America, singular, is the generally accepted shorthand for United States of America.
Using "USAian" will make you look silly because it parses out to United States of American. Huh?

Actually, in the academic fields and more educated areas, in Brazil we use "estadunidense" (unitedstatesan), it's actually silly to say "américa" or "americanos" refering to USA when talking to more educated people or even writing a paper with those words. But we still say Latin-americans, north-americans, pan-americans etc.

Btw, The Concise Oxford Dictionary records first appearance of the the gentile "American" in 1679 .

You know that they actually called United States of North America before 1778? But they shortened it to America, perharps they didn't want competition from a possible United States of South America.

Anyway, we still call America to refer colectively to the three american continents, at least in Brazil. América Edit: If you scroll throught the languages, you will see that english is the only one that uses América in the plural. XD

Eh, just no. If you requesting ZOS to make those with offensive names related to countries to be forced to name change it would be alright, but seriously... Nothing in their TOS indicates having a country's name in their character or account name is against the rules.

I know that may not be your case but when you post things like this you ended up sounding like a person that complains that can't be racist, homophobic, machist anymore.

Btw political correctness is a good thing because it helps to defend minorities against bullying and other harrassments.

A good thing? In your opinion. Political correctness silences voices (usually the intelligent) because people get easily offended way too often these days. Can't say much else about that on these forums.

Yes, it does silence voices. It silences voices of the bullies and intolerant blatants that spread hate and intolerance everywhere. When you state that "because people get easily offended way too often these days" you are blamming the victim that feels offended , instead of the offender that is saying something that may offend a person or a group.

Well I think people should be banned for using names lifted directly from other fantasy novels/movies.

"Oh, you like Legolas do you? You're going to make an Elf with that name? Bet no one has tried that! But wait! It's already taken? Well maybe you should think of something new? Oh, no, instead you are going to try to spell it Lagolas? Oh is that taken also? The other 20 variations you tried are also taken?"

    @Milvan

That's a pretty biased, ignorant view to claim that it only silences "bullies," implying that political correctness -only- targets those who are spreading hate and offensive jokes.

You've bought into lie, into the whole "new speak" described by George Orwell, 1984 -- To change and transform the language so that the words no longer existed to say anything in detail -- the words will eventually no longer exist to criticize authority. When you destroy the language, when you destroy words so that you cannot speak in a way that expresses your thoughts, then as the generations pass, that also stops you even thinking in detail, because on one level, when we think; we think in words. If those words don't exist to express your own thoughts then you won't be able to think in detail when expressing yourself. It's not all about stopping offensive, obvious, negative insults, it's bigger than that. Look at the bigger picture.

In the real world, If you take offence to a word I say (that may not ALWAYS be a direct, malicious, blatant word intended to offend,) it's not my problem, it's your problem for how you react to the word being said. It's all about your reaction, so those who're constantly falling for political correctness will mostly always be offended.

Simple as that, really. Now this forum isn't exactly the place to even discuss this so I tried to keep it as civil as possible and you obviously have a different opinion, go ahead and express it all you like but you won't convince me otherwise, therefore, this is all I'll say on this matter.

Bullies and intolerants! The rhetoric from proponents of political correctness is insidious. They start with things that no "right-thinking" citizen should think, such as comments about sexual deviants or somesuch, and by the time they're done you have a situation like in England, where a fat person could be arrested for telling fat jokes because a skinny person overheard them and took "offence".

It's frighteningly similar to the way the alphabet soup agencies talk about protecting children, stopping terrorists and stopping drugs in order to try and justify looking at every bit and byte of data we send over the internet.

Pro tip: there are far worse things in the world than someone telling a moron that they're a moron.

I'm pretty sure when Orwell wrote that he was talking about emancipation of the subjugation of the status quo, not defending it how you presume. I'm pretty sure that he would be totally for political correcteness, because it helps to fight the intolerance and hate towards oppressed people. Orwell is all about setting oppressed people free and political correctness does target this objective. I don't know what kind of propaganda have you readed, but political correctness is good for society and for minorities and is directed to people that want to be intolerant, if you don't do this kind a thing, you don't have to worry about it.

You can still say whatever you want, if I find it offensive (at least in democractic countries) I have the right to contest it in properly estabilished institutions. I must have the right to, whenever I feel offended, activate those institutions. They will check if it is "your problem" or not, not you, if it was intentional, etc.

However, on this occasion I'll bow to political correctness, specifically the bit where you can't expect people to earn their certificate because everyone, even the kid who came in last, is a winner. Short history: you have all the right to activate the proper institutions if you feel offended comrade.

Long history: you have all the right to activate the proper institutions if you feel offended comrade, if they lack imparciality and end up judging both sides based on their wealth, skill color, sexual orientation, gender etc. Then we shall rebel against the status quo.

PC is about questioning the status quo. It's about challenging those that use the "freedom of speech' argument in order to spread hate and intolerance. It's quite simple, if you say something that offends someone, he has the right to question it in the proper democratic institutions. There is no big deal about it, calling this censorship or opression is just propaganda.

Thats why we need proper democratic institutions comrade. To analyze and judge those cases. The problem is that democracy now days is elitist and only defends the typical white, rich, heterosexual male.
This is why PC is important, because it empowers minorities and excluded sectors of society in order to construct a more inclusive and substantial democracy.
