    Morrowind
I read about Morrowind in a forum and thought: "That sounds nice. I'll give it a try."

So I bought it, put the disk in the drive, the installation started... and I was immediately hooked. The theme melody of this game is so amazing, I was completely overwhelmed - and I am addicted to TES since. I think my husband still curses the day I read about this game! ;)

Morrowind was my first computer RPG ever and I loved it from the start. I remember my first walk from Seyda Neen to Balmora - it was night, I couldn't find the silt strider (I didn't know yet that those wonderful sounds were coming from those amazing animals) and wandered around in the swamp, heard a man falling from the sky, was several times nearly killed by kwama foragers, cliff racers, mudcrabs... I was nearly dead when I stumbled into Balmora at dawn - and it was just great, I loved it! For me Morrowind is still the queen of computer RPGs.

I also played Oblivion and of course Skyrim. The main reason I decided to play ESO... well... I love the Bosmer. I just love them, I can't help it. They are a wonderful, complex and very interesting people - I loved them from the start and I can't imagine playing another race in these games. Well, so Valenwood is the main reason I bought ESO. I really wanted to go to Valenwood and see the home of the wood elves. I always had my own ideas about this country and ESO does not really meet my expectations in this regard, but it is a good start. :)

I came to it in a strange way - I needed a birthday present quick for a female friend, went into a game store in 2004 and looked for an "unusual" gift and saw Morrowind on the shelf - not really knowing what it is, but it was game of the year, so I thought I will most likely not do a lot wrong with it and it came with 2 expansions and was pretty cheap (I was just 16 at that time, so cheap was an argument for me, while it did not look cheap). It turned out that my friend did not really like video games, so she asked me, if I would want it back. This is how I came to Morrowind, now I had a copy and started playing and was quickly pulled into the story and the atmosphere of the game, enhanced it with Quarl's textures and so my journey into the world of Nirn started and I got hooked quickly.

So funny, you went west from Seyda Neen, just like I did, and so we both missed the slit stryder, because it is north of Seyda Neen, just a little bit to the north. And most likely you went to the coast and then up the coast and through that valley which leads to Balmora later. I made just the same mistake on my first journey to Balmora and those damned cliff racers nearly got me. Near Balmora I explored a cave I came across, full of Kwama, I guess that is what you stumbled into as well.

    Oblivion
    I'm an Elder Scrolls addict.
    - 1100+ hours into Oblivion
    - 800+ hours into Skyrim
    - 400+ hours into Morrowind (played this on Xbox 360 until an update came out that disenabled it)
    - Around 100 hours into Daggerfall... Stopped working :-(
    - Barely tried Arena at all
    - Did not try the other games

The only reason I ever cared for TESO was because it was an Elder Scrolls game. Morrowind and Oblivion are my favorite TES games, but ESO definitely beats out Skyrim imo. Recent DLC has seen a return to its roots... so please ZOS follow up and just GIVE US SPELLCRAFTING!!!

Daggerfall, but I didn't really get into it. It came out just as I was really getting into competitive Quake deathmatch & CTF. I played it a bit but Quake dominated my game playing time. Likewise when Morrowind came out.. I was still too entrenched in Quake clans & competitions to play it much.

Oblivion was the first Elder Scrolls game that hooked me in. I played it in 1280x720 on a 3 meter projection screen in a very dark room... so immersive, it was awesome. I totally loved the sneaking & stealthed attacks... a nightblade was born :D

Skyrim was huge also... pumped many hours of game time into that & it was very satisfying.

Would not make me wonder, if Lucien Lachance was the one, who brought you to becoming a nightblade. I will never forget when I first met him, after I accidently killed someone innocent, went to bed and Lucien Lachance showed up and made me an offer. Lucien is one of the most memorable characters in Oblivion IMO. I got hooked to the dark brotherhood and am looking forward to how ZOS will be implementing this. In Morrowind it was the Morag Tong which got me hooked.

Oblivion was the first game I played and owned, but I dabbled a little bit with Morrowind thanks to the generosity and persuasiveness of a friend. I still haven't played MW from start to finish, which I deeply regret.

I miss spellcrafting and the relative expansiveness of alchemy in Oblivion though.

Oh yes, I just loved alchemy in Oblivion, alchemy master basically made you god like - being a vampire in full sun burn, no problem, just pop a potion and all is fine. Being born under the Atronach, no problem, pop a potion and magicka is full again. And the beauty of a bow enchanted with strength absorption and burden poison on it - converting all enemies into stationary practice targets. I just loved Alchemy in Oblivion.

