Would you still play this game if it wasn't based in the Elderscrolls Universe?

I wonder if this thread worries ZOS for it shows that this game is so mediocre and lackluster if it was never affiliated with Elder Scrolls it would flop

Many of us said nothing like that.

I said I would not have tried the game because I am not an MMO person and there are plenty of single player games to play through. I would have finished The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls by now. I wasn't looking for an MMO to play.

ESO is excellent. I love the design and it is far from 'lackluster'. But there are many excellent games I haven't played. I haven't played GTA 5 yet. I've never played Diablo 3 or Starcraft II. I've never played WoW or GW2. Or MGS V. Or the Metro games. I have been interested in trying all of these games, but I never got around to it because I was playing other games.

Played too many rush to end game mmos. I found out that these games are not the type of games I wanted to play. So I gave up on mmos. The first reason I pick up Elder scrolls online was one because I like the lore of the Elder scrolls series and the world. The second reason was that it was coming to consoles. At first I was not going to get the game because it was a mmo. I bought and played this game for the lore and world and stayed for the lore and world.

I bought the game for the Elder Scrolls name.

I've been playing it for almost 2 years because I enjoy it.

At this point you could call it the Elmer Fudd Chronicles and I would still enjoy playing ESO just as much. ;)

Yes, I would still be playing
I looked forward to ESO because it was an Elder Scrolls game & I have really enjoyed every elder scrolls game I have played. So I did purchase this game because it was Elder Scrolls... I didn't (at the time) want an MMO... I wanted basically Skyrim with a new story, new lands & co-op play... so ESO was very close to exactly what I wanted. I had no interest in PVP & didn't play any PVP till after I'd been doing the PVE content for over a year!

Eventually I tried the PVP & freakin' loved it! :D & I still love playing PVP. It has it's frustrations due to ping & FPS issues but you can get similar issues with most online games from my experience.

Now after almost 2 years, it could be called whatever & I would still play it. It's pure bonus that it is an Elder Scrolls game with all the very cool lore. It's a great game & has held my attention longer than any game in the past except Quake. Another year & it will be in the number 1 position! :D

I wasn't even going to buy it with The Elder Scrolls in the title because when I saw MMO and no first person I thought "nah that's not for me". To my knowledge it wasn't till they announced it for Xbox (or console) that they even showed first person play with the Dragon Knight chain pull. First thing that popped into my head then was "GET OVER HERE!!", Up till then I think it was going to be 3rd person only. (edit: I wound up never playing in 1st person after I got into it)

Anyways I applied to the beta program in June I think it was. I told them I had no intention of getting this game unless they convinced me otherwise,,,, I had an invite within a week I think it was and also got a PO invite in October of the same year.

Oh, one more thing,,, I've been playing ever since, all though I haven't done the 20 hour weekend days in quite a while.

To be honest, I may or may not have. I primarily purchased the game, because I'm a fan of the Elder Scrolls franchise (thanks to Skyrim). But, I also wanted to get my hands on a MMORPG that I could play on console. While Final Fantasy was an option, I choose this as I liked the promos I had seen. Not to mention, I liked the direction it was headed at. Thus my purchase.

Honestly, it is difficult to say. The Elder Scrolls title drew me to the game. However, initial reviews were horrible and I was warned away from it by buddies. A year or so later it launched on console and I was hearing much better things about it.

The Elder Scrolls title got my interest, but the timing was good as I was looking for a new game to migrate to and it seemed to fit the bill even without the title.

So really, I can't be sure if i would have picked it up if not for the ES series.

Oblivion got me into The Elder Scrolls. I was amazed on how rich the story was. I probably wouldn't had even considered joining if.. well, the bugs in the beta were never fixed (as to why there was so much negativity back then).
And if this wasn't based on the series, I would had never played it.

I honestly don't know. The first ES game I played was oblivion. The only reason I bought oblivion was because a friend at the time gave it an absolutely glowing review. I found oblivion to have the worst "stock" gameplay mechanics of any game I had ever tried. The leveling system was so poorly thought out that it actually fought you. You had to use a certain skill for a specific amount of time and level it up in such a way to get the desired max attributes. If you messed up, your character was screwed. The game did have one huge saving grace. It was a single player game and was easily moddable which meant I could change whatever I wanted. This was huge! I would even go so far to say that the ability to mod the game was probably what kept so many people interested in it. The ability to mod certainly paved the way for skyrim.

Skyrim was vastly improved over oblivion in terms of mechanics however it was still a horrible stock game. The females looked and moved like men. The animations were horrible. There was a gastly facial texture malfunctions and silly mechanics. Thank goodness for mods!

My biggest reservation coming into TESO was the fact it was an online game. Online takes modding off the table. This also meant we would be 100% reliant on the developers of TESO to make the game interesting, fulfilling and entertaining. Coming into beta I felt that they actually did an "OK" job. More so, the developers at the time gave me the impression that they openly wanted player feedback and would action it and that is ultimately why I bought the game. It was the hope for what it could be mixed with how much fun I had had playing a "modded" skyrim or oblivion. 2 years on and I feel that's not really panned out so well for them and not for the lack of trying.

