Long time RPGer - ESO is amazing

I come from a long line of RPGs. Starting with table top AD&D, the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the old NES, from there moving into Circle MUDs. I had a blast playing all of those games throughout the years. I must say, ESO is amazing. The graphics, the story, the game play. Even the "fetch" quests (usually) have something more than "Get me 10 bear pelts". Coming from miniatures on a table top and text based MMOs, this game is great. The details are fantastic. I haven't read all of the books in the game but the level of detail put into writing that many stories is fantastic. The way many people play this game the books could just read "Two handed plus one" but they don't. They have a story in each and every one of them. On top of that there are the regular books with horror stories, funny stories, "academic" stories. Even the letters I receive from hirelings have a story to them. Whoever is doing all of that writing, good job.

Nice post. I haven't heard anyone mention Circle MUDs (a DIKU derivative type of MUD) in awhile, I used to play those quite a bit.

I agree with you on the writing, they do a fantastic job.

Yeah the lore and the possibilities for RPers in this game are amazing.. the "bad" parts are related to pure gameplay aspect like the class system and the fact that the game is "equip based" to the point that with the right equip and a bit of knowledge you can actually solo the most challenging group content.

To someone that does not care about these things at all it's kind of the perfect game

this game has a great rp potential. i like it. loots of emotes too. it can make a conversation much more alive.

I agree as well. I also appreciate the detail and writing in this game. With all the (some justified) complaints that this game gets, not enough people express their appreciation for the many aspects that this game does well.

I played during the beta, and only a couple months after public launch, before all the bugs and other annoyances turned me off to the game. With all the various crafting mats that are in the game right now, back then there were even more (I'm looking at you provisioning). I spent more time managing my inventory than I did actually questing and playing. Also, I had never played an MMO where your bank was shared with all your alts. It was just too much stuff, and never enough storage space, so I walked away.

I rediscovered ESO in February, and I have to say that it's matured really well. All the patches and DLC have made the game what I thought it could be back then. I'm subbed, and I don't foresee myself unsubbing any time soon - especially with the crafting bag coming (I can't wait)! Inventory management is still annoying, but when that crafting bag gets here I will rejoice.

    Thanks ZOS!

It's a wonderful game and RPG. It has its problems in the MMO department. But as far as graphics, lore, world, environment, quests, NPCs, ambience/life etc, RP, variety of gear looks and emotes, goes; it's brilliant.
Frankly the only thing I really want added to the game at this point (apart from lag/disconnecting issues/broken skills) is player housing.
(And I don't even want a sandbox element. Just a phased off area where we can have one of several different 'houses' to decorate with epic stuff we've gathered. Houses can be actual house, stone castle, wood cabin, graaht tree, a cave etc.
Decorations come from quest rewards, treasure hunting style things, bosses and trial rewards etc. And yes, even the crown store. I truly believe BioWare did it perfect in SW:TOR. I've spent countless hours and close to billions of credits making my 5 houses perfect.)

    Sorry. Went way off track

I am just 28, but I have played an LPMud, avalon.mud.de, I think even if people do not mention it, a lot might have experience with this kind of games. Modern games are not even near to the complexity of a MUD yet, but the text-based interface of a MUD is cumbersome for new players, which are not used to it, and so this genre will cease to be sometime in the future.

I agree :) The game is great! started a month ago and loving it so far :) The exploration in this game is just beautiful!

Some quests made me tear up too
like the one in Wayrest - regarding a son and his father :3

    Greetings and well met!

Yes, ESO is really, really nifty for us RPG-veterans. Naturally there is still lots of room for improvement, which we are often throwing ideas out for, but compared to many other games I have played... ESO, best ever.

Some people may say they find the stories a bit bland - I really liked them, especially the ones where things change and take a new direction halfways through the quest. And how they often play together to generate a individual "feel" for the region at hand... how so many of the side quests play into the regional main plot, instead of ignoring it...

The environment... is so great looking... I love it how they made all the different regions "feel different" - how the building styles vary widely across the various races, how the dwelves follow the landscape (even if it means there are no lootable dwemer ruins in AD lands) and how they make it worth ones while to just go exploring by hiding treasure chests, mages books and the occasional skyshards in corners of the gameworld...
Of course, the roleplayers among us would wish for some improvements, interactable objects (tavern chairs!) and so on... but who knows, maybe someday...

Gameplay... was a revelation for me. No more staring at a dozend or more cooldown timers while managing my "rotation", but a combat system where paying attention to the -fight- counts! And a system where foresight in chosing your skill combination can mean all the difference between victory or defeat...

