Nice post. I haven't heard anyone mention Circle MUDs (a DIKU derivative type of MUD) in awhile, I used to play those quite a bit.
I agree with you on the writing, they do a fantastic job.

Yes, ESO is really, really nifty for us RPG-veterans. Naturally there is still lots of room for improvement, which we are often throwing ideas out for, but compared to many other games I have played... ESO, best ever.
Some people may say they find the stories a bit bland - I really liked them, especially the ones where things change and take a new direction halfways through the quest. And how they often play together to generate a individual "feel" for the region at hand... how so many of the side quests play into the regional main plot, instead of ignoring it...
The environment... is so great looking... I love it how they made all the different regions "feel different" - how the building styles vary widely across the various races, how the dwelves follow the landscape (even if it means there are no lootable dwemer ruins in AD lands) and how they make it worth ones while to just go exploring by hiding treasure chests, mages books and the occasional skyshards in corners of the gameworld...
Of course, the roleplayers among us would wish for some improvements, interactable objects (tavern chairs!) and so on... but who knows, maybe someday...
Gameplay... was a revelation for me. No more staring at a dozend or more cooldown timers while managing my "rotation", but a combat system where paying attention to the -fight- counts! And a system where foresight in chosing your skill combination can mean all the difference between victory or defeat...
The details... like the books... have always been a feature of TES games for as long as I can remember loving them (that would be TES:Morrowind... I started playing with TES:Daggerfall, but it wasn't until Morrowind that I truly fell in love with the series because of the grand backstory painting a vivid and different fantasy universe there...)
No surprise there, really... I came to ESO for the TES lore, and that is what makes me stay when others whine about how the latest rebalancing "ruined" their character and they would quit because they no longer can wipe the floor with all other players since their FotM got nerfed...
(and yes, I did buy the books that collect the ESO in-game book stories too. Just wish they'd print one for the hireling letters as well...)
All in all, ESO not only is great already... but as time goes by, it may become greater yet. As seen with the latest expansions - wrothgar, thieves guild... soon dark brotherhood... all great additions to the game (IC only if you are a gankhappy PvPlayer I guess). And from what one hears... there is some grand and epic tale coming up, likely spread over several DLCs, involving a good deal of conflict between numerous daedric princes... so much more that could come in the future... both in terms of story, and basic game improvements... we shall wait and see, dream and wonder, and hopefully witness more improvements to ESO taking it from amazing to truly superb in the times to come! But among all the games I played, ESO is my all time favorite now, and with none in sight to challenge the title in my mind!
I come from a long line of RPGs. Starting with table top AD&D, the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the old NES, from there moving into Circle MUDs. I had a blast playing all of those games throughout the years. I must say, ESO is amazing. The graphics, the story, the game play. Even the "fetch" quests (usually) have something more than "Get me 10 bear pelts". Coming from miniatures on a table top and text based MMOs, this game is great. The details are fantastic. I haven't read all of the books in the game but the level of detail put into writing that many stories is fantastic. The way many people play this game the books could just read "Two handed plus one" but they don't. They have a story in each and every one of them. On top of that there are the regular books with horror stories, funny stories, "academic" stories. Even the letters I receive from hirelings have a story to them. Whoever is doing all of that writing, good job.

I paid a month on the game and played 5 days, returned to ESO, purchased Thieves Guild, made a new character and loved it ever since... I am kind of done with trying out new online rpgs, because I watch a ton of other people make review videos and they just dont have the same feeling, eso feels a bit in the style of a single player in some way because it looks...clean. Most RPGs look like a complete mess, even when you turn on the damage/healing numbers in ESO , the experience stays clean.
