Not me, but a friend of mine downloaded the game and played for a little while, then the question of how long it will take him to catch up to me came up, and I told him about the Champion System. That pretty much killed it for him.

Champion System isn't that bad though, especially with the catch up mechanics. I've pretty much hit the level cap on CP, and I've been playing less of late. It's not as brutal as other games.

I am one of the "freekend" people, though I was part of an old beta stress test and wished to try the game out again as I've seen it on sale on Black Friday weekend and now through ZOS Store for the weekend and was on the fence about getting ESO earlier. As for my initial impressions yesterday were of a solid MMO, though today sadly this is changing as I am playing an noticing Ebonheart Pact starting zone (Stonefalls) chat is filled with hate/lash towards all the Free Weekend players which is not making me as a 'new player' feel welcomed to the ESO community and that I am just another nuisance instead of a prospective player. One thing I am noticing through playing MMO's is that a Guild is usually the best way to play so I am hoping to find one that is welcoming to new player's with an RP oriented sense.

Just my 2 cents right now, hopefully the community aspect changes as I am somewhat still leaning towards getting the game.

Sorry to hear that man. You're going to find trash talkers in any MMO, but thankfully ESO seems to have the least from what I've seen. Met a lot of great people here and some nice guilds. Hope you have a better time from now on.

Ebonheart? Mo' like Toxicheart! I can't really say the other factions are any better though to be honest, but I can say not everyone in the game is that way. In my experience (on PC NA server) Ebonheart zone chat in general is way worse than in the other 2 alliances, and Stonefalls is by far the worst zone for it. I don't know why, but it seems to attract all of the trolls. 'Cause Skyrim and Nords are in that area. So all the people who have generally only played Skyrim choose the Pact. Those people are probably younger and in general more immature so you get a slightly higher concentration in EP than in the other zones.

    That's my (admittedly unfounded) theory.

What about it is it you don't believe? Friend doesn't want to play alone, I tell him he won't be able to contribute before hundreds of hours of playtime/grinding, interest lost. Now we're waiting for Black Desert Online so we can play together without one of us at any time having such a huge boost to our stats.

Welcome to the ESO community! Try not to be discouraged by that sort of negativity. I've been playing the game since the console launch and, for the most part, I have found the community to be a great boon towards enjoying the game. This is really my first MMO, and I can tell you that the guilds I've joined and the majority of players I've run into are all pretty much good people who are usually willing to help. I would suggest going to the guild recruitment page on the forum to find a guild. That's where I found the two I run with. Most of them are pretty laid back and don't ask much so it's a really cool way to help learn the ins and outs of this great game. Have fun and again welcome to Tamriel!!!

So your friend expects to get to a high level in the game overnight? have they played an mmorpg before?

not to say it's good or bad...but there are MMO's out there that are realizing that one of the keys to bringing in new players is to give them a way to rapidly catch up to their friends. And By rapidly, I mean that they don't have to play 8 hours a day 7 days a week for a few weeks to get caught up.

And yes, I've heard of all the Ego boosted "I can get to VR X in a few days" comments. New players simply won't do that. they will suffer along at a slow pace, get to lvl 30 or so after a week, realize that they still have 20 more normal levels to go, and 16 more levels of VR before they are "caught up" to their buddies that are playing at VR 16, and they will decide to play a different game with their friends.

It's just the way it is. Most people nowadays don't have the time to "catch up" like they used to, and as games age, the discrepancy between a lvl 1 and a level "capped" gets bigger. WoW is a great example...they have squeezed the leveling process multiple times, and even gone through a complete stat overhaul (to bring numbers down), and the amount of levels you have to cover is still insane.

The discrepancy is one of the reasons they started scaling in this game. Hopefully they will continue down that thread.

Want a good example? SWtOR just came out with an amazing Story based expansion, got great reception. Part of the positive reviews was that you could start at level cap (pretty much) if you wanted, to join in on the story with your friends. OR, you could start a new character, and they severely reduced the leveling process. You can pretty much just do the main storyline, and get to level cap with that alone. or do side quests if you like.

