I think the numbers of players actively playing end game content, is a more impressive way to look at if its a successful mmo or not
    PC, EU server, Ebonheart Pact

Finally a reason not to play League of Legends

Nah, this does not matter at all - millions of players, who are subscribed and play only 20-40hrs/month, will not get any near to end game content anytime soon - but they contribute for a long time with their subscription, even they might not go far in relation to end game content - and some, like me for example, will never want to reach end game at all.

Edit: I will give an example - if a review says, that a game has 80 hrs of content - this means for me, it will last me about 80 weeks, on my pace - and there are a lot like me, who might not even have done the main quest in Skyrim in full yet - with hundreds of hours of game play, where they did a lot of stuff, but not necessarily with a focus on "beating" the game. I read even that the majority of TES players (in that poll) have not completed the main quest in Bethesda games - I can fully understand it, it did not take my interest as well, I have done them once, and then never again. Because there is plenty of other content to do - and end game in ESO is similar, there is not for all something in it - to me exploring Tamriel is what is fun and crafting and from time to time do a quest - i guess, the majority of players did not reach level 50 yet - too many casuals with too less time to play, so this is similar to not doing the main quest in full - but those are paying customers as well even they have not much time to play.

Well 7 million isn't bad. Of course, it has a ways to go before it reaches the more than 100 million unique accounts created to play World of Warcraft (a figure quoted by Blizzard on Battle.net in 2014).

It will most likely never get there - WoW achieved most of that at a time, when there was not that much concurrence in the MMORPG market. But nowadays there are plenty of alternatives and so it is hard for any game to ever reach such numbers again.

It was at most an estimation. ZOS has not previously released details on the number of active accounts. People were estimating it based on steam purchases as far as I'm aware.

Bots alone bought three million copies in the first six months. Two million players bought ESO when it has been on sale for $12. That leaves two million suckers, of which I am one.

LOL, from what dark and smelly orifice did you pull that statistic? How could you possibly know how many accounts were sold to bots?

Furthermore, the game cost $60 back at launch, so that would mean your "bots" (I assume you meant gold sellers) spent $180 MILLION on ESO accounts. That doesn't make any sense, because it doesn't seem likely any of those guys could ever expect to recoup an investment that large.

I think that would be 7,000,000 potential characters among all active players ;) Very clever

Yes, and that makes it at most an educated guess - not even an estimate, because even guessing it from steam sales is at best a good guess. See I can do that as well, and say, based on other numbers released by other MMO companies, I would say the server concurrency load at prime time is as follows:

    150,000 in total
    60,000 on Xbox1
    40,000 on ps4
    30,000 on PC NA
    20,000 on PC Eu

and I might not even be that wrong with it - still it is just a guess. And this would be for a total of about 4.5 million active players.

A lot - I have inherited a guild, which was created at that time and has all the corpses in it, which never made it to an active player - about 2/3 of the guild is dead - from the rest just about 1/3 is logging in at least once per week.

7 mill is sad number. They havent even gotten their money back yet. If ESO cost 200mill like most people think. Triple A MMORPG are dead? This is perfect example of why I think they are dead and devs are never going to invest so much money anymore. Bye bye games like SWTOR or ESO.

    @Sausage

I think you're waaaaay off base with that comment.

7 mil accounts means that at least 1/10th has spent money on the game as at least some other transaction. We know this to be true because a few months in PC launch there were that many active subs. Add in console ....

So even if it's less, 1/10th is the number I'm using to represent possible crown, ESO plus purchases. If only 1/10th spent either $15 or did only 1 sub ever.....that's $10.5 mil.

If 7 mil spent $40 on the game that's $280 mil

Not sure how you're calculating but it's pretty clear that they are more than profitable.

Nope, just copies sold, or more likely, accounts created. It doesn't mean 7 million are playing now, but 7 million paying people have logged on on 7 million different accounts since launch, free access (beta, weekends, etc..) not included. Since they're taking into account everyone since launch, of course the figure can only be growing.

I don't know if that's a lot, or not, in the MMO world. I guess it's a lot, otherwise it wouldn't have mentioned it.

Well, accounts created does not mean all would have paid for those - there was this free trial weekend last year - and I guess all those accounts count as well.

No, Matt made it clear that the beta players and trail accounts were not included in the 7 million. It's 7 million paid accounts over 2 years time.

I have to say, I'm surprised it's so low!

I thought they would of sold more copies as it's across 3 platforms.

Would of been interesting to see how many actually still play!

At one time WoW claimed to have had 10-12 million players playing their game. 7 million is impressive for an MMO and once it launches in Japan that number can only go up.

MANY ppl just have 2nd accounts because before crafting bags we needed the storage.

Crafting bags should have been here since launch then that 7 mil would probably be 4,5million.

Also keep in mind how many of us loyal ESO fans bought this game for a friend during the steam sales and how most of those people never even log on.

I would rather be interested in the monthly activity #, especially the people who log on every day ( use 3 months as a sample and give us the stats of #? logged in every day or at least x5 a week)
