That's pretty much the goal of the PC crowd. North America is a continent, as is South America both consisting of multiple countries. America is another word used for 'United States'. It is one country, not a continent.

I'm sorry you probably missed my other comment, so I will quote it.Actually, in the academic fields and more educated areas, in Brazil we use "estadunidense" (unitedstatesan), it's actually silly to say "américa" or "americanos" refering to USA when talking to more educated people or even writing a paper with those words. But we still say Latin-americans, north-americans, pan-americans etc.
Btw, The Concise Oxford Dictionary records first appearance of the the gentile "American" in 1679 .
You know that they actually called United States of North America before 1778? But they shortened it to America, perharps they didn't want competition from a possible United States of South America.
Anyway, we still call America to refer colectively to the three american continents, at least in Brazil. América Edit: If you scroll throught the languages, you will see that english is the only one that uses América in the plural. XD