    Redguard
first game was tesa: redguard actually and truth be told, while I loved the story, it was god awful trying to play. Like superman 64 levels of frustrating control wise. I may have spent more time reloading after missed jumps than actual playing. The writing, however, along with few owned alternatives, saw me complete the damned thing. Sadly I don't own any of the associated material that came with it, oh to have that now.

A while later my friend got Morrowind for xbox and I watched him play it for a while, completely entranced by it (And unaware it had anything to do with Redguard). Eventually he got the PC version and I would play the Xbox version when I went over to his house. I fell madly in love with the game, staying up all night playing it many times. The story, the environment, even the limitation induced fog conjured feelings I've since had only two videogames give me, Shadow of the colossus and Oblivion. The freedom to run off and steal the sword of white woe or to clear a sixth house stronghold to use as a base, the detail in every corner of the world, the expert world building in the books, the oh *** feeling of getting corprus for the first time and thinking I had messed up, when dreamers started appearing randomly in town, even getting my rest interrupted by a scrib, I loved it all.

I used to go on the fledgling UESP and stare at bad scans of Kirkbrides concept art for large swaths of time. It shaped my art style growing up, you can still see it in my ****.

The alien howling sounds and music while running around the bitter coast with its glowing blue mushrooms and draggle tails still gives me all the feels. The dunmer voice still sends shivers of excitement down my spine.

Oblivion and subsequent replayings of MW bred the lore love in me and I've been a lifer ever since.

I long for the day that Bethesda (or even Zenimax) pushes the stranger in a strange land feel of Morrowind. Bring back the alien cultures guys! Keep trashing the tired elf tropes!

i re-bought it as well on steam, this version runs fine, but you might have to readjust your video settings from time to time. It somehow forgets about it sometimes and does not recognize modern graphic-cards, so it sets the graphics to medium. You will have to adjust that from time to time when the launcher is forgetting about your settings.

    Morrowind
I am impressed, that the majority on this forum plays TES since Morrowind or even earlier. I would have expected that this is the minority and most would have started with Skyrim, given its popularity. But Oblivion got an even higher vote. I would have expected as well to see a higher vote for those who just know ESO, because those are IMO those who complain the most on the forum. But as it seems they are a tiny minority and just very noisy in this forum.

I am now even more feeling at home here, among all my fellow long-term TES fans.

Mine was actually Daggerfall ( but I didn't know it was an ES series game, I didn't really play it as in depth as I did Oblivion and Oblivion remains one if not my all time favourate game).

So I picked Oblvion for the thread since it got me into Morrowind & Skyrim as well as this.

I remember watching the trailers/features bts footage on a magazine disc and how they were going to make all the NPCs have daily routines, have to eat ect. The original imagining of it was insane, the technology was a bit lacking I think. But the medieval fantasy feel and the atmosphere was just so wonderful. I still have Oblivion's sound track on my phone.

It does not even feel medieval IMO, it is a much more modern and much cleaner variant of it. In some way it feels even modern, like there is gender equality to the most part, there are basically no illiterates and the amount of poor people is minor. It has to the most part a multi-cultural and multi-racial society, and with the exception of Windhelm (what is Skyrim), there are no ghettos for certain races. It has a modern feel to it, while still having a modernized medieval theme.

Oblivion was the first for me. But I had tried to get Arena when it came out. It looked interesting but my ex husband refused to let me get the game. It would have taken the time from him being able to play the computer. Besides, he said it was my job to raise the kids and women didn't play games, despite the fact that we met playing AD&D.

Then, years later, my youngest son asked me to come watch him play Oblivion. As soon as I heard Sir Patrick Stewart, I was hooked.

I think creepy is not the right term, it was a truely foreign world in Morrowind. Starting with the 2 moons in the sky, the presence of magic everywhere and performed by anyone to a certain degree. These giant mushrooms and the floating Netch. And then again it felt familiar as well, more like in a dream than that it would have been creepy - at least to me it was like that.

Edit: what I liked a lot with Morrowind was that your choices had consequences. You had to be careful which of the offered quests you are actually doing and which to reject - otherwise you could have messed up another quest line for another guild or faction really bad. You had to think in Morrowind.

In a way this concept of consequences has returned in fallout 4 - there it matters as well, what you are doing and for whom. It will change the way factions are relating to you and how the game play will evolve. That was a good step back/forwards by Bethesda in the fallout series.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I just did the main quest in Oblivion once, I just was not fond of the redish sky once the main quest is really ongoing and the oblivion gates open all over the place. The game converted into something I did not like that much, even I have finished it once, I never again started the main quests to this point ever again.

similar in Skyrim - but there you have at least not an awful sky to look at all the time and I really liked the random dragon encounters which were quite often, because I am not a fast travel user. So I basically had tons of money in the game, due the many bones and scales from those dragons. They are nearly gone (why not totally?) after finishing the main quest line.