He who controls the flow of money controls everything and Zenimax does not control the flow of money. They, like all companies, require a sufficient flow of money to produce a quality product. Without that flow, a level of insanity works its way through a business. It's exactly the same as taking a fish and tossing it on the beach. It starts flopping around gasping for air. Then, its minor systems start to shut down in an attempt to preserve its life followed by its major systems.

I choose my games for the lore, not for the game. I went for ESO because of the elder scrtolls universe, because of the dunmer lore I learned to love in TES:Morrowind, because of the lands in the TES games I adored (Well, not TES:Daggerfall, that wasn't so great with its constant "falling through dungeon walls" feature and old style grafics... I mean, it was okay for its time, but did not impress me. Morrowind is what got me truly hooked on the TES series...) and because of the rich background I played through in earlier TES games.

Without the lore, I'd not have given the game a second glance...

It's that way for me for all games I tried... be it "Age of Conan" or "Star Trek Online" - I go there for the background, not for the game, and I stay there if I have fun playing.

Same for any future games that might come up. They could have the best, most perfectly balanced game system in the hstory of gamiong, but if they didn't have a background that caught my interest, I would not bother.

Not that I haven't been interested in trying MMOs before. I had heard so many good things about GW2 at launch that I considered trying that in the past. I actually installed WoW like last week just because it gets mentioned so much here and I tried the initial quests for a few minutes. Geez, what a horrible UI. I am assuming that the newer expansions clean the game up. I liked Warcraft 3 a lot so I thought I might enjoy the WoW story, but it is hard to get past that UI and the dated graphics.

It is likely that I would have returned to solely playing single player games if I wasn't looking forward to visiting all the other zones in Tamriel.
No. It said Elder Scrolls in the title and I had been duped. Loved the character creation though 10/10 for that. Story was good, lovely scenery got to meet some creatures of lore and I thought it would have some freedom like single player games only with a multiplayer element. In this game I have found that you have to rely on others to help you. The classes are restrictive and so are some racial passives especially if you want a great avatar that can manage enemies. This is my first and last MMO I will ever play as I never knew how MMOs played. I prefer single player gameplay due to having more freedom in your abilities. I made a mistake and boy, did I pay for it.

First MMO and Firor says he can turn you into an online gamer with ESO.
It’s really up to you to figure out how you want to play it, as we don’t enforce a play style one way or the other. In fact, ESO has been super-successful at taking gamers not used to massive online games, introducing them to the concepts of group play by making it fun and optional, and turning them into online gamers.

I also don't know what game he is playing but I had to pick a play style when I created my toon.

He said "we don't enforce a play style" - he did not say, you would not have to choose an initial class and race - still, those choices do not limit you, you can still use any weapon you like and any armor you like - just class abilities are limited to their specific class. So he is right, the game does not enforce a play style.

Not necessarily - it just shows, that someone who would not have the "Elder Scrolls" banner available, would have to do a whole lot more PR and deliver a much better service than ZOS does, to be equally successful with it.

I would not have played if friends did not coerced me into it. I am a big Morrowind fan, and was afraid of how a TES MMO would turn into.

Turns out, I was right. In my opinion (I said, IN MY OPINION, I know lots of people who disagree), the lore was butchered to fit the MMO standards. As far as I'm concerned, this is a an Elder Scrolls only because of it's title, and a few names and places.
And I think even the MMO aspects of this game are kind of a failure too. Or at least, used to be for a long time. It's slowly getting better. And better late than never.

But as a matter of fact, I've met wonderful people I'm happy to call friends (violins, flowers, and ponies everywhere ! here's a bucket)

And as much as I complain, I'm still having fun. Though I probably would not without my guild. But as long as I am eager to log in, do stuff and laugh with my guildies, it means it's a good game in my books.

But definitely a terrible TES game :D
What? Lead? Me? No, no, no. No leading. Bad things happen when I lead. We get lost, people die, and the next thing you know I’m stranded somewhere without any pants.

I probably wouldn't have heard of it, or if I did, wouldn't have considered it unless a friend introduced me to it. I've only ever played one other MMO, and I'm not really into the whole multi-player stuff too much, it's fun sometimes though, with friends.

That said, if I did get introduced to the game, and it was essentially the same, just not TES, but still similar concepts, I'd probably have liked the game for awhile, but I probably wouldn't have stayed with it for too long.

The fact it's TES was what got me obsessed interested in it in the first place. If it weren't anything to do with TES, then I'm sorry to say I probably wouldn't even have given it a second look.

MMOs fascinate me, and the only other MMO I've really gotten into was SWTOR (and that was largely because of peer pressure rather than brand recognition; I'd never actually seen Star Wars until very recently).

That isn't to say I don't love the game, 'cause I do. I just probably wouldn't have played it if it didn't have the TES connection. The lore dumps, quests, characters, and exploration are just what I'd expect from a TES game, and I don't think I'll be leaving any time soon.
