Holy, so many extremely smart and educated people :) Im tired of being a grunt and going from one shi t y manual labor job to another, or being sick and unable to do said shi t y manual labor job. I really wanna just work from my computer, or a computer. But im in my early 30s so I think I may be stuck in this endless loop, any advice for a way into something different?

Smart and educated? You know we just paid some company a butt load of money just so we can sit in some room where some guy/girl teaches us how to read a book in hopes that one day that company may give us a piece of paper. That way we tell people that we're smart, educated, etc. You want to become more intelligent? Just go to a library and rent out topics that interest you without having to pay thousands of dollars. Also there's no shame in hard labor man. You're a harder worker, which is more than I can say for most folks.

Wait, folklorist is an actual thing that people can be? I feel like that would be absolutely fascinating...

Agree with the others, education is important if you wish to get out of what youre doing and into a different field. Or even if you dont wish to switch jobs, it still doesnt hurt to learn a second trade. Also, I really dont believe youre ever too old to learn..
This said, Im a grease monkey (automotive mechanic for those not familiar with the term) and do side work in computer repair (home and business). But I am also currently in school learning pharmacology, and I will tell you that I started school older than my early 30s ;)

I agree with that - information age is the triple-L age - life-long-learning - even having masters is just the start, not the end of being educated. It is just like a tool kit, you got the tools, now use them to learn even more about nature/life whatever. In the industrial age people could still get to a state where they were done learning. The same does not hold true for the information age and even less for the upcoming Biotech/Nanotech age - it is nearly there and it will change the world even more than the information age did. But it will include a lot more learning than ever before - a whole new world is to discover, its awesome.
Totally true. ABL: Always Be Learning.

That doesn't have to mean taking courses (although often it does), it can also mean taking advantage of opportunities to get exposure to different things at work outside of your current job. Seek out chances to job shadow in other departments, try to find out why things are done the way they are in the roles of those you interact with instead of just finding out how they are done, etc.

I've worked for the same company for 20 years (it started out just as the job to pay for my University - I was a teller!) in a lot of different roles in different departments. A large part of the reason why I'm good at my current job (and why I got it in the first place - and the same can be said of my last few jobs) is because throughout that time and the different jobs I've had in the company I've always been actively learning about other parts of the company, how everything works together, etc. Now I advise the ELT and the board of directors to help guide them to make the right decisions about where the company should be focusing, and where we should be putting on the brakes :)

If I'd have to start over, I'd start to learn IT / programming.

It does not need a long education, you can learn it by yourself, and you can start in small. I'd say one should start with Python. In my former job (which I get frustrated with), I started to learn the basics, but I dropped the stuff as I get my current one.

The "only" problem is that not everyone has the way of thinking that programming requires.

The "only" problem is that not everyone has the way of thinking that programming requires.

There is not just one way to think about programming - take a look at "lambda the ultimate" on the web, they discuss several features of programming and programming languages all the time. There are so many ways to deal with this issue and the last words are not spoken yet nor thought about. Programming is still in an infant state. I, as a bioinformatician, am looking at nature and see why nature has not anything like our computers or our programming - why?- Because it does not scale well, when you have millions or billions of "cores" - our method is a dead end road - we have to learn from nature how to compute in an environment, which has millions, billions or even trillions of independent cores - and how to orchestrate them is even more what we can learn from nature. This is what I am after, to learn from nature how to do it - why?- because it proven works and is chaos-stable, because it evolved and wasn't engineered. it is highly fault tolerant and self-repairing to a degree.

We have not done anything interesting in programming yet - the best is still to come, once we will have learnt how to do it. Our computers fail when they have to deal with more than just trivial NP problems for example, while nature deals with them all the time and gets to solutions in a timely manner - our computers are still incapable of doing that in a timely manner.

I'm an ironworker by trade and have built/helped build many things in my years, but things changed when my daughter was born and her mother bailed. I could no longer do my regular job as it was always hours away and I'd have to do 10 in 4 out or something, couldn't do that with people who need me here. I took the first job I could find in the *** small town I live in and have been stuck there doing random different things, sandblasting/paint prep and whatnot. I *** hate it lol, just thought I'd try and gather some insight on how people did it differently
Started a couple months ago and am in love with the game, fee free to add me on xbox one if your looking for people to play with. Cant wait to learn this game inside and out, see yall in there

I am a professional Voice Over Actor/Artist. I have a studio here at home where I do all of my work. My voice has been on TV and radio, short films, youtube videos, websites, answering machines, audio books (including erotica), and I have been known to impregnate everyone listening (guys and girls lol) when I join a teamspeak channel and people hear me for the first time lol... This is true. I can't tell you how many times someone new hears my voice in a teamspeak and something crazy comes out of their mouth about it. It's hilarious :) I have even done a few voiceovers for guilds in this game because of people hearing me in TS.

I was a DJ for over 20 years and am retired now. I worked radio and clubs/private events. I have met lots of famous people thanks to that gig.

I am also involved in MLM (multi level marketing) and get a paycheck every Monday. It is something I never thought I would be involved in. I started doing it in 2012 and with the power of things like Facebook and YouTube I now have over 7500 people on my team. It isn't easy. You have to work hard to keep people motivated and only a small percentage of people are successful at doing something like this. Lucky for me, I am one of them.

I used to work for Boeing. I built what was called the V-22 Osprey. It is half airplane, half helicopter. Look it up. It is very cool.

Now you know a little bit more about me. I enjoyed reading about everyone else. Thanks!

Congratulation on your success with MLM - my partner, who has 2 venture capital companies, which raise money for projects using MLM, says, that just 1 out of 200 who try to do this kind of job, are actually capable of being successful in it.

Edit.: Btw the Osprey is called a tilt-rotor aircraft - half airplane/half helicopter is not really what it is, it cannot land by auto-rotation like a helicopter when an engine fails for example - it is neither one nor the other.

There are a lot of jobs, which depend on that you are capable to "do" the job and not just "try" to do it - like pilots, surgeons and so on. You have to be confident about yourself to be able to "do" it, and it is expected from you, that you are capable to "do" your job, not just "try" to do it. Having this "try" in your mind, will hinder you to "do" what is required, when it gets tough.

So there is real wisdom in Yoda's words.
