If I add a dot and then use major brutality will the dot ticks increase by 20 percent?

Depends on which DOT you use, if its a DOT that costs stamina to cast the dmg will be increased by the major brutality buff.
Stamina based skills scale off max stamina, weapon dmg and weapon crit.

If the DOT costs magicka to cast it scales off max magicka, spell dmg and spell crit.
In this case you would need major sorcery to buff the dmg.

If use cast the dot THEN buff up, the ticks won't increase. At least this is how it works with tooltips that state x damage over y seconds. Idk if it works the same for those that state x daage every y seconds.

They do. At least it's what I remember from testing it by using unbuffed caltrops then casting rally, reading the SCT.

    @Septimus_Magna

Does it matter if there are 6 hit dot and major brutality is activated half way through ?
Will the last 3 hits be amplified or be ignored for being pre-acitved ?

I think that is what the OP may be asking.

Yes if I use a 12 second dot and 3 seconds into it I buff major brutality will the rest of the ticks add the 20 percent dmg.

Note that major brutality does not increase the damage done by your abilities by 20%, but instead increases your "weapon damage" stat, which is only a part of the final damage calculations.

Yeah forgot, but still wondering the answer to the question.

Dmg is always calculated on the moment the dmg hits, this counts for all abilities as far as I know.

For example, if you put down liquid lightning (ground aoe dot) it will check each dmg tick how much max magicka, spell dmg, spell crit, spell penetration, elemental dmg increase etc etc you have to come up with the max dmg number. Then it checks the resist of the target and subtracts it from the max dmg number to get the correct amount of dmg.

You can check this with a high and low level weapon, if you swap to the low level weapon you'll see the dmg decrease.

Same for magicka based shields, if you have Inner Light and Siphoning Ability/Bound Aegis on you shield bar the shield value will be buffed due to the higher max magicka value.

    Hhhhm, interesting.
That means dots arent offloaded to the target....but stick to the attacker until complete and are treated as a succession of instant attacks.
So in theory I could be attached to a mutitude of attacked players at once until all the dots expire.

Incorrect. Each tick of damage is calculated based on your stats at the time the ticks happen. Buffing, bar-swapping, etc. can and do affect all DoT damage you do.

Basically dots are reactive and recalculate damage with each tick. So if the dot in question scales with weapon damage then yes the next tick's damage with be increased.
