How to pull off 20k+ dps single target

In different forums I see people talking about reaching over 20k dps (some claim 40k) single target. I know I am not the best dps'er but on my magicka Templar with weapons and armor all v16 with only a couple armor pieces not legendary with just under 39k magicka and 2.8k spell damage I only get around 14k single target dps.
I have looked at different builds and rotate in my skills appropriately but that much difference seems like I am missing something and not just skillz.

ryanborror✭✭✭Magicka Templar doesn't require light attack weaving with sweeps except for ultimate every 8 or so seconds but you can do that on back bar with destro. As magicka Templar I use blazing spear, reflective light, elemental blockade, reserving trap , light attack between each and then sweeps. Radiant oppression under 25 percent health. I run sweeps on front bar and spear on back for crit passive. I try and keep up reflective light for illuminate minor sorcery. I usually run shooting star and dawnbreaker of smiting as ultimates. There is also an idea to not take the extended rays passive as instead of lengthening the duration of dawns wrath skills it will do the same damage in less time? Idk the reasoning but I'm currently doing it.dooderrr

Patouf✭✭✭Yes it is true, but 40k dps is hard to reach on single target 35k is amazing, 30k is great, 25k is good, 20k is common, 15k is for NB healer

You have to understand : smaller your group dps is , longer the fight is and less you can dps.
Your dps depends on group dps too (and all buffs on battlefield).

✭20k can be achieved by flawless weaving and timely ultimates. 40k needs group buffs plus multiple stacked dots plus flawless weaving and timely ultimates. This is a very simple way of looking at it.PC | EU0 -

✭20k is remarkably common nowadays.... 25k is slightly above average. 30k is pretty good. And 40k++ is for leet end game builds. To hit 20k, just need proper gear, proper animation cancelling.
I can sleep play with my DK in full PvP gear and mash WB with 2 dots + standard for 20k DPS lol.

In PvE group DPS, no, they do very well. Better than a stamblade. In sustained PvE group DPS, one of the main determining factors in how a class does is how many DoTs that they can work into their rotation. This is why DKs of either variety are king. And why sorcs lag behind (though their burst DPS with Overload lead people to ignore this problem). Stamblades are good at burst DPS. Interesting, thanks for the post, but how did you apply Pierce Armor and Siphon Spirit using dual wield and Destro staff on your bars? Or did those come from the tank, and you are assuming they would normally come from teammates?
I would be curious what you can reach actually solo, and also (since I am terrible at weaving) what dps you think would be achievable on a templar without weaving/animation canceling?

✭I don't see anyone mentioning here that people who crank out 25-40k dps are utilizing both bars and two different weapon types, including ground aoes for single target fights, such as wall of elements and arrow barrage.
Arrow Barrage, for example, adds roughly 2k dps to a rotation that isn't already using it. Having a vMA bow to make it stronger turns this ~2k dps to an additional ~4-4.5k dps.
Or, consider a bow user who is already using arrow barrage, try incorporating other aoes for single target fights, such as caltrops and blade cloak.
Magicka users should be using their ground-based aoes for single target as well, including skills such as wall of elements, lightning splash, path of shadows, proxy det, etc.
Supplementing your rotation with these aoe skills even for single target fights is a must for achieving these dps milestones.Edited by Autolycus on May 18, 2016 5:42PM0
