Lol, then he shouldnt play MMOs. ESO is very newcomer friendly in my opinion.

I am one of the "freekend" people, though I was part of an old beta stress test and wished to try the game out again as I've seen it on sale on Black Friday weekend and now through ZOS Store for the weekend and was on the fence about getting ESO earlier. As for my initial impressions yesterday were of a solid MMO, though today sadly this is changing as I am playing an noticing Ebonheart Pact starting zone (Stonefalls) chat is filled with hate/lash towards all the Free Weekend players which is not making me as a 'new player' feel welcomed to the ESO community and that I am just another nuisance instead of a prospective player. One thing I am noticing through playing MMO's is that a Guild is usually the best way to play so I am hoping to find one that is welcoming to new player's with an RP oriented sense.

Just my 2 cents right now, hopefully the community aspect changes as I am somewhat still leaning towards getting the game.

Sorry to hear that man. You're going to find trash talkers in any MMO, but thankfully ESO seems to have the least from what I've seen. Met a lot of great people here and some nice guilds. Hope you have a better time from now on.

Ech, I don't find that to be the case among the in-game community at all. Lotta trolls and jerks and immature people imo. And there is no control of it by Zenimax. Though they are very harsh on forum posts that aren't even 1/4 as bad as in-game chat.
Disabling the grass may improve performance.

I invited some friends to play, so I hope they stick. All friends (and family) I played with since early access left after 3-4 months of playing. Mainly because (and I agree) the PvE is boring as *** after 1 or 2 playthroughs. And they didn't like PvP (which I think is awesome)

There is a lot of Pact bashing in here. It just takes more grit to be Ebonheart. I have played since Arena and yeah Skyrim and Nords are my favorite. Red to the bone and proud of it. Milk drinkers need not apply.

They bash the pact because they fear them.

Im curious what did your friend expect? Instantly to be max level and max champ points? The whole fun of the game is the journey. God forbid you start a new character and help him along. Instead you basically encourage him to quit the game. Good job.

Depends on the type of player. If he is PvE, I don't see any issues with the CP system and the journey is more important.
If he was planning to play PvP, since the game is advertised as a huge battle AvAvA game, I can understand his worries. even with the catchup system he will be eaten alive in PvP.

I do understand people who play longer and more want to be more powerfull then those who play less or just started. But image a new player V16 finally comes to cyrodill and cannot beat anyone because he has 100 CP and the rest has 3600 (in a few years). Even with the catch up system a casual player has to play years to catch up. This will discourage every new PvP players.

Solution.... no CP campaign or limit CP campaign.

How on earth could you make to VR16 and not have more than 100 cp? That simply is impossible. Also we are talking about now not a few years from now. Id be shocked the game even made it that long considering.

I was dramatizing it. I think we don't even have veteran ranks then anymore. Even a difference between a 500 cp'er and 1500 cp'er can be big.

We will see what happens. Since there is no other good AvAvA game i'll stick to this game until Cyrodill is exploding. But every friend/colleague/family member I introduced to this game does not stick to it. Some even where a bit angry because I told them to buy the game.

If I ask them what they did not like, they said: BOOORING

They where not expecting to play PvP, but PvE. But why is a shooter more up their alley if they think this PvE is boring? I don't see this. I also think it is boring and I find other mmo's PvE more exiting to play. Should I also play shooters now?

In my experience (on PC NA server) Ebonheart zone chat in general is way worse than in the other 2 alliances, and Stonefalls is by far the worst zone for it. I don't know why, but it seems to attract all of the trolls. If you're PC NA and considering staying on after the freekend, send me a message with your user name and I'd be happy to send you an invite to a guild I'm in that's friendly to newcomers (although the invite won't be sent until I'm home from work).

Yeah, this. Ebonheart seems to harbor the most abusive types, followed by Daggerfall, then Aldmeri. At least in my personal observations since day one...YMMV! I actually deactivated zone chat a few months ago because I got tired of teenage and adult babies having abusive posturing contests in the chat and tossing slurs at everyone (both real-world and Tamrielic slurs). Most of the fun stuff (silly/serious/bad roleplay, for example) happens in /say, anyway. :D

Oh I am glad I use player voice chat (Teampeak) only with people that I know at least a bit from the game :), with my guildies. For text chat there is a very good function, "ignore", you never see anything from those persons again :).

@nordsavage I wasn't trying to bash the Pact or start anything like that, I was only noting that some zone player's while on a Pact character were not being too 'friendly' to newcomers/weekenders which had me concerned if I were to buy the game on how newcomers for all factions are treated.

So far I've gotten responses from people of all factions on RP, Guilds, etc. which has broken that initial newcomer fear.

One thing I am wondering: Is there a way to enable subtitles on chat? I know it sounds stupid but subtitles are nice to have when trying to understand all of the VO's by NPCs. Or is this available via Chat Bubbles (BETA)?

