Honestly, when I bought the merchant and banker I wasn't thinking of guilds banks or repairing gear. I bought them because I was tired of running out of space from drops and then having to destroy items to pick up better items. I've always hated having to run back to a city to deposit all the crafting drops to the bank so I have space again, and destroying items rather than selling them was never my style. I'm fine with buying repair kits. Having instant repair anywhere, even in dungeons without buying a repair kit is kind of cheaty. Maybe adding guild bank to the banker would be nice but overall I'm very happy with what they do.

Update:Yay, they refund me back the 5000 crowns.
They told me it's a one time courtesy, fair enough.
Thank you all!

Can anyone confirm that this works? Can you really bypass the restriction with an add-on?

Based on comments from other users I loaded the auto-repair add-on and used the Crown Store merchant. The add-on does report the items being repaired and the gold being deducted in the chat window, but my gear was not repaired nor gold removed from my inventory. I tested it because I had one item that was completely trashed on my character.
It looks like the add-on triggers are the same with the Crown Store merchant, so it provides the same messaging in the chat window, but this does not appear to be a way around it as far as I can tell. Can't have the Crown Store merchant cutting into Crown Store repair kits I suppose.

Lol. I am afraid they made fun of you. I have already explained it a few times, but since it is my favourite trope and, apparently, ZOS's as well, let me say that:
1) To refund is: To return (money) to (someone); to reimburse . Crowns are not money. You lost your money the moment you bought crowns, not the moment you bought some assistant. Therefore, they did not refund you.
2) Therefore, it is not a courtesy.
To be honest I think both merchant and banker are a bit stupid idea for an assistan. The smuggler not so as it is logical to have a brave and greedy sidekick walking with you and taking your stuff to closest black market for a small cut. It is actually quite well made.
I see no reason though why a banker would like to join me in a crypt filled with undead or what kind of business a merchant would do in Vaults of Madness. And how is that banker able to walk around the world with all your stuff in his pockets? Those must be the biggest pockets ever! (Well actually, the merchant assistant might have bigger ones.)
People complain that the merchant can't repair but if it did, repair kits would become obsolate item and the game would become more or less "pay to win" as people with merchant would have no need to leave a dungeon just becouse their items broke. They are already able to run from dungeon to dungeon hoarding everything and selling it to the merchant who wont even charge anything for following you. This speeds up money making a lot.
Instead of these 2 strange enterpreneurs, they could have made an assistant who could have just carried a few items for us, serving as extra bag space.
And yes, 5K Crowns for an assistan is a bit too much.
