"Convenience" items

LindsC

So, I keep seeing these posts asking for "convenience items" such as gold in crown store, auto level to v16, certain mats in the crown store, lore book completion in the crown store. Etc. Why do people want items like this?

Personally, I am against this. Why are you for or against it?

I'm against most of the suggested convenience items. Some things just need to be earned. However, if they are going to keep selling motifs then they need to sell the trait material as well (like they do with the Glass motif (malachite)).

Normally, I'm against any game functionality that can be achieved by using a credit card. So yeah, I'm against riding lessons, for example.

But Zeni has already opened the door. And even thought they haven't said it, we know what's coming, right?

If Zeni is perfectly willing to sell glass motifs (cosmetic, remember ... right) and riding lessons (cosmetic?) and the experience scrolls, it will only be a matter of time before they sell .... wait for it ....

Champion points. Packs of 10. 1000 crowns.

I hate it ... but I think it's going to happen.

What is the point of paying for a game, and not playing it? Earning your skills is part of that progression, handing off that progression for a quick buck devalues and disrespects the time we all put in to earn our skills/level/title/gold, whatever it was.

"Convenience" is problematic because it's been defined as things that save people time. Sounds harmless, but it can easily be extended to anything and everything that can be achieved or obtained, reached etc. in the game if you spend enough time. So in that sense what isn't convenience? CP/XP, rare crafting materials, dropped set items, motifs can all be passed off as convience.

Please stop making requests for game features. ZOS have enough bad ideas as it is!

Part of me wants to scream, "NO WAY, EARN IT LIKE I DID". And while I really don't understand why anyone would want to skip straight to the end without experiencing the game, I guess if there are players that want this, give it to them. As long as they pay a steep price for it. Even if a fully maxed v16 was offered, it's not really P2W. I would welcome someone new to the game who bought a v16 into Cyrodiil.....easy kill cuz having a high level character is not the same as knowing how to use the skills that come with it. Just make the 'for sale' v16 in a special unchangeable outfit so we can seek them out in PvP and avoid them in Group PvE B) . They can support the game financially, and provide a new sport for us. >:)

If someone wants to drop an absurdly large amount of price-fixed fiat currency Crowns to auto-get a V16 wouldn't really care to be honest. Obviously change that to "insta-level 50" once the vet ranks are removed in Q2 (Q2? I think?). Being at max level is sort of an inevitability that even toddlers could manage with a little direction. Pay To Win stuff would be something more along the lines of insta-champion points (as they take significantly longer to grind for), top-level gear (as they take significantly more skill to obtain, requiring competency in either PvP or PvE plus lots of time investment), and similar things. I wouldn't want gold in the Crown Store, though, nor most crafting mats (motif is fine, maybe even style material, but not tempers, Rubedite, alchemy ingredients, etc). Putting those in would much more easily break the in-game economy, which is something a lot of people care about. Other pay to win things would be stuff like Orbital Cow Laser, an ancient Ayleid device only available in the crown store that insta-wipes an enemy raid.

And let's be honest, an insta-leveled character would be soooooo expensive. You have to figure that they'd calculate how much it would take in XP scrolls and the fastest known grind spots to reach max level, then add the additional convenience of not having to actually grind it up. That sounds like a boatload of money to me, if someone wants to shell it out then be my guest.

The current model (current items/goods) as it is is fine. Adding "insta-level", "lorebook completion", "Crowns to Gold" items are definitely p2w and would definitely be a huge decline for the game.

Anything that is not obtainable in-game, but can be purchased from the store is p2w.

Cash Shops are fine, as long as items like this are not implemented. Fancy mount or flashy costume? Great! Instant v16, 300cp or 1 Million Gold, hell no!

I don't think it's pay-to-win exactly since you can't get anything in the crown store you can't get in game and many of the things they're selling won't actually help you win anything.

But it does seem like paying to avoid playing the game. Buy scrolls so you need less XP to level up, buy bag and bank upgrades so you don't need to earn gold to get them, buy motifs instead of finding them, and now you can buy werewolf and vampire unlocks instead of getting bitten and doing the quests...

It seems strange to me that anyone would buy a game and then pay more to not play it. You can not play a game for free.

I bought the Glass Motif simply because after 3 or 4 months I had just 5 Motif Fragments and was never going to get the Motif any other way. Every TES game I have played my characters were in Glass. This weekend I put in the final bag space amounts on my Mules and Master Crafter who has to carry more items, but I was going from 170 to 200 slots total, I had already put the work in in the game to get to 170 slots on all characters, so I felt no guilt for buying the last 3. Besides, I have crowns from ESO Plus I need to spend. I did buy some crowns at the 50% off sale and with the 50% off sale on bag slots, they were really 25% of original price. My thoughts were along the lines of getting Akiviri Motif and that was the reason for the crown purchases. I have yet to get that motif.

Other than that, I tend to buy pets and that is pretty much it. I don't get any of the new mounts, I don't like the Guar or the Bear mounts (too wide and I don't like how the character sits on them)

When I start a new character, I will get to 30 in Speed from the Crown store because a horse is painful to use below that. But, all other upgrades will come from spending gold over time.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

This has been dealt with in various other threads. The reason that motifs are something other than purely cosmetic is that they allow you to change the appearance of other people's armour, not just your own. At that point they become a resource that is linked to crafting and the crafting economy.

I was against this at the time they announced it and I'm still against it. At the time, motifs were selling for around 700 gold each. Now what do they sell for? Next to nothing. And specialty motifs?

I think the reason for breaking up the glass and dwemer motifs into parts that are now impossible to find is so they would sell better in the crown store.

    This poll is biased.

MMO industry is a heavy money-reliant one.

If you think convenience items are P2W, my only thought is this is your first MMO.

Instead of simply giving negative feedback, why don't you give us an example of how should ZOS make money?

If you ran a MMO, and had to earn money to keep it alive and growing, what would you sell?

You mean the suggests that people have been making since the B2P announcement? Here's one; make subbing an option that is enticing rather than pointless (and I say that as someone who has an unbroken sub since PC early access), and then top up using cosmetic shinies and DLCs bought from the crown store.

Contriving changes in mechanics to artificially increase the difficulty of obtaining items just to drive crown store sales? A cheap trick that should be, but unfortunately isn't, unworthy of ZOS and this MMORPG. Yes, motifs, I am looking at you.

I did make gold that way. I had repeat customers who would come to me to gear up not only their main characters, but sometimes 3-4 alts as well. Over a period of months. I was a 9 trait crafter who had every motif other than imperial and would go the extra mile to provide my goods cheaply (and with considerable convenience) to my customers. Motifs came in? I've had 2 orders since. Yeah.... this change didn't hurt players at all. *sigh*
