near 5 hours of down time to come back on, jump into pvp and lag my balls off.. what were you even doing the entire time? you fix the smallest problems and call it progress while ignoring game breaking aspects, when will you fix the *** you caused in your game and stop stalling with *** distractions like more dlc, smh -_-
Of course, had you done a modicum of research, you would have seen that they were only performing maintenance on the Sign-in, Account System, and Crown Store for the Xbox/PS4.

But had you done that research, there would have been no point to the pissy tirade on the Forums...

i never said what it was for.. this is my exact point, maintenance for pointless problems within the game or problems that stop players buying things are top priority while they ignore what the players tell them
^ Further proof that you have zero knowledge about coding... anything, or maintaining an online system of any type.

You have no idea what they were fixing/preventing in the Sign-in system or account system. But to shut the servers off for five hours just to anger @itzeffect ? Try to at least act intelligent.
no i don't know why they took it off but i can tell already after being back on the game it doesn't seem to be any of the real problems i or anyone i know was having, back up ZOS all you want but it will get you nowhere, they don't care about the players, they simply don't
Of course, it could also be that the server issues causing the lag in Cyrodiil are far more serious than a mere five-hour fix could take care of. Not to mention the other associated systems that they have to make sure to not break while fixing said lag.

But even while they're working on that (and they are working on it), there are still other parts of the game and other systems that need to be maintained and patched.

That's what this downtime was for. Some of the other stuff.

I understand that the lag is frustrating, but you and people like you think that you can just scream about it on the Forums, and the Support team can somehow just snap their fingers and the problem goes away.

These types of major fixes need to be fully mapped out and planned in-depth before ever touching a line of code. The fact that you're asking for everything else to be put by the wayside until the lag is fixed in one aspect of game play also shows that you know nothing about how an online company is run. The loss of revenue from putting everything aside until @itzeffect is happy with the levels of lag in the PvP portion (and make no mistake, there will always be certain levels of lag in Cyrodiil. There's no way to excise it completely) would kill the game.

So calling something you don't even have a passing knowledge of "pointless", is in itself pointless.

Just because they didn't fix the one thing you wanted, does not make the maintenance pointless.

I'm not saying lag is the one and only problem and i demand results, i am saying we have yet to see any real proof they are working on the big problems in this game, also i am not alone in this argument, they are losing tons of players due to *** like this, they are just trying to make as much money out of this game as possible then dump it and work on their next game to suck the wallets from every gamer
ANd yet two... three more unfounded claims with nothing to back them up.

I'm done. You're still in your frustrated/pissy mood, and you're not listening to sensible explanations.

I refuse to talk to a wall.

what is it that makes you think you know all and can talk down to others? take your head out your ass and realise there's more to this world than your opinion
Because I write code all day long and manage the server side systems of a suite of online systems. Have for twenty years.

okay so that does not mean you are above all others
No, that's the narcissist in me.

What my career does do is allow me to point out that you're calling server and system maintenance "pointless", yet have no idea whatsoever what goes into doing it. And you're complaining more that they didn't halt all other business operations just to fix the server lag.

Further; as @MoeCoastie has posted above:

so basically, you just took this opportunity, that has no relation to your point, to point that out...again?

"hey guys, we're patching the login servers"

"wtf?!?! you patch the login servers and there's still lag?!?!"

    <stands on soapbox>
<cut and paste generic lag complaint post>

gets a bit old that someone has to always shamelessly plug that same old song in almost every post no matter what the subject

maybe if it is complained about enough, we will have results

ZoS mentions the lag issue on almost every ESO Live episode. In a recent episode, they detailed their plan and the steps they are taking, have taken, and are planning to take to try to solve the lag issue. Along with a plan to improve the technical side of the server, they are also trying to implement abilities and gear to try to change the way people pvp currently. They hope both these layers of their plan combine to help improve the performance and stability of their servers.

Whether you like their plan or not, you cannot say they dont have one, that they dont care, or that they are doing nothing.

Zeni has communicated as much as they possibly can about how server lag (especially in Cyrodiil) is the foremost thing on their plate as far as fixes are concerned. As I said, it's a HUGE job (I know from personal experience), and they're working on it as fast as they can without breaking the rest of the game irreparably.

But no, none of that seems to be good enough for you.

So why don't you cut through the pretentious s***, and tell us exactly what you'd like them to do. Because apparently what they're doing will never be enough for you.

Lol at thinking the lag is foremost on their list.

Lol at thinking almost 2 year is not enough time for them to fix it.

Lol at them acknowledging it every ESO live and yet it is getting worse.

Lol at defending their lack of professionalism and leadership with actually fixing the issue.

You mean the title and post that the entire thread revolves around? You know, the one where you heavily imply that any downtime that doesn't fix lag is "pointless"?

Or do you possibly mean the other replies of your in this very thread. Those same replies where you personally state that any fix that isn't for the Cyrodiil lag is "pointless" in your eyes.

Don't try to backtrack your way out of this now.

There's been plenty of information and confirmation that this is not only an issue at the top of their list of major issues that need fixing, they're also working towards getting a fix in place.

Bigger problems need more time to fix. Sometimes much more time is needed than anyone (including the Devs) would like. But you can't seem to understand that even while they're fixing the lag and server stability, they are still working on fixes for other issues and maintaining other systems.

But no, none of that's good enough. Because you can't see or even know what needs to be done to keep this game running and functioning, it must be "pointless".

Because apparently what they're doing will never be enough for you.

your essay is too long its useless
if ZOS working on fixing PvP lag as necessary, it will be fixed, patches will be rolled weekly/monthly
but they are barely doing a thing, however, did you take a look at the crown store? there is also a new DLC coming
with few bugs that will be fixed in the DLC after it

The thing I miss most from GW2 is the patches. Log out, download patch, play. Takes 10 minutes maximum usually. They even added a way to download a portion and be able to play while downloading the remainder.

Oh well back to watching Netflix.

So - from a layperson - what does it generally take to deal with server latency?

Is it a hardware issue, or does it have to do with the software's ability to render a lot of peoples' characters within a single space?

The reason I'm asking is that I've noticed a MASSIVE difference in my gameplay since Thieves' Guild went live. I've been playing since launch at 45-50ms (the same holds true for other MMOs I play). However, after TG dropped it shot up dramatically. I'm now sitting at 85-115ms latency. Occasionally I'll get a few seconds where I get to play around the 65-ish mark, but that's rare.

And that's PvE. In PvP since TG I'm looking at 400+ms redbars. Not fun at all. Keep in mind that I can play at max graphical settings while maintaining 75+ FPS, so I'm pretty sure my hardware is okay. ;)

But I'd be interested to see what you think ZOS will do to help the issues most folks seem to be having with lag. Thanks in advance!

The fact that you're asking for everything else to be put by the wayside until the lag is fixed in one aspect of game play also shows that you know nothing about how an online company is run.

I refer to this as the, "No fixing potholes until we win the war on terror," tirade. :D

It sounds more like a concession of defeat than a plan. Buying more server hardware is what is needed. By making the focus changing the way people play it seems sort of like they are throwing in the towel on the massive alliance vs. alliance PVP that ESO was built on.

Plus these new gear sets just introduce a while new "meta" of exploits and annoyances to chase.

But you're right, not agreeing with the plan doesn't mean they don't have one.

    Maintenance needs to happen.
I don't really know how it works, but I see it kinda like a defrag.
I figure as long as it doesn't take an entire day, it's going ok.