I'm not saying that all MMO's need to offer a "free level cap" character. There are still many aspects of this game that reward higher CP levels (duh), as well as higher VR levels. But they are also shooting themselves in the foot with the long leveling time, and the antiquated necessity of doing pretty much every quest in every zone, and more besides, just to get to cap. Orsinium was a good step. that needs to continue with all the content (though I honestly think they need to scale DOWN, rather then UP for the old areas. This would make playing in those areas as a high level much easier...they you COULD play with your friends, and not have to worry.)

Vek892 - Don't worry.the amount of players that spew vitrol in chat are small compared to the amount of players that enjoy other players. get into a few good guilds and you'll see. It's a great game, story is fun and engaging from 1-50. and they are still in the process of revamping the "Caldwell's" silver and gold, so I'm looking forward to how they approach that. If orsinium is any indication, it will only make the game better.

Yeah, I've got a multitude of characters (across all factions), and the couple of times I skipped the tutorial I regretted it. I'm sure not everyone feels the same way, but I like running around in the Wailing Prison collecting the gear I can find there, and then coming out of it with some actual equipment.

My most important advice to you: if you haven't already figured this out (I know I didn't figure it out when I first started, but you were part of a beta stress test, so you might have known this already), the quest giver just outside of the house that you wake up in after the tutorial gives you a quest that sends you on a boat to an island. DO THIS QUEST FIRST! Or as early as possible, if you've already started doing other stuff.

That quest sends you to the actual starter zones. The zone that you wake up in is the first full zone of the game, but it's not the zone that is intended to teach you gameplay and really introduce you to the game. The starter zones are intended for brand new characters, they give you some decent XP, some decent gear, some skyshards, some interesting characters and quests, and are just generally the best place to start playing the game.

Yeah, this. Ebonheart seems to harbor the most abusive types, followed by Daggerfall, then Aldmeri. At least in my personal observations since day one...YMMV! I actually deactivated zone chat a few months ago because I got tired of teenage and adult babies having abusive posturing contests in the chat and tossing slurs at everyone (both real-world and Tamrielic slurs). Most of the fun stuff (silly/serious/"bad"* roleplay, for example) happens in /say, anyway. :D

*(Just wanna make the distinction that I don't dislike so-called "bad" roleplay...I LOVE it. It takes me back to happier younger days when we did crazy things with our million-and-one self-insert characters. :D )

Followed your advice on the sidequests and am at ~lvl8.5 so far and a roaming just outside the city looking for anchors (random encounters? or there a good spot to at least see one on free weekend?), new quests, etc.

Kind of annoyed the main quest leaves me hanging with no new objectives (it was just getting interesting!)... Did the Mage's Guild quest up to the waiting point as well. Eh guess I will just wander around and be a wandering wizard til main/mage quests show up.

Never understood why they changed it so you start in the main area instead of the starter areas. There was always an option to "tell the captain to leave early" in all 3 alliances so you could still fast track it if you wanted.

Now it just makes less sense. Boarding a ship to go backwards?

    Any advice for RP'ers?

    @UrQuan
I also made 3 characters, one of each faction so I am trying out my Brenton mage now. Wish I would of done Coldharbour though (no staves/gear from that area) instead of skipping the tutorial.

Threw me off for a second as well, originally I thought of not leaving the "main area" as a ship/travel point usually means higher end content or the end of the current zone in my mind until I took the ship over to a starting zone.

I'm with you @danno8 @vek892_ESO I didn't play beta, and my first time through I was like WTF? Granted, that was a long time ago, but friends who jumped on recently I had to tell them to get on that boat first. They were totally lost.

I have no idea who complained about being dumped on noob island to start that made them change it, I wasn't there.

Seems like that would have been a good change to do prior to freekend.

Question is: Can they even post here?

You have to send a request to customer support for an invite to the forums and to chose your forum name otherwise you cannot post.
I doubt any of the new free players did that.
