Well,.. I found the three items needed and it registered that I had them. Then when I went to leave,I was seen and killed. Now the damn quest says I need to find the same three things again. It took me forever and ever to find those three items.
Plus,it is actually costing me more than the payment I will get in the end.
I have never abandoned a quest yet,but I must say I am close.

I always carry those Counterfeit Pardons on me when I'm doing those.
Make yourself some Invis pots, that can help, too.

I also practiced at getting away from the guards after reading some advice on here and they rarely manage to kill me now if I do get caught.

Abandoning the quest won't hurt anything. You'll be able to pick up another one at the Tip Board. Might get a better one even.

    Good Luck :)

Wayrest Castle is a fine place for liberating many things easily - and very near the Outlaw Refuge. Maybe go and build up a nice supply of liberated items from there first?

Taking things from drawers and cupboards - the right drawers and cupboards - tends to be much less risky than the picking of the pockets.

You can steal the items in any map. You don't have to stay in Hew's Bane.

Remember you need to launder them before turning the quest in. She wants "clean" items.

Also let me just say that some of the stuff that Countess say is really creepy.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

You can steal them from anywhere unless it tells you a specific area. Also you can get them from Troves sometimes. I have some of those items saved.

The items are stolen goods, so as with any other stolen item, until you launder them, they are vulnerable.

This one will give you her top secret list of the three best places she thinks have many items unwatched

Wayrest castle - don't bother with the throne room though - too many witnesses - no witnesses at all in the king's bedroom ...

The room at the top of the inn in Dragonstar, Craglorn (one khajiit and many lootable chests)

The basement barracks area in the castle in Wrothgar - again many chests.

You have to get all the items home and safely laundered - if the guards catch you then all the precious items are gone!

That is why this one thinks that the looting of drawers and trunks is a safer bet for this quest than the picking of the pockets.

Also anything you save and launder can be used for a future quest so even if you think you don't need it now launder it so you have a nice pile of ready laundered items (that the guards won't take) to choose from in future.

Completing other Kari's Tip Board quests always gives you a box of already laundered items, so spare some of these. Heists also give you laundered items as rewards.

Try to spare items from a few different categories. Like children's toys, euhmm.. wardrobe accessories, devices. Items that have more than one category have the chance to be more useful.

According to the latest edit on UESP -

The requested objects vary as follows:

    Drinkware, Utensils, and Dishes
    Cosmetics, Linens, and Wardrobe Accessories
    Ritual Objects and Oddities
    Writings and Maps

Hope this helps, good luck! Personally I think it's the easiest quest of them all :)

If I remember rightly, you don't actually have to steal any items for The Covetous Countess if you already have them. The "stealing" entry is a hint for how to get the items; the objective itself is to obtain clean items. So if you already have them, all you need to do is launder them. If you already have laundered items (eg, from Laundered Shipments), then you only need to deliver them.

    THIS.

Also, you should consider these sets for thieving:
3 piece Nightshade (body, 1 weapon max)
5 piece Night Mother (jewlery, weapons, 1 body max)
4 piece Bahraha (4 medium body = for heists) OR 4 piece Serpent/s Spirit (4 medium body = regular thieving)

Combined with Legerdemain and TG passives, stealing is like taking sweet rolls from milksops.

The Dark Stalker passive from the vampire skill tree does the same thing as 5 piece bonus from Night Silence.
It is a waste of 5 slots IMO.

But yeah, if you are a WW and don't want to cure, or for some reason you don't want to become a vamp, Night Silence might be a good set to go to.
Not the LA version, mind you.
You need someone to craft you MA Night Silence for body pieces.

I just hand onto the Laundered shipments and stolen shipments you get as a reward for the other quests, then open them up until I find what i need. Even without them, usually I steal such volume that at least half of my free space is stolen good, making it very likely I will have the items needed for the quest.