I heard a group of vet players 'trading' with new players, giving them false info and taking their gold. And also heard people offering to 'upgrade' new players gear and weapons and then they laughed and wouldn't return them after the trade.

But, I guess there's nothing I can do about it.

I haven't had this happen to me yet, though I have been somewhat keeping to myself til I can hit lvl 10 or so for PvP, etc. If you have it happen to you I'd report them or send in a ticket with a screenshot as ZoS could help with the items hopefully.

    @vek892_ESO

Yes. If you want to cover up all the zone chat about sterilizing dumb people at birth and voting for Trump, just click the chat window gear, click options, then make sure NPC is checked. It won't give you all of the text - banter you overhear from mobs and random cityfolk won't register. But NPC quest interactions and dolmen speech will show.

Not quite. The issue in reference here is that overload lag that got fixed and the thread is asking opinions of the game from their perspective beyond that. Had I not worded it the way I did this thread would be filled with complaints about Coldharbour and Stonefalls lol

What about it is it you don't believe? Friend doesn't want to play alone, I tell him he won't be able to contribute before hundreds of hours of playtime/grinding, interest lost. Now we're waiting for Black Desert Online so we can play together without one of us at any time having such a huge boost to our stats.

You could always level a new character with your buddy. Would probably speed it up quite a bit. I have a few friends that want to come back and that's exactly what I'm doing so we can enjoy the endgame together.

So your friend expects to get to a high level in the game overnight? have they played an mmorpg before?

I don't think anyone expects to get to level cap over night or even the weekend But this game has the worse leveling curve of any recent AAA MMO.

Heck you can level faster in Blade and Soul and Black Desert than this game.

And every time a spot is found to increase leveling speed Zenimax nerfs the heck out it.

Example Skeevers in Sewers pre nerf 500 XP each currently 25 XP each for the same mob.

Its ridiculous the nerfs they do to the level grind. I

    Any advice for RP'ers?

    @UrQuan
I also made 3 characters, one of each faction so I am trying out my Brenton mage now. Wish I would of done Coldharbour though (no staves/gear from that area) instead of skipping the tutorial.
Yeah, I've got a multitude of characters (across all factions), and the couple of times I skipped the tutorial I regretted it. I'm sure not everyone feels the same way, but I like running around in the Wailing Prison collecting the gear I can find there, and then coming out of it with some actual equipment.

My most important advice to you: if you haven't already figured this out (I know I didn't figure it out when I first started, but you were part of a beta stress test, so you might have known this already), the quest giver just outside of the house that you wake up in after the tutorial gives you a quest that sends you on a boat to an island. DO THIS QUEST FIRST! Or as early as possible, if you've already started doing other stuff.

That quest sends you to the actual starter zones. The zone that you wake up in is the first full zone of the game, but it's not the zone that is intended to teach you gameplay and really introduce you to the game. The starter zones are intended for brand new characters, they give you some decent XP, some decent gear, some skyshards, some interesting characters and quests, and are just generally the best place to start playing the game.

Followed your advice on the sidequests and am at ~lvl8.5 so far and a roaming just outside the city looking for anchors (random encounters? or there a good spot to at least see one on free weekend?), new quests, etc.

Kind of annoyed the main quest leaves me hanging with no new objectives (it was just getting interesting!)... Did the Mage's Guild quest up to the waiting point as well. Eh guess I will just wander around and be a wandering wizard til main/mage quests show up.
Yeah, I found the main quest and the guild quests (if you haven't yet joined the fighters guild and started the first fighters guild quest, you should do that too - when I first started playing I thought I had to pick one or the other, and didn't realize you could join both the fighters guild and the mages guild) a little odd in how they progress when I first started. Basically the main quest gives you a new quest every 5 levels. So the first time you get to a major city after hitting level 10 you'll have the prophet appear and ask you to come to the Harborage for the next quest.

It's similar with the guild quests. You get a new mages guild quest each time you rank up in the mages guild skill line, as long as you go past a mages guildhall. It's the same with the fighters guild.

You can wait as long as you want to do the main quest and the guild quests, as the quests (which are forced solo instances) scale to your level - including having the enemies and loot scale to your level. If you wanted to, you could wait until you're level 50 (which is actually Vet Rank 1) before doing the quest from the main quest line that you got at level 10.

Not me, but a friend of mine downloaded the game and played for a little while, then the question of how long it will take him to catch up to me came up, and I told him about the Champion System. That pretty much killed it for him.
Champion System isn't that bad though, especially with the catch up mechanics. I've pretty much hit the level cap on CP, and I've been playing less of late. It's not as brutal as other games.

    Any advice for RP'ers?

    @UrQuan

Joined the fighters guild as well, I've heard you can only join ~6 guilds max. Are there more than 6 guilds present in the game (just so I know if I should hold off of guild joining like crazy)?

I also got to the main PvP area and WOW is it intense. Only downside so far is no mount = lots of running and dying from splinter groups.
