RIP Kena on DoT builds

Ok so I have been testing Kena for an hour on Mammoths trying to get the rotation down, but it kept failing to proc for me.

It would proc nearly always if I did LA>EB>La.

it would proc nearly always if I did LA>PL>LA

It would proc nearly always if I did LA>VB>LA

But it would not proc if I did a rotation VB>LA>EB>LA>PL>LA.

So I started thinking and at first i thought it was because I needed to animation cancel my skills in order for it to register two consecutive light attacks, but that didn’t help much. And then it dawned on me. How the server registers consecutive light attacks is by the damage that the target takes. If you remember the recent changes to Kena stated “Cannot proc if there is an ability that has no cost in between of light attacks”. Each DoT that ticks on the target is an ability that has no cost, so while you can weave non-dot abilities with LA and proc it, if you have 1+ dots on the target it will screw with your proc chance tremendously. So any build that is using more than 1 DoT will have a really hard time proccing Kena. I even had this happen LA>VB>LA —-> no proc. When I first got this I was confused, but then I took a look at my combat log and it registered:

1. LA

2. Weapon Enchant Proc (an ability with no cost)

3. VB

4. LA

So because of my weapon enchant proc, the Kena buff didn’t go off…

RIP Kena on DoT builds :'(

I did a long test today and had issues with several DoT running on templar...

"Molag Kena: Fixed an issue where the 2-piece Overkill bonus would still proc if you used an ability that did not have a cost in between the two Light Attacks."

by the way FTC shows that the proc is up, but unless you actually glow blue it isnt actually up....its an FTC bug...

On console, so don't have TG yet. Awaiting more test results as I play a Magicka DK and am curious to know everyone's findings. Also curious to know what will provide the highest DPS should Kena no longer be the go-to helm...Skoria or Narieneth?

Seconded. My magblade uses 2 DoT's would like to know too. For mag DK's it would be Skoria no? Nerienth doesn't proc off DoT's.

Seconded. My magblade uses 2 DoT's would like to know too. For mag DK's it would be Skoria no? Nerienth doesn't proc off DoT's.

Generally speaking, Narieneth puts out more DPS, so it is probably preferred over Skoria, especially now that magic dmg is under Elemental in the CP tree.

In regards to Mag DK, yes it is a DoT build, but if I am not mistaken, Skoria can only proc from a single DoT; i.e. having multiple dots running at the same time doesn't increase the chance of proc. Either way, even if it proc'd immediately after cooldown, not sure it would out perform Narieneth. And although most of the skills are DoTs, assuming I am not mistaken, the first tick of any DoT skill can proc Narieneth. Between first tics and whip weave, it should keep Narieneth proc'ing quickly after cooldown.

Just curious what the best DPS option is as we on console can only do theoretical tests.

I've been testing Skoria vs kena for my mag dk and I'm starting to lean towards Skoria. Still tinkering with Cp distribution but Skoria has been proccing a ton for me. I would definitely take Skoria over Nerenith for my dk for sure.

For kena vs Skoria or Skoria vs Nerenith? For kena vs Skoria I've been getting 1-2k more dps with Skoria. Averaging 28k-32k, but like I said before I'm still tinkering with the best distribution for Cp. I'm kinda happy that Skoria is working out again for me because I'm tired of sharing the kena set between my other magic builds lol.

My magblade runs Nerein'eth.

My magknight runs Skoria, now that they fixed the proc and meteors are finally dropping at a respectable rate.

The numbers between them are comparable, about 1-2K DPS gain--there's too much RNG to be definitive--but if you run a DoT-heavy build that can easily proc Skoria (e.g., mag DK), then I think Skoria is better for the simple fact that they always hit the target. Those lich crystals are fine in static fights where everything is held in place, but in mobile fights, that 3-second delay makes them almost useless.

Interesting. From a magblade perspective at least and on console too, I'm much preferring Nerienth over Kena lately. I don't need to manage my resources as carefully and LA- Swallow Soul-LA perfectly to keep it procced with Kena. It also proccs a ton in AOE situations especially.

There's probably situations where Kena would perform better but I'm thinking Nerienth is better overall.

3 piece Moondancer (shoulder helm and weapon) and 4 piece moon dancer on back bar (dual wield) is something you should look into for a DK. For Mag Blade it's Nerieneth and vMA staff and 2 Torug's on the back bar ftw:))
