I'm switching my Nord to a Breton. Possibly my Orc to Redguard but I like that damage passive.

From reading the article I suspect it will be some sort of in game currency to use name change, appearance change and race change.

The additional hair styles etc were stated to be purchasable through the crown store, but the basics (race change, name change, app change) said it would be a token system.

Race change is not something that can ever be in game. There's no lore way of doing it. It will be crown store only. Keep deluding yourself that you won't have to pay for it though, see how that works out for you :)

It would be cool if you purchase a token from the crown store and then go talk to a npc and they do some kind of hex on you or something and you turn into another race.

No need for 2 Altmer sorcerers... one will become a Bosmer.

I'm going to contribute to each and every thread on this long-known and for most irrelevant topic and point out that I'm going to do precisely nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I am in favour of min-maxers having the chance to switch their characters to the favoured race of the month especially if they have to buy crowns in order to do so each time and thereby contribute to the game's funding, but I personally see no point in it.

Some people don't see the need for it and therefore don't want it.
Or they come up with RP and lore reason and thus want to confine everyone else with it.

And I interpret the token system being there so they can toss you a few free changes when you buy the extra hair styles. There will definitely be an ingame gold token system. It doesn't make sense to charge for both extras and the means to use them than it does to sell crown permits to swap costumes.

Also they mentioned race balances coming with race change a while back. We'll have to see when it hits PTS.

I think there are two valid arguments against race change:
    • It can lead to abuse by players who switch to the "build of the month" for the most effective class/race combination.
    • It can lead to abuse by ZOS who could nerf this race or buff that race to 'encourage' players to change their race.

all other reasons fall into the "you should play like I play" category so they're not really valid. And this is being said by someone who feels that choices should matter and that players who want to play a different race should reroll and doesn't think race change is needed.

"Some people" play this game because they love a good RPG. For them, if your choices don't matter and don't have consequences, that's not a good game. It is, in fact, a terrible game--in their opinion.

A lot of those "some people" think it's perfectly cool for you to disagree, but also feel that there are already plenty of games out there for you where your choices don't matter and have no consequences. There are so few games where choices do matter, and "some people" really wish others didn't feel the need to turn one of the few games where things matter into one of the many games where they don't.

But hey, don't let any of that change your opinion. Go right on believing that "some people" don't care about anyone but themselves and want to impose their will on others--all the while enjoying the benefits of your will being imposed on "some people," who can only watch a game they love discard one of the things they love about it, something they value, something that "some people" consider essential to a game being good.

    I swear, some people.

This is exactly why they are offering it. I understand it's a video game with magic and such, but changing race is a bit impractical. Gender change seems to be the new thing out there in the real world, but not many changing races. I mean, Robert Downey Jr. tried it in Tropic Thunder, look how that turned out for him.

i could never switch based on stats, that just doesn't work me...so my nord DK will always remain. for me it's all about gameplay and just the general feel of the class. so i'm glad it's here i just hope the community doesn't go overboard like in wow where everybody was a human.

but i did use the crap out of it in WoW, but not for the stats like most others. i started on the alliance side way back in 2005 because that's where my friends were and all my characters were humans except for one night elf. but deep down, i always a horde inside. :)

finally i took a mid level character and changed him to an orc and really liked it. transferred another to a tauren, end up not liking the tauren and changed him to an undead.....and it was pure love for me. :) ended up switching almost all my toons to an undead. left one toon on the alliance side that i played with my girlfriend.

I'll probably do something similar here....all my toons are humans, but have been curious about kitties and lizards. but kinda attached to two of them, do have a breton sorc, but something about breton's just doesn't sit will with me. he might be a good one to switch to an argonian to taste the muddy waters.

The main reason against it in my view (apart from the whole lore aspect in an RPG of "I'm an orc today, tomorrow I'll be a wood elf") is that it affords ZOS a cop-out so far as racial passive balancing is concerned. If there are genuine concerns over individual racial passives then the way to address those concerns is for the passives to be fixed, not for players to be charged gold or crowns to switch to a different set of passives.

After the race change goes live, the ONLY meaningful decision at character creation will be your class. And maybe your alliance, but since there's no bonus for that, no-one (other than a handful of PvPers that don't like being on the losing team) cares.

So, for an RPG*, that's a pretty limited set of character traits to work with. Whatever did gamers do before these kind of perks were handed out like candy to people that either can't be bothered to read what they're clicking on, or want to blame their lackluster performance on their racial choice? Trust me, you still gonna get rekt in PvP, even after you roll over to the FOTM "best" race - the only difference is that you won't be able to blame your race any more (You'll have to resort to crying about hax or exploiters or zergs or something).

Personally, I like my Argonian squad and wouldn't change them for anything. But I'm gonna laugh when the race change is hilariously expensive and the rage of a thousand entitled gamers is unleashed on the forums.

    * Feel free to argue amongst yourselves as to whether ESO is really an RPG.
