I played cops and robbers as a kid, and nobody thought it was weird.

Roleplaying doesn't seem weird to me now, either. I mean, we're ALREADY running around in a fictitious world pretending we're a sword-swinging, spell-slinging hero.

I've been called a roleplayer because I occasionally *smile* or *giggle* in chat. I guess that's part of it.

"This one" rolled a khajiit to dip "her" toes in the roleplaying world. We'll see how it goes.

I'll admit, I was halfway like this at one point. My dumb arse once thought I could pull DPS, tanking, and healing with a sword and board, bow, and heavy armor as a templar khajiit. This. I've roleplayed in other games where people have godlike characters. One I saw was a vampire / werewolf hybrid, of Van Helsing style with a modified crossbow that was the D&D version of an assault rifle ( the character had apparently modified the crossbow to fire at least eight bolts in one release or some such nonsense ) and couldn't ever die unless a certain specific set of conditions were met that were just out of this world, almost literally.
It was all rather ridiculous, and really not much fun.

I've also encountered a lot of people who roleplay, but can't seem to differentiate between the character and the person behind the character. One of my last RP group in another game was consistently receiving indignant private messages about "why was he so mean" because his character had a very abrasive personality. They simply assumed that because the character was horrible, that the person playing him was horrible too, which couldn't have been further from the truth.

That said, I've always found playing the role of my character to be a lot of fun. I've seen many, many people say it's weird, stupid, or that roleplayers are people who need psychological help. What I've never understood is that most of those people probably enjoy seeing a movie, or a play, and those actors are doing the very thing these people profess to be weird - playing a role.
Sure, they do it real time, and get paid astronomical amounts of money to assume a role, but it's basically the same thing, simply the vehicle is different.

I'd love to roleplay more in ESO, but I rarely to never see anyone doing it. And from the amounts of threads I've seen about people complaining about randoms trying to join into their scenarios, I've never bothered contributing to the RP I have seen.

I have come across some people who refused to help with a boss, because it would break their chracters immersion since they swore never to hurt mudcrabs. So that got me like, oh god why.

No, it's not cringeworthy at all. Why would you even think it is?

Roleplaying is just as valid as a playstyle as PvE or PvP and in fact it's the only thing that interests me in ESO. I don't care about leaderboards at all. And besides, ESO is a MMORPG, not a MOBA and not simply a MMOG.

While I selected ^^^ it highly depends on the situation. Standard talking in character and and immersing yourself into the story is fine and I would not consider that cringe worthy. This is what I would consider role playing.

But....

It seems like an increasing number of people mistake the words role play as having to be about sexual fetishes. Living out sexual desires in game I do consider cringe worthy. Looking in zone chat for a "RP/ERP partner" because you want to have cyber sex with some random kid person, is cringe worthy.

The people who RP and report someone for being a drunken Nord and dancing on a table because it breaks their immersion... IS cringe worthy.

Not at all, in fact I wish there was more of it in ESO as I never seem to encounter any. To this day, the best online MMORPG I ever played was a text based game (yes, I'm an old timer) called Legends of Future Past. They used to have paid GMs that would create entire story lines that encouraged RP. You could actually advance your character simply via RP. It really created a sense of community and kept people playing much more then any new hunting round or place to grind.

I am slightly confused as to what brought up this question/poll in the first place but will give my two gold bits.

Roleplayers for the most part just add more liveliness to the game world, if they bother you then think of them as talkative npcs and just go about your business. Most roleplayers are just people who have a passion for the lore and want to enjoy the game with others who share that passion. Personally I enjoy catching tidbits of roleplay because I adore the lore of the game even though I don't roleplay much myself.

As many others have pointed out, that I agree with, it's really only cringe worthy when people forget to ERP in whisper, though on occasion I think non-roleplayers do that just to troll and cause the roleplayers to get raged at.

The real roleplayers weave stories from the lore and the characters they create. TESO is a stage to them, and they are the actors and actresses.
