Why do people want text chat so badly? I can understand if you don't have a headset or whatever. But who willingly wants to take the time to type out a damn message on their controller. Just give us Zone wide game chat.

question are you actually on console?
the problem of voice chat being the only way to communicate in game:
1. area chat has to be in a small area's which makes finding people to play/communicate with harder. text can be in a larger area which leads to finding help faster
2. having to many people in the same chat makes the chat useless because there is so mutch noise that you can't hear anything. this counts for area chat in city (where there are also trolls who scream and put music on blasters for no other reason then to annoy others) as in guild chat in the larger guild which leads to less people being in guild chat. when there is guildchat is often empty as result of this people will have less incentive to check the guild chats to see if people are actually there so it will go down a downward spiral fast. doesn't have to but i have seen it happen, even ZoS knows this and made them divide the guildchat up to 4 rooms, but i haven't seen a single guild using more then one room with max 3-4 people using it.
3. people not having a headset or having anxiety issues won't be able to have any communicate, also people with family's like little children have staten this is the reason they wont use the voice chat.
4. people not having their chat on. main reason of this is because the spamming in city's but this makes meeting new people in the game harder then it should be. ZoS wanted to make a MMO, make sure that playing with others is a rewarding experience.
5. chatting with a stranger online feels more natural to me then actually speaking
6. easyer for people who aren't native english to make clear what they mean. (no accent for example)

Yes i am on consul. Treat the Zone chat like guild chat. multiple channels, or they could also label them Zone Chat. Zone LFG Chat, Zone Auction Chat.
Its quite simple. I play just fine with little kids of my own. If and when i do play while they're awake i do Solo stuff. I don't have an answer for you about the people with Anxiety issues. which is really the only that makes sense. if youre not native to english and theres text chat what good is that? now ZoS has to also implement a translation system?
Spamming chat in the city will be easier with text chat. now you'll have people selling gold for real money like crazy and text based spam. Mute the people who spam voice chat. its not difficult.

I wanted to point out you won't have people selling gold for cash due to servers to being link to pc where bots can be easily made and able to spam people through pms

well, we haven't had goldseller spam on pc for a loooong time. that concern is irrelevant.

Looking for an 8 trait crafter not sure how else to find one on console.

Even to be able configure my own Quickchat messages would be a start in the right direction. Things like...
"Looking for 8 trait crafter"
"Healer looking for group for dungeon x"
"Looking for Devine light armour shoulders"
"Come to Daddy"
Etc

I am completely baffled at ESO having no text chat for console users. Coming here from FFXIV on console to try something new, I never in a million years would've thought this feature would be missing. I've played MMORPGs for 12+ years, and text chat functionality is a MUST. None of the "reasons" from ESO devs make sense, especially when I just came from playing FFXIV on my PS4. I used a cheap USB keyboard along with my controller.
This is my first week playing ESO, though as I mentioned, I'm not new to MMORPGs. I don't know how long I'm going to be able to stick with ESO after finding this out - quite frankly, I feel gimped as a console player without text chat. Sure I have voice chat options, but I hate them - and apparently so does most people, since area voice chat MAYBE has 2-3 people in it at any given time. I'd like at least the option to use text chat since it's already a feature in the PC version, and proven to work in other console MMOs just fine. (And as the screenshots above show, too.)
I like the feel of the game overall, except the feeling of isolation without text chat. I run into other people all over the place, but don't feel like I have a viable way to communicate. Quick chat is limited, there are 38585930847374859 reasons why voice chat isn't viable, and I feel disconnected without the ability to connect with others in the zone. I enjoyed random conversations in zone chat from other games - answering questions, making new friends, finding people to group up or offer advice... it's what builds community in a game. It sucks when a specific population of players are isolated from that experience.
If playing on a PC was an option, I'd do it. But frankly I shouldn't have to play the game on one system over another due to a lack of a crucial piece of MMORPG functionality.
sigh.

Almost word for word my experience too. Played MMO's since Ultima Online in the late 90's. First console MMO I tried was FF14 on PS4 and functionally it was very good just didn't like the lore. Then I came to ESO on PS4. At first I genuinely thought I had missed some option check on the UI to turn the text chat interface on, but sadly it's just not there.
