    I'm sure in the long run, a larger player base would do the company better. Their product longevity would increase tenfold.

    Why not? when all populations are 3bars, performances are amazing and we get great fights anyway without searching too much. This is what matters.

    Cyrodiil was designed with a much larger population capacity in mind, the time it takes to find fights is already brutal and tedious. It's all about proportion. If they reduce the size of Cyro, get at me with lower pops, but as it is now I'd like to see them go through the coding inside and out to see what is causing (and increasing) latency with every patch. Sure we could keep lowering pops until all lag is gone, but at what point do we say it's not working anymore? It's been lowered, what, 4 times now? That's already a drastic decrease.

    i think people dont realize that having 300 people on screen is what causes the lag..
    The fps problem is not in zos end, get a better machine that can handle 2000 spell being cast at the same time + process shadows and textures... my pc doesnt handle it so i lower the setting to low when im pvping...

    The only reason they're related is because usually when you have a lot of visuals to process, there's also that many more packets being sent back and forth.

    This is likely because of a particle system leak, which tends to show its ugly head in more intense PVP scenarios. The system itself has been completely rewritten and thoroughly vetted for these kinds of issues. It is going out with the Thieves Guild patch, in addition to the new 64-bit client.

    So @ZOS_AlexTardif is this possible related to this issue that a lot of people get? Slow FPS drop over time and a locked out processor core.

    the slow FPS drop could very well be the same issue, though your case seems quite extreme for what we'd normally expect, because you describe (in great detail, thank you!) that it doesn't matter if the scene is intensive or not.

    However, we can confirm that the old particle system was indeed single-threaded, which lines up with what you were experiencing with one core cranking up so high. The new system coming with the patch is fully multithreaded, and we've made improvements to effect loading in general to increase speed. If you still have this same issue after the patch, it could be something unrelated to effects, or there may be something deeper causing the problem. Do check back and let us know whether or not this patch makes things better for you!
    Will this rewrite also fix the bug where the majority of effects won't show up anymore and just their glow is visible after a big fight?

    Yes, that was unfortunately a result of the same leak. Like the other issue, the fix was tested extensively to make sure that effects would still appear even after running all night in PvP areas. Depending on your game settings, or if you're in a particularly particle-heavy scenario, you may still encounter times when certain effects that we've deemed lower-priority won't appear sometimes. This is because of caps on our number of allowed particle systems on-screen, which we have in place so that it doesn't use too much memory, CPU, or GPU resources. However, the issue you're experiencing is definitely because of the leak, and that won't happen anymore after the patch.

    Other fixes as a result of this particle work include fixes to certain ability effects that would stick around forever after weapon swaps (even if the ability itself was deactivated), and effects like Expert Hunter appearing incorrectly when swapping to a different weapon type.

    The data files used are the same for both clients. You will only need to download around 300mb for the 64-bit client. (Plus the multiple-gig TG DLC patch)

    yes the new particle system is indeed on PTS already. It appears to have solved the particle-related frame-rate issues and particle effects over time not appearing, however as you've noticed, there are some other framerate issues going on. We are investigating this and fixing those issues piece by piece between now and when Thieves Guild goes live. Stay tuned! Also do note that some issues are specifically related to "Ultra" graphics settings, so if you're currently running on Ultra on PTS, it may be worth scaling back your settings and trying again after each PTS patch to see when it improves.

    Was bored at work today and found this; never read about it before today. Interesting, but still getting really bad FPS in large PvP battles.

    The only thing that I agree with is the population cap and even with that I would rather cut a much lower percentage than 50.

    the FPS drops issue is real. i had/have it sometimes, and not only in PvP. i have it in large cities sometimes such as deeshan, grahtwood.. also in vMA aswell. solution is either clicking "escape" key on keyboard or crash the game and re start it if that did not work.

    and alot of other fancy hardware *** that guarantees me to play any game on ultra for now and some years ahead.

    i play eso on mixed medium and high quality (mostly medium) since i spend most of my time in PvP.
    i did get some FPS problems but they were fixed for me in some patch. and im not surprised that people still have FPS issues. when loading screen were fixed for about everyone, i still have over 5 mins loading screen in Cyrodiil only if i am a member of a group
    so basically. i must play PvP solo most of the time or be near some groups for group play - but not inside the group - for what? to have some proper PvP !!

    Edit: My FPS is usually fine, but there's random instances where it just tanks. Those instances are what concern me. Sometimes its at Northern High Rock or Aleswell when no one is around or skills being cast, other times at an emp dethrone with extreme particle effects. FPS isn't really something I have much of a problem with compared to the absurd bar swap timing and server latency that happens nightly.

    The FPS drops you mention are indeed seemingly random and have no apparent cause. However, I did notice them happen a lot when solo-ing a resource and flipping the flag.

    Apart from FPS drops, a new thing is these 'freezes' that seem to happen in busy fights in PvP. My entire game will lock up for a few seconds before continuing. Great for game play.

    i dont see the players moving, i see them teleporting
    when i click "W" or "S" or whatever key, my character do not move forward or backward. it starts to moonwalk forward or backward

    20% less people and thats it.

    I know the caps used to be so high! Back when the game worked and groups like Hijinx could run their pain trains with out the server having a seizure.

    I would fear having the population cap lowered because there would be even fewer conflicts on the map. Fights are already hard to find these days if you don't want to go to the 40v40 at Chalm / Nikel / Alessia bridge.

    I would love to see no lag, no AoE caps, no VD, no proxy, and mild dynamic ulti gen. This game would be INCREDIBLE.
    They spent like 6+ years developing an MMO without any kind of built-in protection against cheating of all kinds and then after release implemented some *** that first broke PvP completely (it honestly was like 3-5fps for everyone) and later left it in the state it's currently in.

    Go figure.