The details... like the books... have always been a feature of TES games for as long as I can remember loving them (that would be TES:Morrowind... I started playing with TES:Daggerfall, but it wasn't until Morrowind that I truly fell in love with the series because of the grand backstory painting a vivid and different fantasy universe there...)
No surprise there, really... I came to ESO for the TES lore, and that is what makes me stay when others whine about how the latest rebalancing "ruined" their character and they would quit because they no longer can wipe the floor with all other players since their FotM got nerfed...

(and yes, I did buy the books that collect the ESO in-game book stories too. Just wish they'd print one for the hireling letters as well... ;) )

All in all, ESO not only is great already... but as time goes by, it may become greater yet. As seen with the latest expansions - wrothgar, thieves guild... soon dark brotherhood... all great additions to the game (IC only if you are a gankhappy PvPlayer I guess). And from what one hears... there is some grand and epic tale coming up, likely spread over several DLCs, involving a good deal of conflict between numerous daedric princes... so much more that could come in the future... both in terms of story, and basic game improvements... we shall wait and see, dream and wonder, and hopefully witness more improvements to ESO taking it from amazing to truly superb in the times to come! But among all the games I played, ESO is my all time favorite now, and with none in sight to challenge the title in my mind!

ZOS makes such a secret out of what is coming in the 2nd half of this year, that I expect a bomb shell at E3 and they might announce something really great to come in the rest of the year. If it would be something smaller, they could have told us already, so I expect something really amazing.

Edit: I took a look at black desert, that is no concurrence to ESO. Some might have a different opinion about it, but I do not like the appearance of female characters there. Too short skirts, stay ups (not that I would not like stay ups, but not combined with a too short skirt) and an overall childish look. IMO child-like avatars do not belong into sexualized clothes, that gives just the wrong signals. That is just disgusting and not my style.

This one hopes that we get Elsweyr. After all what is a little flu plague between the friends yes?

You look how the hairless ones they always avoid answering questions about anything khajiit, there have been no khajiit costumes. It's almost like they are saving all the khajiit stuff for something...

Either that or they are all khajiit hating werewolves. This one would prefer to think of the kinder option though.

Khajiit does not expect to go home until many moons have passed though. She expects first to have to travel to Murkmire and then maybe some sort of Dwemer world.

When Khajiit is able to travel to the Gold Coast and can recruit another apprentice to her team it is likely she will find an Argonian who can make himself useful in Murkmire. Khajiit does not like the sticky, stinky mud on the fur!

Hi @Ballcap ! If you're a rolepplayer you need to stop by here: TESO-RP and meet your tribe. :)

ESO is a rich environment for roleplay though it has not been until recently that ZOS has begun to cater to RPers in any meaningful way. When the barber shop and housing FINALLY get here, then I might agree that this game is REALLY good fro RP.

Nice post! Been here since late Beta, and I totally agree.
I truly hope over time that they fix the problems with PVP, and that that aspect of the game becomes more integrated with the RPG elements. I think it would be nifty if there were quests on the PVE side that actually included excursions to Cyrodiil, which entailed the risk (or necessity) of engaging in PVP play.

I completely agree!!! I went to try out FF14 instead and man was I disappointed... the graphics, most npcs dont even have voice actors!!! I paid a month on the game and played 5 days, returned to ESO, purchased Thieves Guild, made a new character and loved it ever since <3... I am kind of done with trying out new online rpgs, because I watch a ton of other people make review videos and they just dont have the same feeling, eso feels a bit in the style of a single player in some way because it looks...clean. Most RPGs look like a complete mess, even when you turn on the damage/healing numbers in ESO , the experience stays clean.

I tried free2play ones, not a good experience, they are the most expensive kind if you want to do anything interesting in them. And they have the most toxic communities, I have ever seen. And especially korean ones are full of hacks, bots and cheats, I am so happy that ZOS has done a lot to fight bots and hacks, this is worth a whole lot, but you just know how much, if you have ever tried an MMO, where such defenses are not in place. ZOS has done very well in these regards.

I agree, it's nice to see threads praising the game instead of complaining.

What I really enjoy about it is the fact that almost every quest is involving, and the game feels alive. You see the consequences of your actions, you can talk to almost any NPC to see how their feeling and even though these are just quests, you feel like you are making an impact on the world because you can see yourself changing it.

So as much as people like to complain about this or that, I just wanted to help give the game some praise in an area where I don't think it gets much credit, and that is world building, quest design and atmospheres and ambience.
