Is Roleplaying cringeworthy?

Have you lot ever seen how lower than Barrens-tier the ERPers make zone chat in Glenumbra when they post to the wrong channel? Now, picture that, and it's happening in every damned inn or publicly accessible house from Daggerfall to Ghrahtwood. I rest my case.

    Total cringe.

Problem is the elitist attitude ingame here.
There is no room for 'crazy builds' (where the character is everything, negative sides and all) and the "perfect build" simply in not of consequence.
You cannot enter a dungeon with an RP build, since they kick you.
Waiting for one to open is already an issue for a "casual damage dealer", not to mention if you're an actual RP build.

The RPG in MMORPG has been destroyed badly...

Are you the guy who tries to heal people with a bow without slotting any heals?
    No, that I am not.
If you RP a healer, then he has to HEAL, wtf would be the point in playing a frikken doctor if you use a car garage?????

I and the rest of my Dunmer brothers and sisters do not partake in this "Role Playing" that you speak of.

It sounds like a game utilized by childish minds to process adult discussions and situations.

I ran into people role playing before, it can be fun!

Just yesterday, I ran into one role playing a Argonian from DC who was trying to fill out his check list of things to do in Cyrodiil. I caught him hitting the boss from a Dolmen I started up, and I used a detect potion on him to get him out of hiding. He was pretty white as a ghost and scared to death with his shield up when I caught him. When he saw he had nothing to fear he gleefully looted the chest while I stood and watched for trouble. He then thanked me for being merciful and we parted ways.

Nothing wrong with a little low key, no text based role play every now and then.

Not sure I understand the point in this poll.

Roleplaying is what it is and everyone will judge it as they will, a majority opinion doesn't make something fact either way.

Just let people enjoy gaming the way they want and focus on enjoying it the way you want. As long as neither of these ways is to deliberately ruin the enjoyment of others (geifing) then it's the only way gaming should be done.

Heh. The results so far just show what I've been saying for a while: ESO is very welcoming to Roleplayers.

Makes me miss my old RP guild.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I used to think it was cringe-worthy when I was a teenager, but eventually I realized that the Roleplayers I used to troll (on World of Warcraft) don't care about judgement/ridicule, and that's how I roll - so I gave it a go and yeah, it made me uncomfortable but then I understood that it can actually be fun and a good laugh to be honest, especially humorous/random type of Roleplay.

I began roleplaying (all pen and paper) with Earthdawn, by FASA corp when I was like 16.
Rolled into Warhammer (non-40K), Star Wars D6/D20, Auge des Meisters (a German RPG), dungeon and Dragons, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Five Circles, Call of Cthulu, and then a heap.

I think i got my share of RP, and mostly loved it (depending on the GM's, some were not good).

Can someone enlighten me on RPing? What do you do?

Basically it's acting out your character.

At the most basic level this includes not doing certain quests because they don't fit your character and making dialog choices in quests based on your character.
Those of us who take it a step further, act like the character would at all times, i.e. talking in character (contrary to common belief this doesn't necessarily involve Shakespeare's English ;) ), using emotes at appropriate times (both actual emotes and typed out stuff).

Ahh cool, thanks. So I guess I sorta role played when I made choices in witcher 3 I thought Geralt would have chosen?

To add; I also have lore friendly names. While I don't actively role play and ... well I mainly PvP. It is really nice to see player names that sound really authentic and are well thought out. Just because I don't role play doesn't mean I should make a disgusting name for my character-- after all a name is also an identity. And to me naming my character is something I take personally to make sure it sounds right rolling off the tongue. Plus I also really like double meaning names.

I don't really believe that true roleplaying is ever cringeworthy. I think that if a person or group is seriously roleplaying they should stay within the bounds of the game world and lore particularly if they are doing in areas where players congregate. On the other hand if what they are doing bugs me I can leave so I wouldn't presume to spoil their fun.

Pah! Khajiit laughs at your stupid question! This one will play however she wants! =^^=

Joking aside, either you like RP or you don't. But making a biased poll calling it "cringeworthy" is kinda insulting. To each his own, as many others have stated.

I am very active in the Dominion RP community, and am member of several RP guilds (even have my own). We have certain guidelines that people "have" to play by, in order not to have any godlike characters, and to avoid any conflicts. Just like some don't understand the appeal of RP, I don't understand the appeal of wanting to RP a godlike crazy character. But again, to each his own. Just not in my guilds!! As long as everyone agrees to the same terms and structure, RP is incredibly fun!:wink:

You get to actually BE your character. You get to act and talk the way you imagine your character would, and make decisions based on your characters personality. Many may not be aware of it, but almost every game in the world is in a way a RPG - any time get to make choices, you are pretty much roleplaying

RP can be fun in MMOs, ESO has a variety of tools to help with it. I tried it for a bit, but sadly I have very few time to play for now, and RP usually takes time.
I personally prefer the faster type of RP, where it's more like a conversation, but many people take 2-3 mins to write their replies and it kind of bores me and want to leave XD I never tell them that though, I don't want them to feel bad about it :x

For me its only cringeworthy when RPers roll out mary/gary sues. I do my best to create flawed, believable characters and its painful to try and have an interaction with another player that insists on being the best at everything, knows everything, has the attention of everyone and so forth. Its like a character from the Walking Dead comic book meeting Superman. Its just sad.

Otherwise its really fun. I get to shed my real life concerns and obligations for a time for a chance to escape to another time, place and existence. I get to explore things I will never get to see, do or learn from in real life. I'll never be a Mercenary fighting on behalf of whomever can offer the most coin. I'll never be a Starfleet Captain trying to keep my ship and crew safe. I'll never be a Jedi in the midst of a galactic war.

Now, if people like to play mary/gary sues and they congregate somewhere. To each their own. Im not going to drop in on them and tell them how terrible they are at RPing, Im not going to troll them and falsely report as Ive seen done in the past (STO is notorious for its Anti-RP Fleets that actively target anyone trying to immerse themselves in the game). Im just going to go somewhere else for my RP with other RPers that are more my speed.

Heck at times Ive participated in educating newcomers and old RPers alike on how to RP and how to improve their characters and backstory. Laying out the general rules that most RP groups follow to some extent or another.

Normal RP? No, not generally. Can even be entertaining to watch sometimes.

ERPing in private group chat? Fine by me, as long as I don't have to see it.

Explicit ERPing in public channels? Very much yes, and IMO it shouldn't be allowed.

In my experience the last thing you mentioned is usually done by non-roleplayers, just trolling the masses. Explicit public erp is not something you tend to see in legitimate rp circles.
