the intelligent) because people get easily offended way too often these days. Can't say much else about that on these forums.
Yes, it does silence voices. It silences voices of the bullies and intolerant blatants that spread hate and intolerance everywhere. When you state that "because people get easily offended way too often these days" you are blamming the victim that feels offended , instead of the offender that is saying something that may offend a person or a group.

Maybe inside the USA - but in the rest of the world America refers to both continents - we do not even use a plural to address both. And to say, that someone from South America would not be an american is just ignorant.

Over here it is ignorant to call Mexicans or Canadians by the name Americans. These are three separate populations members to different countries. I understand what you mean because you have the term European to refer to citizens of countries on your continent but it is not like that on this side of the pond because especially on this side of the world there are less countries.
For you being French you are also European. For me I am a Californian living in Virginia. I have lived here the majority of my life to the point where identify more with Virginians more then the state where I was born. We are however all Americans. Mexicans and Canadians for example are not Americans because Americans refers universally to citizens of the coalition of states called the United States. It's easy for foreigners to forget this because externally since we are unified under one voice and one Army composed of citizens of all states we are seen as one country with the leader of the Federal Government being our primary representative. Maybe if you think of it in terms of how the European Union is trying to be formed it will be more clear.

I have lived and was born in the US for most of my life (as well as all over the world) and I have never been ignorant enough to refer to myself as an "American". I am from the United States. Just as a European is from the continent of Europe, or an Asian is from the continent of Asia or an African is from the continent of Africa, etc...
It is the ultimate in hubris, arrogance and ignorance to refer to those who live in the United States as Americans. We are North Americans, as are Mexicans or Canadians as we live on the North American continent. Those from Brazil or Argentina or Chile (or any of so many other countries) on the South American continent are South American. And on and on and on.
The rest of the planet looks at people from the United States askance when we refer to ourselves as "American". We are not "American". We are US Citizens. That not only marginalizes, but is vaguely insulting to the other peoples that live on our continent.

Nope. Americans are United States citizens. Canadians are citizens of Canada. Mexicans are citizens of Mexico.
It is improper to call the country America but it is not improper to call the citizens Americans. It isn't arrogance. It is simply a matter of that is the tag the country has picked for itself as a whole.
The rest of the planets outlook is irrelevant. The rest of the planet has no say in the governing of the United States government. Just as I will not dictate what any other country is called or what the countries citizens refer to themselves.

2) Agree an disagree. The country is not "America" and it's citizens are not "Americans". It is arrogance and ignorance to think so.
3) "The rest of the plant's outlook is irrelevant"? Now that is perhaps the most arrogant thing I have ever heard. The United States is a relatively small country population-wise (around 450 million), not big at all. If you truly believe that the United States is the end all and be all of importance, I pity your future. This is a planet with 7 billion (give or take) people on it, of which the US is only 6% of the population. This is exactly the attitude that makes much of the civilized world despise the US in so many ways.
Honestly, you really need to travel the world and see how your attitude stands. You will be sadly disappointed.

I am not confusing the difference between countries and continents. The US exists on the North American Continent as do Canada and Mexico. Brazil, Argentina, Chile (and many others) exist on the South American Continent. France, Germany, Italy and Spain exist on the European Continent. Australia exists on the continent of Australia and is the only country that also bears the name of the continent (Antarctica is not a country, only a continent).
There is no confusion. The United States of America is not America. It is the United States of America. The Americas are the North American and South American continents (and there are many countries included there - Central America is not a continent and is generally considered to be part of the North American continent although, sometimes it is split between North and South through the use of the Panama canal.
If you wish to refer to yourself as an American, fine, that is your right. If the rest of the planet considers you a fool for doing so, that is their right.
The only part I will not accept is that you directly refer to the rest of the planet as "irrelevant". That I take exception too. Obviously you do not respect other people's cultures as you directly dismiss their opinions and beliefs. We are a tiny fraction of the world's population and have no right to dismiss them.
I am, as much of, if not more so, a proud citizen of the United States and my families go back to a time period long before there even was a United States of America on the North American continent. I, however, accept that we do not have 1 "culture" in this country. We are a conglomeration of many cultures in the United States. The "culture" in Louisiana has very little to do with the "culture" in New York, or Portland Oregon or even in Alabama. We are a proud nation that is a "melting pot". We have Muslims, and Christians, and Jews, and Southerners and Mid-Westerners and West Coast and East Coast and Black and White and Native American and Latino and Cuban and so much, much, much more.
There is a massive difference between pride and hubris.
