Would you still play this game if it wasn't based in the Elderscrolls Universe?

Say the game was based in some arbitrary universe, with unheard of races and guilds, but essentially the same game. Woudl you still be playing? Would you have played initially?

If the game was not in the TES universe, I would still play it because of massive PvP. That was the reason I bought it.

If the game was released without PvP (ie only PvE) I would not have bought it, or played it for a short while (after I did all quests there was nothing left in PvE land)

Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

    I don't know.

I'm a big fan of Morrowind and Skyrim was decent - once you modded your way around their broken implementation of magic. So it being TES was a big draw initially. But then they announced classes, skill point cap etc. etc. and....

It's TES lore and look - which are nice - but lacks the freedom of character development which was one of the main things I loved about the single-player games. Classes. Not insignificant racial bonuses. Etc. And things like spending half an hour each day shuffling stuff back and forth between alts, the banality of horse feeding and character creation woes (not looking like they do in the creator + deletion limit) did make me quit early on.

I suppose it being TES was part of the reason I came back to finish the story. Which is excellent. Valenwood was delightful and the bosmer certainly aren't just the typical Tolkien'esque elf-ripoffs.

No. The Elder Scrolls title drew me to it. Plus this is my first MMO of this kind. Already having prior knowledge of the lore and universe from the other games made it a bit easier for me.

Voted wrong. How do I undo that?

Anyway, no, would not even have bought it. Maybe I would have given it a try if it didn't require you to buy it first, but I'd never spend money on this product if it was not Elder Scrolls.

Hard to say, but the fact that this is Elder Scrolls makes a huge difference for me. That's why i was interested in this game in the first place.
I love questing and exploring in ES world, which i probably woudn't enjoy so much in other setting.

This is a strange question because if it wasn't based on the Elder Scrolls Universe, it would be a different game entirely. There's no way to know my answer...but my bet is no because it most likely just wouldn't be as good a game if it hadn't been done by these guys in this universe.

No. It said Elder Scrolls in the title and I had been duped. Loved the character creation though 10/10 for that. Story was good, lovely scenery got to meet some creatures of lore and I thought it would have some freedom like single player games only with a multiplayer element. In this game I have found that you have to rely on others to help you. The classes are restrictive and so are some racial passives especially if you want a great avatar that can manage enemies. This is my first and last MMO I will ever play as I never knew how MMOs played. I prefer single player gameplay due to having more freedom in your abilities. I made a mistake and boy, did I pay for it.

It really depends - ESO is special in many ways, for example the mix of modern society values with a medieval style world, which is in comparison to real medieval times clean and orderly and not plagued by poverty and diseases. A multi-cultural society, which nevertheless has it's specific local flavors, a society with gender- and race-equality and it's open-minded.

So if there would be no Elder Scrolls, I would eventually get used to another RPG-style fantasy world, but it would have to have those values (pointed out above) that I could feel comfortable in it. Hm, but I would really miss Khajiit and Argonians. I can get used to another cat race - I got used to Firan in Archeage, but that game was full of hacks, bots and exploits and if you think ZOS doesn't care, you have not experienced Trion yet, those doing Archeage, there you hit really rock bottom.

Really? ESO is actually an awesome MMO, and as a console gamer you wouldn't know just how awesome as you have nothing to compare it to. You're being spoiled and you don't even know it, all the time dragging your heels sullenly across the playfield :*

I would still be playing GW2, as I'm fond of that universe as well and wouldn't have left for a universe I have no attachment to.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

      Meet my characters:
      Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

It would have been just another generic sword and board fantasy game, and we have plenty of those all ready on the market.. And this game is lucky to have such a loyal fan base, most games with this many bugs would already have been totally free to play and getting close to pulling the plug. I enjoy the Elder Scrolls world bugs and all, glad it was not another generic game.

If I would have looked at this game had it been generic, the only thing that might have interested me would have been the AvAvA, done enough small scale pvp and battle grounds to last two life times, really bored with that.

Only reason I started playing ESO was because I can play as khajiit. If it was another universe I would probably have downloaded Wildstar instead (assuming I would be playing an MMORPG)

Glad I did start this though. It is really fun if you dissregard the research system for crafting and the riding skill system

I avoided MMORPGs for two decades because of their reputation and sub fees. The B2P/F2P trend with P2W cash shops as the sub-based model went into decline didn't improve my opinion or increase my interest. The only reason I finally gave MMORPGs a chance was that there was an Elder Scrolls version in Beta and I was stuck at home after major surgery. I doubt I would have heard of this game, let alone paid for it, if it hadn't been part of a game franchise I follow closely (Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Mass Effect).
